New Explorer.exe landed on the Creator's Update, fellas

explorer shell:AppsFolder\c5e2524a-ea46-4f67-841f-6a9465d9d515_cw5n1h2txyewy!App

paste that shit into a new shortcut

the thing looks decent, although pretty barebones

it's a desktop shortcut to open whatever you want
>>
>>60273073
>go into properties on "This PC"

The properties pane is weird as fuck as well. It's treated as a level in navigation so you need to use the Up arrow or the breadcrumbs to get out of it.
>>
>>60273253
same here
it crashed on me two times already
I think the application is missing the back arrow that appears on the windows frame
>>
>>60273303
I realized why it hangs when you go into properties on "This PC".
It's because it is trying to index all the drives in that "directory" for space, number of files and folders.

It should be noted that if you go into the properties of This PC in the existing explorer it just opens the System Information and if you open the properties of drives it doesn't try to index the entire things but just gives you total storage overview.

Basically, I blame whatever group of women they have working on this.
>>
>>60273303
Who the fuck needs a "back" button? What is this, Windows 95? That's the OS that introduced that grandpa, it's time to let it go and embrace the future XD

Thank god they got rid of those pesky file extensions too, what dinosaurs! Now I can finally send people Rihanna_Kiss_It_Better.exe again and set the default Windows 10 music file as the program icon! Woohoo!

>>60274418
That's because of the design of NT kernel.

NT kernel has a concept of environmental subsystems running in userspace that translate API calls (Win32, POSIX, OS/2, ...) into internal kernel calls. It was implemented to give Windows NT an edge in interoperability with other systems, but since they quickly acquired almost total market dominance, the facility is generally underused.

So yeah, it's a Windows subsystem and it's there to run Linux: Windows subsystem for Linux.

That is a Windows 95 style folder icon. Not even 98, they refreshed the folder icon design 2 years later.

So we are looking at a folder that has been there for 22 years! Older than many posters here (unfortunately)....

Yep. Things still lookin preetty decent here, boys.

The key is to NOT be a retarded Windows user. Rule[s] of thumb for not hating your Win10:
>Download the Release Candidate (if you want to have the general gui improvements all Win OS updates include)

windows with custom theme can look good
>>
>>60276808
I will never understand this. Why not use Windows 7 instead at that point?

A lot of people hate on the ribbon, but from my perspective it's more useful than the old explorer will ever be. It doesn't require me to open a separate settings window and go look for an option in a list just so I can either show or hide files, and it allows things like opening a command prompt on a specific folder, something that file managers other OSes have had for ages. The old explorer only makes it easier for custom themes, but if you wanted more functionality you would have to add it through fucking with the registry.

To me "it's ugly" is barely a fucking argument.

>From my perspective X
>To me Y
There's your problem, you're close-minded.
Whatever fits you may not fit the person in front of you.

For example, I like a explorer that's both simplistic in appearence and useful at the same time.
I'm an average user that only uses the Explorer to.. well, explore from X to Y Folder.
I don't need a fancy thing like the ribbon bar nor a lot of shortcuts and options that I'll likely never use. As long as there's a direction bar, 3 buttons (Back, Next, Up) and a quick access menu at the left side, that'll be more than enough (and I admit that I'm starting to dig in the idea of having Tabs thanks to the picture up there).

That aside though, doesn't Shift+Right Click allow you to open a CMD in a specific location?
I only used that once I think, so I may be confusing with some 3rd party app.

This is never going to happen. Windows whole reason for its market share is 100% down to Win32 backwards compatibility. Microsoft is crazy about backwards compatibility in a way that nobody else is, and that's why they remain the market leader. Also, almost nobody is making UWP apps.

As if that would change anything, lol. Lots of people whined about forced updates that can literally brick your rig - so what's the outcome?

>>60286941
Around 2020 Intel is planning to introduce a new x86 architecture that won't be 100% backward compatible anyway. So it'd be the perfect moment for MS to completely ditch Win32. Software companies would be forced to rewrite their shit for UWP or lose their shekels. And no, MS is long ago not crazy about backwards compatibility - they're just crazy.

You must be truly naive or a complete imbecile to think such a thing.

With that move, Microsoft would kill the big majority of its userbase. You'd have an amount of people jumping to Linux/Mac, another amount living on Windows 7/8.1/Outdated 10, just a small fraction who'd try to get used to UWP (I honestly don't think there's anybody willing to even try though, to be quite honest) and equally EVERYONE would complain across the internet about it.
