How hard should it be? What paint should I use? Which parts I shouldn't mess with?

Does anyone have any experience with installing Debian on a t470? Mine's arriving in a couple days. I fiddled around with debian briefly like 5 years ago, I remember having trouble with wireless drivers on my laptop and giving up. I'm pretty much a noob, will I run into any difficulty?

Through my lurking of /r/Thinkpad, consensus is it's ok but not T/X good
>>
>>60308939
It's "decent".
Better than any ideapad or shitpad or other consumer laptops, but worse than T/X/P series.
>>
>>60305994
I have not done it myself but I assume this method will work:

1. Disassemble and detach lid + bezel
2. Mask screen with newspaper and tape
3. Mask thinkpad logo on the top
4. Clean parts you want to paint with soap and water and wait until dry
5. Spray prime the desired parts with black/white primer (spray a thin layer and wait for it to dry)
6. Use an airbrush or spraycan to slowly add layers of the desired color to each part and wait until dry
7. Spray a layer of matte or gloss finish in order to create texture and protect your paintjob
8. Reassemble when finish is dry

Yes, but the question is, why would you bother when you get a free license for Windows 7 with the computer, which works perfectly fine?

>>60310243
The newest ones are probably better than the equivalent 14" T-series, just because of the screen. Since more or less every model is using the low voltage processors now, you may as well go for the best one since cost is no object.

My gf uses the plain T430 as her main machine, I use my modded T430 as my main machine, and I plan to upgrade the T540p and decide from there if I wanna keep the new modern layout or not.

My P50s is in repair limbo, but I think Lelnovo is about to send me a replacement unit (which they claimed they weren't allowed to do, until I fucking shamed them on fucking reddit).

>>60314696
It does. The only T430 upgrade I'm missing is the WQHD screen, which is a pipe dream anyway.

The T540p is an easy upgrade path though. TouchPad, Processor, Display, RAM, Heatsink and Fan, done.

Haven't gone down the modding route yet, though I might replace the screen one day. Mine is an X230. Took it apart yesterday, cleaned dust out and put fresh paste on the processor. Needed something to do while I'm waiting on the RMA for the graphics card of my main PC (hint: don't buy Zotac.)

whats the normal battery life for a 6 cell x220 with ubuntu?

>>
Guys, I bought a T430s and I have discrete graphics card on it (NVS 5200m) and I can't find the fuken proprietary drivers for it. The ones recommended by Ubuntu is nvidia-340, but I've installed that and it doesn't give me all the options in the nvidia-setting (I'm missing things like Sync to VBlank and stuff like that. Also it doesn't seem to recognize my screen for some reason). I've also tried searching the nvidia website for the driver and I only got "Linux long lived driver" (whatever the fk that means) and I've checked the version of that driver (375.66) and installed it through the graphics-drivers ppa (nvidia-370) and the same thing, I still miss some some settings. Idk where the hell to search anymore especially since this card isn't exactly popular... help? :\

Dumb question time: I set up tpacpi-bat with 30-80 thresholds on my T430s. Does it trigger any time the battery is over 80%, or only when it actually hits 80%?
>>
>>60317420
It will start charging once the battery drops to 30% and stop once it hits 80%. If you have been using it on battery and it gets to say... 50% and you plug it back in, it won't start charging until it drops back below 30%.
>>
>>60317420
As for going over 80%, it won't charge until it drops below the minimum threshold of 30%. The exception would be if you entered a manual charge command such as tlp-fullcharge. In that case, the battery would charge to full, then go back to using your 30-80 threshold.
>>
>>60317525
Yeah, I get that, I'm just curious because it was already over 80% when I enabled it. I guess I can just leave it on the charger and see if it keeps going up.
>>
I am a bit confused.
I checked temperatures with both Speccy and CoreTemp, however under light to middle load CoreTemp shows a temperature of about 50°C on average, while Speccy shows something around 62°C.
Which one should I trust? I recently changed the paste and I also live in a mildly hot country

Speccy also shows your motherboard temps, which are obviously separate from your CPU. You sure you're not looking at that?

Keeping the battery fully charged shortens its lifespan. Completely discharging it also does this.

So the ideal way to maximize battery lifespan is to keep it from doing either. Hence, charging thresholds.

I'm thinking about (((vlogging))) my mod journey on this thing, since I plan on upgrading it to an Extreme Processor, flashing the BIOS to allow overclocking, upgrading to the GPU heatsink to dissipate better, get the fan with the largest vents, swapping the TouchPad, putting in a 3K display, and if I get lucky enough and snag a cheap W540 motherboard, I'm going to throw that in here because it gives me a much better GPU and two extra RAM slots and I want to fall for the 32GB meme (my P50s has 2x 16GB DDR3L, unfortunately the xx40 series doesn't accept more than 8GB a stick).

