Opinions, /g/?

Is it truly the ultrabook to end all ultrabooks or is it merely a meme machine?
>>
>>60329575
>starting at 1999€
lel, nope
>>
>>60329575
>the little ultrabook that could
>>
>>60329575
I've had one since 2014 (got it from work), honestly it's the best laptop I've ever owned.
Battery life isn't great though, only 6 hours of use, and it's non removable so you can't just carry multiple batteries around.
>>
>>60329619
poorfag

>>60329575
get one, 100% quality
>>
>>60330132
It's expensive as fuck, but I'm getting an 800 dollar discount on a top of the line one, so I'm thinking of splurging as I need a new laptop for grad school.

I've heard the build quality is amazing. And I'd want to have somethig that last a while. Macbook pro is supposed to be very good, but I bootcamped windows sounds annoying.

>>60329619
>Eurocuck
Why are laptops so much more expensive there?
>>
>>60329575
>no GPU
How do I do my CAO and fluid shit ?
>>
>>60330440
No ultrabooks have gpu's. It'd be too big, thus defeating the purpose.

There are new ways to attach external gpu's (like the razer core). But honestly, why would you even attach a high end gpu only to bottleneck it through a dual core processor?

Just get a PC for home and keep a slick ultrabook for outside use.
>>
>>60330278
>union circle-jerk tax
>>
>>60330278
Everything is much more expensive because companies have to pay taxes here
>>

nope, shit

>>60330528
>>60330520
Don't worry my fellow eruocucks. You'll get the last laugh when I die from a prolonged hospitalization due to no prevention because of no insurance and then they still drain me of all my money after letting me die because no insurance.

In the meantime I'll enjoy having cheap electronics.
>>
>>60330487
Well I'm concidering getting either a XPS 15 or a Precision.
They have great specs for the form factor and the quadro seems good.
Now I'll have to see if the Precision is worth the price it is. Even with the student reduction it's still very expensive.
>>
>>60330278
>It's expensive as fuck
what top-end laptops aren't?
>>
>>60329575
Not even on the same prestigious level as the Apple Macbook Pro with Retina Display.
>>
>>60330095
Can it power a Linux VM? Or preferably Linux host with windows guest? Considering either the x1 carbon or xps 13 developer edition but I hear the xps got coil whine.
>>
>>60329575
I wish there was some middleground between
>Soldered RAM muh thin
and
>Supports HDD, shit screen, requires extended external battery
Theoretically this should be the t4X0s but even that has partially soldered RAM

>>
>>60331438
X1 has the best keyboard of all of them, probably the best build, and the screens are comparable.
XPS is the smallest +, and has dedicated GPU +/-.
Dunno about the HP.
>>
>>60331438
XPS 15 looks good but
>Dell
doesn't make me feel safe buying it. I also feel it's pretty overpriced considering what you're actually getting. It's also considerably heavier and bigger too.

Also, razer blade stealth would be a really solid choice if it wasn't for forced 4K and tiny ass screen. It's pretty cheap too and the build quality is supposed to be top notch (never seen it myself unfortunately because no stores even have them).

>>60331606
Macbook pro would be king if it wasn't for the shitty MacOS. Despite how popular it is, torrents for MacOS version of programs are hard to find because Macfaggots all buy software instead of pirating like normal people.
>>
>>60332176
MacOS users have well-paying jobs and contribute healthily to the economy, they're not leechers.
>>
>>60331438
The XPS 13 has stupid coil whine. Not sure about the XPS 15.

>>60332176
If you could get the Stealth without the 4K screen, I would get one now. I'd also get a d-brand skin and an Akitio Node because it's £50 cheaper than the Core.
It's super annoying. A 1080p screen would be fine at 12.5". Hopefully they refresh the Stealth or bring back the 1080p screen before August because I'm going away then.
>>
>>60332257
>overpaying is a healthy part of the economy
>>
>>60332176
I never had any problem with Dell, still have a Latidude D600 from 2003 running with OSX snow leopard.

I'll use it for school and engineering, some tasks requiring a lot of calculating power so I need something that is portable and can be used as a workstation.
>>60332284
I've heard about that but I think it's only on the 13 model.
>>
>>60332284
Resolution is either 4K or shitty QHD. If 1080p was available, there might be a case for it. Also, screen is pretty small considering everything.

