I might be getting my hands on a Sun SPARC workstation (from around 2008 I think) for free. Are the newer SPARC CPUs viable for anything or is it just slow, hot trash? I plan to install loonix on it and use it as a shitposting box. Also SPARC general I guess.

I don't think they made any Ultras into 2008, but if they did it would be probably fine for 90% of tasks you could concoct within reason for such a system.
I'd rather run Solaris 10 or BSD on one. Linux is boring, any shitty PC can do that.

Fuck yeah he is, it's incredible what ridiculous Ultra 25/45s go for online, and even in the event that there's a cheap one they seem to be under constant threat of getting poached by case hipsters who just want to gut the fucking thing and put in a boring gaming shitbox build for upvotes.
For the better part of 2015-2016 I did pretty much everything *nix on a low-end UltraSPARC II rackmount and it was pretty fucking great for all kinds of general-use shell tasks, as well as some remote X stuff like StarOffice. A US III with faster DDR memory should be even better.