Anyone interested in a mod guide / vlog for the "modern" xx40 series?
>>
>>60321516
Oh, I'm also going to be making a T430 from scratch build once my fan and new motherboard comes in, which will include the overclocking guide.

I'm putting an extreme in the T540p, and overclocking it. T540p also gets 32GB of RAM when you swap in a W540 motherboard (cheaper than just buying a W540).

The GPU is where it really loses.

I'll give you that a haswell XM may be a few % faster than the 6700HQ especially if you manage to OC it despite it throttling at stock, but isn't that a few hundred dollars just for the CPU? And you're still missing new CPU instructions, M2 slots, DDR4, TB3
>>
>>60323235
Performance wise it all comes out to cheaper performance per dollar. And yes, the XM is like $350 - $400. It's the priciest part by far.

It's not better than *just* the 6700HQ, it's better than ANY processor on mobile, including the new Xeon at stock, both on single thread rating and all cores.

You misjudge how small the incremental updates are.
>>
>>60321411
What is that, a franken-business laptop?

Also, what size does a mSATA SSD drive have to be to fit in a T530? Half or regular?
>>
>>60323235
>>60323265
Also lol, it doesn't throttle on stock. It's been done before on the W530. All 15 inch systems have significantly better cooling systems, and I'm upgrading the heatsink and fan.

my T430 runs my 4830QM @ 4.2GHz just fine.
>>
>>60316664
So like $250 real dollars

>>
>>60323000

>>
>>60323449
I did my fair share of googling, including some just now.

It looks like the machines have software issues related to throttling, NOT cooling issues. No reports of it overheating, just retarded throttling.

That makes it a non-issue, since a modified BIOS can turn off BIOS throttling.

>>60323893
It's kind of strange that no one's done this before if it's so straightforward, given it's one of the main issues with the W540. However, given how much people dislike this model, it wouldn't be that surprising if no one's bothered.

Also, I think throtting is determined by the EC in that series.

Well, I went to actual meme and bought X220. I planned to use this as my GNU/Linux learning platform. A little later I found out that someone was selling a T30 for 10€ so I thought I would get it. I was sure it was from here that I started to dig my own grave because this computer was terribly packed and did not have anything else except the computer itself. Later on I bought cmos battery because I though it was problem but then I found out it was under SVP password. I was like wtf is this? This computer alone, was a paperweight for me about 5-6months because I did not have slightest clue what to do.
After I managed to open it, to my surprise, it actually had 1400x1050 screen which, from what I know, is quite valuable and definitely more than 10€ lol.
And recently I broke my X220 keyboard and I'm waiting for its replacement. (I need to stop playing with water)
Other thinkpads that I own are
>X220,T30,T40,T60(x2),z60m,T61,701cs
So they are quite old machines but plenty enough for me and my doings.
I lurked my local ebay-type website a lot to spot good deals. I certainly have made some bad deals and payed too much for old machines but I do think that the botnet freedom is that expensive nowadays.

I'm also checking these computers for possible use as a travel laptop all the way to Siberia. Siberia teaches.

ac 2x2 is 867Mbps, n 2x2 is 300Mbps. And since the 7260 is newer than 6205 it has lower power consumption (about 1W less), which means your laptop should last for 1/5 time longer.when idling/low load.

Toshiba's consumer line has this cheap "programmed obsolescence" strategy where they sell you something and you have to replace it in a year or two because the performance blows in comparison to when you bought it.

Depends on # of cells your battery has, to put it simply
>3 cell ~3 hours
>6 cell ~6 hours
>9 cell ~9 hours
The conversion is direct because for example, a genuine 9 cell has 96Wh capacity, 2nd gen ThinkPads power consumption hovers between ~8-15W when doing normal computer stuff, averaging at ~10-12W.
This is, of course, assuming it's 100% capacity.

Also I've seen here X220's claiming 10h with a 9 cell, which might be possible since it has a small screen and the screen is what draws the most power. A T420 and T520 will have a bit less battery life in the same conditions

wifi n standard is at least twice slower than ac.
If you use wifi network to access your home server or you just got a fast internet connection then this will hurt to use.
Intel centrino 6205 (best allowed card for x230, unless you sacrifice web camera and you get 3 wifi antennas - then the best card is 6300) is power hungry, it generates a lot of heat which transfers to palmrest, and doesn't play well in crowded wifi networks. That's why it's advisable to upgrade to 7260 (newest intel card you can use with minipcie ports).

And even if you're still using n-standard wifi access point then it's better to upgrade to 7260 anyway. My personal experience is 6205/6300 cards getting 12MB/s max read speeds from home server (via standard 300Mbps 3x3 n access point) while 7260 gets constant 18-19MB/s. That's a lot improvement.

