I've just bought a new desktop from a garage sale, runs fairly fast for it's age, runs on x36 Vista. What kinds of programs does /g/ recommend? I've already decided on Palemoon and a few other things, just need some suggestions.
BSD or Linux work wonders on older hardware.

Install Gentoo.

This. You might as well wipe it and install a Linux distro. I did exactly that with my old laptop because Vista is a pile of shit.
try Arch Linux, it's a wonderfull learning experience. It provides everything you need for any software you desire, and if you don't want to learn how to install an OS manually you can use "Antegros" "Manjaro" for cookie-cutter Arch flavors with friendly installer.
In terms of an OS I'm thinking either Ubuntu GNOME or Arch Linux. The Vista on here right now is shite and can't run half the stuff I want it to.
I might even dual boot the Ubuntu and Linux just to see which I like the best.
