I tried it once with some 38mm thick 4900rpm delta fans. With them at 100% (being fed from the psu) the torque on start up snapped the skewer.

"I need to replace my buzzy CPU fan with this misfit fan but don't want to use cable ties, because they might melt. A heat sink gets hot, - hmm, how about using some of this copper wire from the old fan?"

"Anon, wire is conductive, if it falls on the motherboard it'll short and you'll fry your machine"

"No, thermal considerations are far more important. Don't want melty plastic. Also copper is what heatsink pipes are made of and belongs on the heatsink"

"Fuck this, those wires aren't staying in place I'll just use duct tape to hold them on"

Sigh

fun times!
i had a CPU with a broken iGPU. no problem. used a video card. problem solved.
i don't game. and after a while i wanted to get rid of the 70w graphics card. waste of energy for just browsing the internet.
last week i bought an upgraded CPU.
replaced it.
turn computer on.
worked perfectly.
start-->shutdown
computer shutsdown
immediately turns right back on.
check bios.
bios is fine.
restart computer.
shutdown computer
immediately starts up again.
turns out i probably nicked a wire.
luckily i had an old PSU lying around.
my back PSU was meant for my old computer case which had the PSU positioned at the top, my current case has the PSU slot at the bottom.
luckily i had already ghetto rigged my computer case before.
i made a giant hole at the top of my case years ago.
i just put the PSU on the top of my case
wired everything through the hole.
it ran alright for this past week.
my 430w PSU arrived in the mail today.
>>
>>60338578
the reason why i had a giant hole in my case:
my last job, i had a co-worker who did electronic recycling events around the city.
he would come back with gaylords filled with old computer parts.
i would always dig through the stuff.
i found a brand new Dell computer.
many hard drives
many memory sticks
i basically built/upgraded all my sisters and brothers computers out of these parts.

i found an alienware all-in-one CPU watercooler.
damn thing had its own proprietary power connector
stripped the cables and wired it to a 4-pin fan connector
then realized i needed a way to put the radiator on the outside of the fan
decided the best way to do that was to cut a giant hole at the top.
that lasted about 2 years before i got tired of the fan spinning at full speed for a second every time i turned my computer on. sounded like a blow dryer.

putting a fan directly against a surface does absolutely nothing, the air has to blow over it.... which it can't do because the body of the fan is blocking it.

i was going to post oc but i changed my mind
also can't figure out how to get photos off of my blackberry curve

its just 92mm case fans ziptied to my r9 280x shroud after i broke one of the original fan blades
shit was broke anyway, one of the fans never spun up and it wobbled.
>>
>>60342573
oh yeah and it doesnt work, gpu now reaches in excess of 90C with only slight load vs 80ish under full load before

maybe i should have just bought replacement fans, i thought these bigger ones would push more air but they don't go as fast
non-silent fans and a controller would have been best, i think.

My ram fan, it has been sitting there for 10 years, thanks to some fence wire.

Also, the motherboard has a pencil mod (every 2 or 3 years I re-do the "traces".

there's at least 2mm between the fan and motherboard surface tough, and it does move the air near vrms just fine. Look closely.
