that's a tough question, its heavily decided by what you do. You can heavily productive in just a web browser which will be the same regardless of de. I spend all of my productive hours in a web browser and visual studio(could be any ide it doesn't matter) so if I use Linux some thing like xfce would be ideal. Try them all and see what gets in your way the least. As much I despise it windows is that for me but it may very well be I3 or xfce or cinnamon for you

The lab computers used to have it as an option at my school. I'd always use it and be working before anyone else because KDE was the default and took forever to load up. My senior year they "upgraded" their system image and got rid of everything that went gnome/unity/kde/lxde which made me sad.
