Any decent mobo has 5.1 and even optical output, why would you ever consider standalone soundcard aside from when your integrated one breaks
>>
>>60329693
To drive 300+ ohm headphones
>>
get an asus xonar if you really want a dedicated soundcard (although they're only any better in circumstances where the integrated sound suffers from coil whine), expensive cards are audiophile placebo
>>

Get an external DAC and amp, even a chink one will be miles ahead of any internal card.

An internal soundcard is limited by the very electrically noisy environment. It only takes one shoddy component or design out of the thousands in your PC to cause sound problems.

"electrical noise"

Seriously. Anybody who still uses soundcard in 2017 is retarded
>>

Soundcards are still useful in low latency stuff when the on-board just doesn't cut it
>>
>>60329054
If my mobo doesnt have digital/multichannel out, can i use one of those chink USB dongles that send out optical?
>>
>>60330545
Professionals use macOS for low audio latency
>>
>>60330564
You can. its all digital so no worry about audio quality from a shitty dac

The inside of your PC case is gonna have a lot of RF and you'll especially have issues if you sandwich it up against a GPU that's running hundreds of watts through little traces and VRMs. Only way to make an internal card sound good is tons of shielding. Hell, I get noise in my speakers if the cable gets too close the the back of my PC.

I have a hifi amp and some old mission speakers plugged into my mobo's onboard sound. Headphones plug into amp when needed. Sounds amazing. Unless you're going to inspect the room inch by inch with dedicated sound monitoring tools and coat the walls with acoustic foam, whatever you can knock together on a budget will be good, with or without a dedicated sound card.