>>60332257
>Implying all mac users are productive.
>Implying no windows user and unproductive.

MacOS doesn't run many programs that windows runs with no issues. Bootcamp sucks, so unless they release a windows macbook one day, it'll be relegated to having great specs and build that can't be used at it's maximum capacity.

I actually had a macbook in high school, but started having issues in college because macbook powerpoint was shit back then (and keynote was not an option as the presentations needed to be shareable across different computers). The great screen and build didn't help me if I couldn't run programs I needed for school.
>>
>>60332351
The first PC I ever built (with my dad, as a kid) was made entirely put of dell parts. I loved that PC.

However, once I started needed laptops, my experience while comparing is that Dell's were more expensive, flimsier, and more likely to be filled with bloatware then the competition. I've heard the build on the XPS is amazing and the best product Dell has produced in years, but my instincts tell me to avoid it.
>>
>>60332562
I have the exact same feeling about Toshiba and HP computers.
I used to "repair" laptops as a kid to get some money, and the shitiest ones were always HP and Toshiba (those fucking Satellites).
Now that I really need a laptop, how can I resist a XPS 15 with :
>i7 7700HQ
>16GB RAM
>GTX 1050
>512 PCIe SSD
for 1650€ ?
>>
>>60332493
Shit I thought it used to come with a 1080p screen
If it didn't in the past, it's not going to come with one in the future
I'll still keep it in my "maybe" list if the QHD comes back and the price is reasonable
>>
>>60332621
HP and Toshiba are the kings of the shit-heap, though. Dell's more mid-tier. HPs, despite being terrible, try to sell at the same price as a mid-tier laptop. Toshiba's at least know they're shit and adjust their prices accordingly. Toshiba's aren't so bad if you are looking for a cheap and disposable laptop.

>>60332643
They come in 4k and QHD, the problem with QHD (which is between 1080p and 4k), is that not all programs scale to that size, so you end up with images that sometimes look better than 1080p, and sometimes look worse than 1080p because of upscaling.

Honestly, with a screen so small, neither is really worth the extra drain on the battery.
>>
>>60329575
My next laptop. Battery replacement looks easy for down the road when the capacity diminishes, light, won't need a case. And quite frankly, I don't need much more than the base configuration. Laptop i7's are meme processors.
>>
>>60333851
What's the difference between i5 and i7 laptop CPUs? The benchmarks I've seen have the i7 coming out on top.
>>
>>60333902
Of course. They generally have higher clocks and boost clocks. But worth the hundreds extra? Not a chance, IMO.
>>
Can get a 2015 pro 13 inch on amazon for 1K
X1 carbon in 1.5K for 1080p screen.
Cmon guys im trying to not but a mackbook here help me out
>>
>>60333851
Exactly this. Only part that sucks is soldered RAM but im having difficulties trying to think of any real world scenario where id need more than 8. Faster ram would always be better but thats about it. Its hard finding another laptop as all around solid as it.

Didn't wanna start a new thread, so I'll ask here: should I get a HP Spectre x360? Looks good for note taking but read concerning things about HP build quality
>>
>>60334917
>Problems with build quality with a unibody design

They must have really fucked up then or the retards that told you to be concerned regarding build quality think their $300 black plastic walmart laptops are on the same level as $1200 aluminum/titanium convertibles.

they're decent quality. i'm of the opinion that laptops that thin are a meme though.
>>
>tfw all the execs get all the new shit
>i7, 16gb ram, 500 gb pci ssd, ips display

All to look at and send e-mails a few times a day. Those things are fucking nice, the touchpad is great. If I wasn't a poorfag wagecuck, I'd get one.
>>
>>60329575
Yet another pale imitation of the Macbook Air.
Before the Macbook Air there were netbooks, remember them?
Then, suddenly, as a response the the Macbook Air that they mocked there were "ultrabooks".
>>
>>60334856
Even with that it's over priced. If im paying over 900 I want more than 16:9 matte 1080p garbage

>Ulv CPU
>No GPU
>Still manages to have shit battery life
You're paying 2k for a meme keyboard and a 180° hinge, I'll stick to my XPS 15 for 500€ less
>>
>>60335188
QHD is shit, though, since many programs are upscaled and look objectively worse than 1080p.

4k would be nice, but every small laptop with it has a shit battery life because of it.

1080p is probably the best option for any ultraportable laptop.

