It's a passive approach to checking websites for new content.

Name one good alternative to RSS for keeping up with new content from blogs, webcomics and etc that you care enough about to read every update.
produces too much noise and bullshit and there's no nice at a glance listing of all the new stuff from each account, you just get a dumb feed or you have to click on each feed's name to see new stuff.

Everyone keeps saying RSS is dead and old and shit but there is literally nothing new that does its job as well as it does.
