Alright /g/ is there any reason I should seriously learn Perl nowadays? I picked up the O'Reilly book on it back in high school and surprisingly enough I loved the wonky syntax. It made complex scripts easy a cake to write. I know some websites still use it for CGI scripting
Should I pick it back up again?

perl6 is not perl5.
Also last time I chckeded (1 year ago) perl6 was pretty slow and has all this OOP nonsense to it which you don't really need.
perl5 is a great language for processing text. Very good for system automation.
>should I use it?
Depends on your use case.

for yourself? sure, it's great for fairly small scripts that won't need much maintenance
for work? no

It would be just as a hobby. I was thinking of scripting a website with it. Could be cool to try and get a simple game running with it too. It could probably handle a text-based game like the old MUDs pretty well. I just enjoyed the language but never sat down and tried to seriously learn it to any sort of advanced level.

I say go for it

It's powerful. It's sensible. It's maintained. Unfortunately, if you want to work on a project that someone else crates, or want to get devs to help you in your project, you're going to be sol.

wtf I love Bender now

If it passedperlcritic -2it's easier to maintain than most SL.

it is good for personal work but a it becomes a nightmare when you coloaborate with others
