CPUs:
>G4560 for budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500X will keep above 60fps in every game. No i5
>R5 1600 is the best value for higher fps gaming and mixed usage, 1600x if you don't want to OC
>i7-7700k for high 144hz framerate but heats a lot.
>R7/Xeon for compute/multitask/mixed use. R5 if budget

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for LoL, dota2, rocket league, etc
>1050Ti - if on sale for ~$105. RX560 soon & looks good
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60-80hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60-75hz, inject SMAA and drop settings for some games
>1060 - Gets outperformed by the RX 580, consider only if AMD is not an option (CUDA, Linux)
>1070 - 1080p@144hz/1440p@60hz, poor value but performs well
>1080 - 1440@110hz. 120+FPS or 4k@60 by lowering a few settings
>1080Ti - 1440p@144hz/4k@60
>Freesync2 & Vega soon.

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS on a retailer page to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable.
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX is often cheaper as the board+case is usually less
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs
>A good air cooler is generaly wiser than an AIO
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RV3sf8

Rate my build. I'm also torn on the CPU Cooler since I'd like to get a good cooler that doesn't require having to wait for AM4 brackets to come in the mail and work out of box.

I am aware it comes with a cooler of it's own but I plan to OC it as high as possible while keeping cool temps

Looking for more input since the thread died early.
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gvZFhq

Should do the 470 or find a comparable 570 or wait for the 560s to roll out later this month?
>>
>>60268017
Le Grand Macho comes with AM4 bracket if it states it does.

>>60268058
Depends on game. For some games, you'll get CPU bottlenecked heavily and the RX560 is a better match. For others, the G4560 with the RX470 or RX570 is fine.

the 7700k does not come with a stock cooler
>>
>>60267984
Which CPU cooler is better? Cooler Master Hyper 212X or Cryorig H7?
>>
>>60268272
The H7 is quite noticeably better, which is pretty understandable because it cost more
>>
>>60268267
i know but he bought literally a $6 AUD cooler and its exactly like the stock cooler that intel has

Yes. Announcement in 9 days.

>>60268272
Why didn't you google for a review? It would be clear.
>>
>>60268327
You guys fuckin say reviews are terrible, and listen to actual bench scores, now you say listen to reviews and ignore what real people say.
>>
>>60268305
And he has the 7700k?
Without having touched the frequency?
The same CPU that has 90c temperature spikes even on high end aio / air coolers?
http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/gamers-report-core-i7-7700-temperature-spikes.html

Please don't do that. Just pay for a $25 cooler at least. You're ready to spend $1000+ for a pc build, $25 is nothing.

>>60268332
/pcbg/ is populated with different people of different opinions.
Cooler review are usually pretty straight forward: just sticks to the number (temperature).
>>
>>60268058
This is pretty much the build I was looking at. Would it be adequate for WoW and Minecraft?

Also, what would be an appropriate monitor for a lower end build like that?

Not for cooler reviews. It's harder to be bias with them.

They run the same program to put CPU at 100% load. Hopefully they keep the microphone at the same space each time and apply the same thermal paste... but yeah.

>>60268440
If you can turn settings down, and 60fps is enough, then quite a while.

I ran out of SATA power connectors. PSU only came with 6 and I'm not spending $100+ dollars on an 850w PSU so I can get 8. Besides, it's only powering an SSD which uses like 2w under load. It'll be fine.
>>
>>60268725
You can just buy a sata power extension for like $5 on amazon. Plug in one end of a sata power from the psu and you get 4 more. I would not recommend adding more though since that would seem like a fire hazard, but molex to sata is a bigger risk than an extension.

Like pic related? Wouldn't that split the voltage/amperage being delivered to the hard drive(s)? And what's so bad about molex? If molex is so terrible, why is it still the standard for water pumps, fan controllers, and even as auxiliary power for high end boards?
>>
>>60268400
It should run most modern games at around 1080p.

I have no idea on minecraft though because that can be a bit of a resource hog sometimes.

It's kinda why I was asking if I should swap over to the rx570/wait for the rx560 to roll out.

Depends on how well it's pirated.

Dunno on that one.

>How safe is Kinguin?

Pretty safe iirc.

