Whatever happened to SONY VAIO?? Before, it was the shit and the best PC laptop you could buy and nowadays, I never see them anywhere.

I go to coffee shop every morning and all I see are macbooks and occasional HP/Dell laptop. I haven';t seen a VAIO in ages.

It's too fucking bad if they were killed by chinkshit....
>>
sony pulled out of the personal computer industry a while ago, they also sold their first corporate headquarters and many of their product lines.
They're in dire straits, sony pictures and sony computer entertainment are literally the only divisions making them any money.
>>
>>60330592
fuck!

so basically, RIP SONY?
>>
>>60330620
It's their own fucking fault, they've dropped the ball so many times I don't even know how they're still open.
In the early 90s they could do no wrong so they kept pushing proprietary formats and losing format wars and sheepishly adopting them when it was too late and other companies had filled the niche they ignored.
They really fucked up when mp3s rolled around and the iPod came out.
>>
>>60330673
Too many RIAA shills on their board of directors.

Sony made the horrible, horrible mistake of selling it off. Or was it spinning off? I can't remember, probably sold I think, but either way it's not a Sony thing anymore.
>>
>>60330759
Plus the company wasnt particularly united, each division had their own lawyers who waved dicks at each other.

Samsung's strategy of "fuck sony" didn't help either, by severely undercutting them in every area, fuelled by the korea government
>>
>>60331572
Sony needs a "Fuck Samshit" strategy.
>>
>>60331882
Unfortunately Sony don't control about 60% of japan's domestic economy like samsung do.

Things might be different now, but in my experience there was a time where even SCE wasn't doing too hot. I worked in their first party QA department during the first 4 years or so of the PS3, and toward the end of my time there, there was lot of talk about needing to cut costs, and quite a bit of effort being put into it, such as downsizing crews and reducing hours.
>>
>>60331882
Really the best thing Sony can do is drop the low end, which for the most part they've done. Focus entirely on mid-high and high end. Traditionally sony's best areas, and where their best stuff is still made.

Even if they do become more niche in some areas they have SCE, music and movies left.
>>
I remember being a SONY fanboy by proxy just because I was also a Playstation fanboy. Great memories of arguing with other people on video game forums and shilling for SONY non-stop.
>>
>>60331971
sony was great... now it's total shit. even their movies are SJW shit.
>>
>>60330557
VAIO's a company now
>>
>>60330868
Spun it off, wasn't a horrible mistake because non-Mac laptop sales are down YOY
>>
It's a pity.
I am posting from a vaio, and its a great laptop, which I have for 5 or so years now.
It has a great ips panel, which is one of the best I have ever seen.
A really great anti-glare coating, which gives it a paper like feeling.
It didn't even cost much at all.
I am kind of wanting an upgrade though, but everything I see is shit.
It's either a mac (which is just too expensive), or in some other form gimped (fucked thunderbolt in xps for example)
>>
>>60330557
>need a new laptop
>has to be able to fit in my backpack
>something small with a bit of power, maybe a graphics card
>talk to a coworkers about getting a new netbook or something similar
>either all shill apple or some over priced ultrabook/cloud book shite
>one guy mentions the vaio
>seems okay, small, fairly lightweight and even a nvidia graphics chip
>fuck it why not
>buy one on ebay for half the rrp
>comes with wangblows m8
>flatten the hdd and install debian
>almost no fucking drivers for it what so ever
>okay I can still have windows seven then
>the install process is a massive ballache and most of the driver need their propriety vaio care shit to work
>barley functions, doesn't use the graphic chip
>try and reinstall windongs egg and just use it as a machine to just vm into
>refuses to even boot to bios
>It is now an expensive paperweight because I have too much pride to get it serviced by some literal mouth breather at pcworld because I cant be bothered going through all of that shit again.
>went out and rage bought a x230
When it ran windows 8 it wasn't that bad but for anything else it, you might as well have shit in your hands and clapped.
>>
They're now of on their own, where the subsidiary focuses only on making high quality top end machines. The VAIO Z Canvas is an engineering marvel; but they have not made any cheap craptops, so their strategy is based on making profit now rather than large sales.

Sent from my VAIO Pro 11
>>
>>60330557
Only if you bought their Pro or Z series $2000 laptops, their regular laptops are bottom of the tier garbage.
>>
>>60330592
>dire straits
no not really
and their real money maker is finance
>>
>>60330557
I was an absolute consumer whore for these Sony Vaio. Bought one in 2002, 2007, and 2012. For some reason the 2007 was the only one that shit the bed.

VAIOs have always been samshit-tier. Fuck Sony, I'm glad they had to sell off the brand.

>>60334935
This also applied to literally any VAIO that did any upgrade from one Windows OS to another. 7>10, proprietary Intel ME drivers never installed after a clean install. Constantly froze. Shit laptop panels, fugly design. Fuck Sony
>>
>>60334935
Lol
>didn't look for the driver support website and went ahead downgrading new hardware with old software like it's a desktop system
>installed debian and expect everything to work with a kernel older than the laptop
EWW

Sony had some sweet ultra portables, RIP Sony & the P series.

Rest in piss.
>>

I fuckin love my Canvas
>>
I never liked sony, ever.

>Viao laptops
I'll always call them the 'Mac of Windows' where it has the worst of both. Mac's terrible prices without properly optimized user experience. I'd literally call anyone a retard who bought it at full price.

to be fair, the laptop industry wasn't doing too hot at that time. Samsung basically pulled out except for vogue laptops, Toshiba was found out that they are fudging the laptop sales numbers, Neo and RedFox lost almost everything and now sells 2 in 1, even HP was in dire straits that time.

I think Sony pulling out that time was wise, since their laptops are so expensive.
>>
>>60330592
it's called Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) now btw haHAA
>>
>>60334935
the retardation is strong with this one.

posting from my comfy VGN-FW21L that's taken hell of abuse over the years.
>>
Loved my Vaio-FW when I had it. Looked nice, had a great screen and keyboard, was pretty cheap used and it was super easy to take apart when something needed fixing.

Are Vaio laptops still good now that they've split off from Sony?
>>
>>60339924
The Vaio Canvas is impressive but expensive, think another anon said he's got one... git.

Love my Vaio FW too, laptop's with wide enough screen's are few and far between but the FW's tick that box.
>>
>>60337948
Pics or didn't happen
>>
>>60339924
It's good, pretty much all their high end ones is.
>>
VAIO got spun off and sold to another company, like what happened to Thinkpads when IBM sold them to Lenovo.

I'm in Japan. They're still around, but nowhere near as common now. Dunno if they sell in the US.

$1100 for this.

Also, VGA port on an ultra-portable.... in 2017. LMAO
>>
>>60330557
Vaio was fucking garbage. Overpriced and unusable
>>
VAIO lives on in anime girls using laptops with copyright avoiding names.

Vaio still has one of the best logos.

An analog curve that became a digital 0 and 1.

Too expensive for what it does btw, at gayapple tier.

>Designed with any work environment in mind, the VAIO S is uniquely equipped with an HDMI port, a VGA connector and LAN connection. Standout features for such a slim machine and ideal for when your work space becomes unpredictable.
>HDMI, VGA and Ethernet in a small laptop are luxury now
>>
>>60344834
you're an idiot. no one need VGA in 2017.
>>
>>60339924
Posting from one.
Bought it as broken beyond repair. HA!

That's not how that works.