>>60332475
Don't.
I got 820 g2 and it's full of software bugs. Keyboard is CANCER, same goes for shitty fingerprint reader, bugged as fuck touchpad and trackpoint. Oh, and it randomly shuts down. Not to mention overheating issues, even when it's just i7-5600u ULV CPU inside.
G3 has some bug fixes, but it's still shit. IPS screen hurts to look at even at 50% brightness. They even removed dGPU option from g3 when they realized this shitty heatsink can't handle 15W+ TDP.
And the battery is known to sometimes caught fire when laptop is """mishandled"""

I have a Elitebook 820 G3 as my work laptop and the other anon is spot on about the issues with the G2. I had to endless problems with my G2, had the motherboard changed twice, one new keyboard, new SSD replaced.

Thankfully we are now on a hardware leasing model so we just get the newest HP stuff and if it breaks an engineer either comes out or we get a new one sent.

So far with the G3 I haven't had any issues yet, had it a good 4 months now.

you're right, let's compare to the X230, since it's the direct competitor

>ghosting/burn-in issues of X220 panels resolved

>>
>>60333797
The only thing that goes into trash is your sissy-tier dual core cpu you got there.
You can always replace the stock hp panel with IPS x230 one via 51nb extender cable which costs like $5, but you CANNOT get a 45W+ CPU in x230, because intel doesn't produce such CPUs in BGA type, and even if they did x230 has shitty cooling system which cannot be even modded to handle more, because there is no absolutely no free space inside the chasis.
Also which stock hp panel are you referring to? You know there are two, one of them being complete shit?
I don't have such issues with mine, and I used T430 1600x900 screen before I upgraded to 2570p. All I can say is in comparison with t430 screen it's god tier.

Hello, anons.

I'm a brazilian student and I need a notebook to use in the university library, I have little money (even if I had many money to buy a good thinkpad, I would not buy it, because we have many thefts in Brazil), so I think that thinkpads are a good choice for me.

http://produto.mercadolivre.com.br/MLB-867061270-notebook-lenovo-t400-core-2-duo-2gb-ddr3-160g-promoco-_JM

It's the one that i want to buy (470 R$ brazilian currency is very cheap), T400. I asked some brazilian anons about it and them tell me it's a "pé de boi/bull's foot thinkpad" and it's very durable. But one anon told me it's very old and it would give me many problems, not only with battery, but with internal compenents. It's true?

I will install a light linux DE and use it for watch video lessons, open pdfs and docs, acess university portals and use some softwares of mathematics.

It's a good idea? I can't find other notebook with this price or more cheap in brazilian market.

Excuse me for something, i'm a newfag.
>>
>>60333797
and let's not stop there, let's also look at the X230 TN display
>again, 1366x768, you won't hear any defense from me on this
>234 nits
>195:1 contrast ratio
>1.2 black level
>similarly atrocious viewing angles, they are low-end TN panels after all
your next post will tell me all about how you only ever use your desktop monitor with your supposed ultraportable
>>
>>60333898
>two panels, one of them complete shit
>but they're both TN panels so it's a complete lottery as to whether your screen is garbage or not
good job HP

and if we're talking mods then we're talking X330. your shit panel has already been destroyed badly enough by lelnovo stock panels, you don't want it compared to an XPS 13 one.

I thought that T400 and R400 were one and the same, but it does not seem to be true.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/difference-between-lenovo-t400-and-r400.372719/

"In general, T-series is thinner and lighter than the R-series. The SL-series is a cheaper "multimedia" version of the R-series.

The R400 only comes with integrated Intel graphics and can be configured with a budget Celeron processor. I think you should stick with a Core2 Duo processor instead of the inferior Celeron.

The T400 has an extra option for switchable graphics, meaning you can switch between Intel graphics and a faster ATI graphics. The ATI graphics is better for applications with 3D (like games). For just office applications, the Intel graphics is good enough.

Also, the T400 has a thinner CD/DVD drive. The R400 has a thicker CD/DVD drive.

In terms of price, T > R > SL ."

It's correct?

Thanks for the note, i am going to check it with the seller.

Yes to the first question, not sure about the second.

I believe MacOS installs require a jewish adapter though. They won't work intel, you need their stupid atheros garbage

I rendered a video at 100% cpu usage with my T61 and it stayed about 73c the whole time with T7300.

yes, GPU has it's own little TDP (10W) and it also produces heat. My old x230 was shitting itself during fallout new vegas gameplay.
>hard time
did you see heatsink of x230/x220 and 2570p?
2570p heatpipe is much shorter, also fan is faster, so heat is being blown the fuck out much more efficiently.
And there is about 2,5mm space in 2570p between the back cover and heatsink, so you can stick 1-1,5mm cooper plate to it so it handles quad cores even better.
Right now I don't see any throttling during 1h gameplay of cs:go, which is known to be cpu intensive.
