So what they're doing works and that gives me far greater piece of mind than some stitched together solution like this.

what are you on about? I'm just asking a question and posting a potential solution. Push/pull the .kdbx file from one device to the other via one of these methods using crontab. Use Mega to sync between devices (MegaSync on Linux, folder sync on android) and use the Keepass2Android app to load the synced kdb
