Why are you not using Maxima? Serious question. I've seen Matlab mentioned a lot but not Maxima, isn't Maxima a more complete CAS than Matlab?
The learning curve is easy and even the graphics are astounding, this program needs more love.
have you ever looked at the matlab modules? simulink, signal processing, wireless communication, optimization toolboxes, control systems, computer vision, machine learning are just to name a few

Matlab is more for engineers. If wanted to do what maxima could do I'll use python.
is maxima FOSS?
same reason im not using maple or mathematica
>>60292958
At that point just use SageMath
>>60294176
Yes, you can use it within emacs too

>talking about CAS

nice try

Maxima is built from Lisp as Emacs is
Why not octave though?
Matlab is not a CAS, it's more similar to Mathematica
Jupyter is far superior though
>>60294973
This. Matlab is not even a CAS
>>60294955
Fine for me

There is no corporate body which comes to Uni's to shill Emacs and cuck you with shitty "new features of 2017a, plz buy" presentations via free pizza.
By the time you have a job MATLAB is "the program you know" and was marketed as such to companies (across all disciplines). It's a smart strategy really, even though I hate the reliance on it. Plus their licensing model is confusing af

>GPL
nope.

I have used wxMaxima for a long time. It's meant more as a learning tool (what _I_ used it for personally) and not for doing serious work.
it's lacking in other areas apart from plots, symbolic differentiation/integration, etcetc
also matlab has Simulink which is really good.
