>Information on how to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

Current CPUs informations:
>G4560 for budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>i3 are only worthwhile for dwarf fortress & single-purpose emulator boxes
>i5 aren't worthwhile. Get Ryzen 5, drop down to G4560, or up to R7/i7
>R5 1400 is not worthwhile unless discounted
>i7-7700k is good but bad value. If over budget, an R5 is probably as good or better for you
>R7/Xeon for compute/multitask/mixed use, R5 if on budget.

Currently worthwhile GFX cards:
>RX570, RX480(if cheap & not blower), RX580, 1080, 1080TI
>RX570 is usually all you need for 1080p@60hz
>RX550 & RX560 are worth considering if you just need 6 monitor support for cheap and/or play low end shit
>1060 & 1070 are worth considering if you already have a Gsync monitor. 1050Ti is for mITX builds or if on sale at ~$100
>Nvidia GPU + Ryzen has issues in some specific games atm (Civ6, RoTR, Rocket League)
>Budget builds: consider integrated graphics over a card weaker than RX560
>May for Vega

General:
>No brand/model loyalty. Parametric filters on pcpartpicker can help
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX can often save cost as the board+case is usually cheaper
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs

Get 1440p 144hz yo.

The extra CUs and VRAM don't help hardly for 1080p. Moar ROPs, higher clocked ROPs, and ROP IPC helps 1080p. RX570 and RX580 have the same ROPs.

So whenever EK releases vega blocks, do you think they'll be smol like the Fury X blocks, or do you think some of the AIB partners will use longer PCBs?

Which one for my next build? looking for something smaller. Gonna OC on air and will use 2 3.5" HDDs (maybe 3 in the future) and 2 2.5" SSDs.
I think cooling is the main issue here since I'm not water cooling.

i doubt they will release a single slot version even if it's long with the tdp, they could barely get a single slot 1070 at 150w
just my 2 cents, it would be interesting though
i would love to see a fat 3 slot dual fan design though, taller than normal too, with some nice big slow fans

>>60322019
Put the monitor 11% further away from your eyes and it will look the same as 24".
$150 more is nothing for what you get.
That GPU is also almost $70 more for little benefit in in 1080p.

>>i5 aren't worthwhile. Get Ryzen 5, drop down to G4560, or up to R7/i7
>>i7-7700k is good but bad value. If over budget, an R5 is probably as good or better for you
Who the fuck wrote this marketing bullspin bullshit? Intel's line-up absolutely BTFO out of Ryzen for 95% of games out today. An i5-7500 trounces a 6-core (with HT, mind you) in Adobe CC suites and scales far better with faster memory frequencies than Ryzen can ever hope to achieve. The i3 is objectively the best gaming CPU for any game running an API older than DX11. The i7-7700K is the best value to performance CPU on the market right now, especially when overclocked.

Can someone make a REAL, non-shill thread and report this one for advertising and marketing?
>>

>>60322101
I need at least 2x 3.5 drives, I already compromised on not having a optical drive (which I use from time to time), gonna use an external one when I need it.
>>
After fighting my broken build for around a year now I am calling it quits and upgrading. So this is basically an upgrade. What do you guys think? I am going for a mid-ranged computer, the most graphically intensive games I own are Dark Souls and Nier.

Also, a note on the heatsink: I have taken off and put on that heat sink multiple times throughout the year and it is a huge pain in the ass. Are there any other heat sinks which are easier to install? Preferably third party, because I live in the south-east USA and it gets hot here.

depending on your workload maybe, the 2670 is a mean deal right now and is 80% as good as a 1800x, 2 of them makes it 160% the performance
you're gonna be locked into a dead end system though, where on am4 you'd have upgrade options for the next 4 years
wait for amd to make an announcement in regard to naples if you can, or wait a bit and see if the rumors about a 16 core desktop chip are true. either way naples will either be a bangin deal like ryzen has been so far or get intel to drop their prices, doesnt affect the going rate of used gear, so it's not like you're missing out on a deal

