If I knew a way I would tell you. I think the issue is that a VPN has to constantly stay connected, so your phone is constantly "tunneling" like its downloading/uploading something.

you might be able to configure it to where it shuts down all network connectivity when the screen is locked, but that seems very unpractical

Pretty much this the only way is to just disable mobile data and wifi whenever you don't play to use your phone, your carrier is constantly sending data to and from your phone