Even then, they're releasing a QHD thinkpad x1 carbon in june, and the x1 yoga is QHD and even has an OLED even though it is literally a gimmick laptop.

Also.
>Not liking matte screens for ultimate glare resistance.
It's like you want to not see shit whenever you take your laptop outside a completely dark room.
>>
>>60335227
Meme's aside, the XPS 15 is literally twice it's weight and has a screen two inches bigger. They're not in the same class for comparison.

XPS 13 is more akin to the thinkpad x1 carbon.
>>
I buy high-end computers. I'm not rich, but I can afford it. Every single time I buy something that isn't a Mac, I'm disappointed. For all of the meming you guys like to do, there really isn't anything that stands up to Apple's offerings.
>$0.01 has been deposited into your account
>b-but I'm Indian and I can't afford it s-so...
>HAHA overpriced babbys toy xDdd
>fag!
This X1 carbon is going to feel like a pile of shit just 6 months later while an equivalently priced Macbook Pro is going to still be a slick piece of kit.
>>
>>60335353
>I know nothing about thinkpad build quality
people in /tpg/ like to meme but it's still completely up to snuff
don't talk about things you only think you know about
>>
>>60335280
I want 1440p minimum theres no reason my 4 year old phone should have a better screen than a 2K laptop its a fucking joke and ill take matte if its over 1080p.
>>
>1920x1080
Yikes what a joke. MBP pricing without any of the luxury.
>>
>>60329575
If you want a thin & light ThinkPad, get the ThinkPad Yoga instead. It's less than half the price and has a GeForce 940M. Also currently on clearance at Bad Buy.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-thinkpad-yoga-2-in-1-14-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-256gb-solid-state-drive-black/4456400.p?skuId=4456400

>>60336022
It comes with a stylus too if that's a factor.
>>
>>60336022
I don't want a dGPU.
>>
>>60336107
The 940M is also super low power, so it wouldn't make much difference from the Intel 520 integrated. It's pretty standard in a lot of ultrabooks now.

X1 Carbon reporting in.

Love it. Best keyboard out of any ultrabook, great built quality, lightweight and sexy. Picked mine up for half the retail price about a year ago. Fully specced as well, even with a touch display. Seller didn't list this, but whatever.

I will shill this shit until I die.
>>
>>60339536
what battery life are you getting?
>>
>>60339558
Averages around 4 hours when bingewatching Youtube / Plex and some browsing inbetween with Chrome.

A bit disappointing, but I don't know how much the battery had been used before I bought it. Beyond that, it's solid device.
>>
X1 First Gen owner here, bought one the moment they released and haven't been let down once. The build quality is solid as fuck and it's been around the world 4 times in the back of a backpack.

Will be grabbing the newest one when QHD hits since there's some serious gains now since my first gen, the other gens left me sitting on the fence.

Only thing I'm hating is no SD card which I use for my camera but I guess I always bring my microusb to charge anyway which I can use so not a complete no sell.

Buy you will not regret.

>>

How do you find such deals?
>>
>>60339943
Found mine on Finn.no (Norwegian equivalent to Craigslist.)

Just keep looking every now and then. Had been looking for an X1 for a few weeks before the listing appeared.
>>
It seems to be a pretty popular high end laptop among people I know. I've used one a few times and it's pretty good. It's not any faster than my 6 year old elitebook though and the screen is about the same, so the MSP is muh thinness I guess. I also don't see how it's any different from the macbook pro that /g/ hates so much.
>>
>ultrabook
Dogshit, 13 inch laptop is a useless form factor. -u and dual core CPUs are shit. The only devices you should own are a phone and a 15 inch laptop, and/or a desktop.

>>60332176
>it's pretty overpriced considering what you're actually getting

If only it wasn't a hit or miss in terms of QA. If you get a good one it's an amazing laptop.
I'd buy it from the outlet, always had good experiences with it and fairly nice discounts.

Got the latest XPS 15 FHD with 512 GB SSD at $1300 and I'm sure better deals can be found if you wait.

>>60330095
My 2014 model up and died 6 months ago in a pre-bios bootloop.

>>

I live almost full time in hotels due to work and need portable entertainment with some recreational deving capabilities. Got a company laptop to be able to check my work mail but it's 15" and heavy. Not particularly fast either. It's kind of shit to use from the bed due to its size and weight. Rather use an ultrabook.