I have the Gsync meme but it's not important to me

>>
>>60322191
you already paid for gsync, so even if vega is the same or slightly better than a 1080ti for the same or less price, you shouldnt have a problem paying more for the same

apparently there's supposed to be an announcement coming on the 16th. as for release i think they are targetting 3rd quarter. so far naples looks crazy good, and the fact that the ryzen chips are only losing because of clockspeed and have way lower tdp makes them very interesting for server chips. potentially running higher performance at same tdp from intel, or running same performance lower tdp from intel
its looking really really good for naples, even better than for r5 or r7

>1440 is pointless on a 24 inch screen
A 24" screen is something that I want while 1440p isn't.

>$150 more is nothing for what you get.
WHAT THE FUCK DO I GET?

If I push the monitor away to make it look smaller, I can't fucking see any of the extra details that 1440p would give me over 1080p.

So, you're telling me to spend more money just to hurt my framerate.

>That GPU is also almost $70 more for little benefit in in 1080p.
Looking at benchmarks comparing a stock 480 to a stock 580, this is kind of a thing, BUT it isn't any different in 1440p than it is 1080p.
>>
>>60322279

Just a heads up on the assrock. It's got 12 phases. It'll consume more power, even if it's not drawing from those phases.

remove anti static wrist band from wiki

"Wireless" or "dissipative" wrist straps are available, which claim to protect against ESD without needing a ground wire, typically by air ionization or corona discharge. These are widely regarded as ineffective,[9][10][11] if not fraudulent, and examples have been tested and shown not to work.[12][13] Professional ESD standards all require wired wrist straps.[9]
>>
>>60323603
But the wiki isn't talking about the bullshit wireless straps. I think anyone with half a brain knows that wearing a metal bracelet with no wire to a grounding isn't going to do shit.

sli in the future, you would want to go 1080ti i would think. also, if you're gonna go with an i7 that would be the one, unless you're going to delid. although since you seem to be thinking about upgrading in the future i would think ryzen would fit better, as you'll be able to upgrade your cpu too.
besides the cpu everything looks good, maybe consider going up to a 750 just to be safe on psu though
and i just noticed monitor, i7 is probably better call for 144hz

How often are good m-ITX HTPC boxes on sale?

I need to make a few cheap testing builds. Like one with a GCN APU, and a, i5-2500, i5-4570.
The problem is the case makes the cost stupid.
I like picture related, but it's $80, which winds up being 1/3rd the build cost or more for each.

You'd think such a tiny case, so little material, I would get for <$40 easy.
There are cheaper ones, but I still want it to be compact, look nice, and have decent airflow.

>>

Yes. Most B350 boards seem to boot the x4 GPU at the bottom first so it can boot for your Linux desktop and have the x16 one for pass through which is grouped on the CPU.

It seems lm_sensors isn't working except on ASRock. But MSI did say they're working on improving Linux support. But the pro4 mATX will only take a 2 slot GPU.

I had bought a memeboard from asus a while back (z97 sabertooth s) with the cool looking white armor for my all white build (i browse /pol/). Now it has these shitty little assist fans to blow around air under the armor. But even then my VRM hit about 60+c while gaming.

Now Anus says that their mosfets or whatever have been tested for thousands of hours at 100c+ so it should be fine. But the temps in thermal armor 2 actually mark it as red, which has me worried a little.

My OC is quite modest, 1.250v 4,5ghz. With load line calibration turned off.

2d nand TLC or 3d nand TLC? Mushink has a cheap 480gb 2d nand ssd online for 130 euros while crucial has a 525gb 3d nand TLC for 146 euros.

>The i3 is objectively the best gaming CPU for any game

No, it's not the best CPU in terms of anything. It's not the fastest consumer CPU from Intel, that's the i7-7700K. And it offers really poor value compared to the G4560. If you're unable to do the basic math required to understand this then you should go learn some math or shut up.

