sony pulled out of the personal computer industry a while ago, they also sold their first corporate headquarters and many of their product lines.
They're in dire straits, sony pictures and sony computer entertainment are literally the only divisions making them any money.

It's their own fucking fault, they've dropped the ball so many times I don't even know how they're still open.
In the early 90s they could do no wrong so they kept pushing proprietary formats and losing format wars and sheepishly adopting them when it was too late and other companies had filled the niche they ignored.
They really fucked up when mp3s rolled around and the iPod came out.

Things might be different now, but in my experience there was a time where even SCE wasn't doing too hot. I worked in their first party QA department during the first 4 years or so of the PS3, and toward the end of my time there, there was lot of talk about needing to cut costs, and quite a bit of effort being put into it, such as downsizing crews and reducing hours.

Really the best thing Sony can do is drop the low end, which for the most part they've done. Focus entirely on mid-high and high end. Traditionally sony's best areas, and where their best stuff is still made.

Even if they do become more niche in some areas they have SCE, music and movies left.

It's a pity.
I am posting from a vaio, and its a great laptop, which I have for 5 or so years now.
It has a great ips panel, which is one of the best I have ever seen.
A really great anti-glare coating, which gives it a paper like feeling.
It didn't even cost much at all.
I am kind of wanting an upgrade though, but everything I see is shit.
It's either a mac (which is just too expensive), or in some other form gimped (fucked thunderbolt in xps for example)

When it ran windows 8 it wasn't that bad but for anything else it, you might as well have shit in your hands and clapped.

They're now of on their own, where the subsidiary focuses only on making high quality top end machines. The VAIO Z Canvas is an engineering marvel; but they have not made any cheap craptops, so their strategy is based on making profit now rather than large sales.

to be fair, the laptop industry wasn't doing too hot at that time. Samsung basically pulled out except for vogue laptops, Toshiba was found out that they are fudging the laptop sales numbers, Neo and RedFox lost almost everything and now sells 2 in 1, even HP was in dire straits that time.

I think Sony pulling out that time was wise, since their laptops are so expensive.

posting from my comfy VGN-FW21L that's taken hell of abuse over the years.

Loved my Vaio-FW when I had it. Looked nice, had a great screen and keyboard, was pretty cheap used and it was super easy to take apart when something needed fixing.

Are Vaio laptops still good now that they've split off from Sony?

VAIO got spun off and sold to another company, like what happened to Thinkpads when IBM sold them to Lenovo.

I'm in Japan. They're still around, but nowhere near as common now. Dunno if they sell in the US.