The very simple reason I agree with OP on this is that the G4560 really does offer great value for your money. The step up (local prices, anyway) from that to a i3 is double the price of a G4560. Be honest and think about it, is a i3 twice as good as a G4560? If you actually believe that then please go ahead and tell us all about how the cheapest i3 is twice as fast and gives you twice as many FPS as a G4560. And if you don't then you should realize that the value for your money when buying a G4560 is excellent while the value dollar for dollar of a i3 is as bad as it gets. This is why it is totally fair to recommend skipping the i3 and the i5 for that matter, if you want a cheap CPU then it's obvious that you should get the G4560 and if you're not on a budget then you're getting more value for your money by going to something like the R5 1600.

And nobody cares if something takes 0.0014 or 0.0016 seconds in Adobe CC, not even a little. How long it takes to encode a x265 video or compress a 8GB large folder matters because those are the actually CPU-intensive tasks that take more than a millisecond.

Guys, I only build PCs once every 5/6 years so I don't get it, why is RAM so expensive now? I remember they were like, the cheapest possible parts in a computer.

I was considering building a new PC with Ryzen5 1600 + GTX 1060, but I preferably need 16gb of ram, and the cheapest DDR4 I found cost 140€. This feels disgustingly expensive to me.

Should I buy just one 8gb bar and wait for the prices to go down?

what would be best to upgrade? I know the cpu is getting older but it does everything i need, although it is limiting me in some of the games I'd like to play, but I already know I'm upgrading to a 4k monitor this summer for work related stuff
>things im already planning on
fury x would have to be ghetto rigged in the case, my dumb ass didnt measure and it doesnt fit with the cryorig in there, got a buyer lined up, will be switching to 980ti in 3-4 weeks
gonna drop the 1tb drive and slap another 512gb ssd in there, to let me fit a longer psu (info below). most of what is on there anyway is just games and media, most of that can be moved to the NAS as a quicker access than re downloading, and that'll work fine
psu situation is a mess. had a nice 1250w seasonic before switching cases, a psu in another rig died and i had to swap my personal one out for that, using a backup 450w and a 480 now. Would like to go back to a nice psu and higher wattage (750 or higher for future proofing, never know when the next 290x is gonna drop), but idk what is the go to these days. Only thing is it has to be from newegg, got the credit from the RMA there, dont wanna spend more than 150. Any suggestions?
tl;dr
switching hdd for ssd, need to keep the other 3 pcie cards, need new psu (150 and under, preferably 750w and up gold), not sure what to upgrade other than all that

960 is good for tf2 and dota a new processor and mobo would be best for you. 1600 is a very good processor but if you can get the 1400 on sale I would go for that. Upgrading this two parts would probably do your pc wonders
>>
>>60326499
it isn't about convenience, its about quality, interference, signal strength, etc.
you probably dont need an amp for 50ohm, but the driving capability will be better and the power delivery wont have interference and will be cleaner. dac is gonna do you more good here though, the amp would just be the "finishing piece" so to speak

It's not that others did not. It's just that in the recent years most of the northbridge functions have been moved to the CPU. Pic related, It's how things used to be before. Video editing needs a lot of ram. Unless you render somewhere else and even then..
CUDA acceleration is also a huge plus for editing with Premiere so that AMD graphic card can fuck off. As far as I know, openAL acceleration for Premiere isn't anywhere near as good as CUDA on Nvidia GPUs.

Unless you're not really serious about editing, this doesn't sound optimal at all.

No. The only reason for a 7700K is if you strictly only play videogames on your computer. And at low resolutions. And even that is debatable. If that's all you do, go ahead. It's there recommended on the OP.

For any other use case a Ryzen 5 is much better.

Got fucked by a monitor company. Day after I recieved it from newegg, I talked to their support about a dead pixel and they told me to send it in. Weeks later I get it back and it still has the same problem. I talked to two support peeps and they basically BS and said there is no problem. I literally asked the first time if I should send it in for a dead pixel. Then they do a bunch of shit about making me take pictures of the screen. I say I only have a low res camera and they say they need a picture of the whole screen, 1080p. then they say the shape of the dead pixel isn't right (shitty camera) and there is no problem.

How should I go about compiling the chat logs etc to post around? Anyone can chat with me and go over things? Discord maybe?
>>
>>60330626
pretty sure dead pixels are NEVER covered under most warranties bro. these companies find new ways to fuck you every year

>>60330651
The thing is I literally asked before sending it. Should I send it in over a dead pixel? Was told yes. I asked if they would fix it and if they couldn't fix it would I get a replacement, they said yes. I made it damn clear.

Then they basically withhold the new monitor from me for weeks during shipping/1 week of repair.

When I get it back dead pixel is the same. Support note says "Turned it on for 24 hours no trouble". Doesn't mention pixel.

The bullshit is that they lied and said they would fix it, then fuck me over later and insult me during the chat.

I never said it was the memest. You could get pretty expensive with it.

Like this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jXmT7h

Point is to spend money on a cheap mobo and CPU now, so that you can later on upgrade it, and not lose too much money on it.
>>
>>60330907
Do you have any contact info or discord? Should I post the rough in here?

I'll set up a dummy email give me a sec

>g4560

>OC to 4ghz
580 is barely an increase from a 480, and for everyday tasks the i5 with 4 real cores OC'd would blow the pants off a hyper threaded pentium. The small price for a better mobo with the capability to overclock an even better cpu later on and with more pcie lanes would give him even more room to upgrade later on. I do like your idea however.
>>
>>60330981
Actually I'll set up a /g/ discord when I get home I'll post it in here and make a thread for it. Unless there is already one

Only 60 more dollars and better options for future upgrades.
>>
>>60331072
RX 580 is currently cheaper than RX 480. If you can find RX 480 for 10% cheaper, then go for it. You're better off getting ryzen over i5-6400 afaik.

>i5-6400 175$
>z270 board 100$
>total 275$

>r5 1500x 190$
>b350 board $80
>total 270$

So you save $30 for better hardware, with a better upgrade path, especially if you spend a little more on the mobo for something that will last you to the end of the AM4 socket. Pretty sure you're gonna have to buy a CPU cooler if you want to OC the 6400, so with that you're going to notice some price difference. The 1500x comes with a good cooler, so you can overclock it a little without needing to buy a new one.

Most boards don't have bclk overclocking, and afaik only some specific z270 can overclock a 6400, it's only premium boards. 1151 is going to be dead soon, so there's no upgrade path for the future, like one more release on this platform.

XFX AMD RADEON RX 480 8GB GTR XXX or

GIGABYTE AMD RADEON RX 580 AORUS TXR, 8GB?

price is almost identical
>>
>>60331243
RX 580, it's a better performer. Both of those cards are supposed to OC really well.
>>
>>60331230
Eh, I meant you save $5, was thinking r5 1400 first, but I think it's worth going 1500x for the included cooler.

Guys, I did something wrong and don't know what...

So I bought parts:
Ryzen 1700
RAM DDR4 8GB x2 2666 MHz (kingston fury)
Gigabyte geforce 1050TI (couldn't find any rx 480 or 580 in my cunt, so took this for now)
corsair cs550m PSU
asus prime a320m-k motherboard
and shitty Acer v226hql monitor (just for now)

Put parts together, connected PSU, HDD, case front USB, power, reset buttons, audio output, inserted 1050TI into PCIE slot, connected monitor to graphics card via DVI, turn on PC, fans spinning, looks like everythings working, no smokes, no nothing, but monitor says "No signal"

Thought it's graphics card, replaced graphics card with old AMD ati - same

I have no idea where did I failed...
It seems everything is in right place...

Is it motherboard? I can't think anything else...

Your mobo isn't am4... You should have compatability checked it before buying.
>>
>>60331466
Oh nvm, it is... what is that for chipset? Never heard of it.

Might be the ram, I don't know if there's ram support for those sticks.
Ryzen is a super fiddly socket for now, you should've been aware when you bought it.