Indeed.
>>
>>60268834
overkill, drop that to a GTX 1070
>>
>>60268774
Molex itself isn't bad. Molex to sata adapters just have a habit of catching a terrible case of being on fire. I was thinking more along the lines of this: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Power-Splitter-Adapter-PYO4SATA/dp/B0086OGN9E/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1494202159&sr=8-9&keywords=sata+extension which is a splitter too, but power consumption should be fine as long as you have a decent PSU with good wattage.

Despite a lot of non-answers and lack of info in your post, the fact that you said that Kinguin is pretty safe is helpful at least. Thanks.

What's a generally fine voltage for a 6700K on an overclock of 4.8GHZ?
>>
>>60268892
alright i'll bite. im planning on upgrading to a ryzen 1800x.

whats the best micro atx motherboard for this CPU? also do you have any recommendations on a CPU cooler. Was thinking of getting the cryorig H7 since it's not quite as tall as other cpu air coolers and i have limited space.

any RAM suggestions would be nice too but i think i know which RAM i want to get.
>>
>>60268639
Yep. Still using 7970 on my 1600X build. Such a good card.
Waiting for a GPU that can do 4K at 60fps minimum and HDR10 monitor before I upgrade. The 1080Ti falls short.

There's a free edition of windows 10 available from microsoft, it's unactivated so you have a watermark on the bottom right corner after installing it, but I think you can use it for as long as you want without activating it.

I've never used kinguin before so I don't know what their customer support is like.

If you're a college student, and an engineer or in computer science, you can see if your uni has an agreement with MS and get yourself free software like Windows 10/8.1/7 pro editions. Check out onthehub to see if you get a school discount.

Is the 1700 really better than the 7700k? Will I feel buyers remorse by end of year when we find out that Intel is beating AMD?
>>
>>60268688
Get a 75hz freesync, too. They're cheap. That G4560 is going to dip sometimes for some games. Having 40 minimum hz will help make it less of a problem.

>>60268954
It's better for streaming, multitasking, and when you're GPU bottlenecked like in 1440p and 4k since its minimums are better.
>>
>>60268952
>I think you can use it for as long as you want without activating it
It doesn't allow you to personalize your wallpaper and stuff though, which I would prefer to do.

Asus makes good quality products but they have terrible customer service if you ever do get a faulty one.

EVGA has beautiful customer support since they used to have a lot of failures in the past, but they worked to fix their errors.

Zotac is breddy gud.

MSI is gimmicky but not as gaudy as Asus ROG or whatever using LEDs.

I would try out zotac.

Considering a EVGA FTW2 since the revised ICX version is only $410 w/rebate on Newegg right now and people generally hold EVGA's support in good regard. It's not that much more than most 1070's currently outside of the Gigabyte and mini 1070's.
>>
>>60269077
nvidia generally tends to work better from what i heard
you can always remove that in the next thread if you disagree with the op
>>
>>60269080
It's my first PC so I don't have access to another GPU. But I'm honestly considering doing that just to solve the problem. I've pretty much reinstalled Windows, my drivers, verified integrity of games, fiddled with power settings, underclocked, overvolted my card, etc. I even get error 4101 display driver crashes on the desktop, so it's not just an issue with games. Just trying everything before I submit a RMA ticket and demand a refund for the card or something.
>>
>>60269104
You can try buying off of amazon, particularly for "used - like new" from the warehouse which means unused and not defective but maybe has a scratch or something.
>>
>>60269126
you could just buy some cheap used card with similar power consumption off ebay. random crashes on desktop under low load do make me suspect the gpu rather than the psu
>>
>>60269129
>>60269174
Thanks for the advice, it's odd because the GPU worked fine for 4 or 5 weeks and then suddenly started having issues in games, then on desktop as well. I went crazy trying to diagnose it, but I was wondering if the PSU might be to blame but it doesn't make sense with the desktop issues. I never had any power loss or hard system crashes either, just display driver issues and a VIDEO TDR BSOD.
>>
>>60269045
I don't see the point of this post.
>>60269099
Never heard of microsoft toolkit, what does it do?
>>
>>60268926
As always, the most important factor when answering any question is "what do you plan to do with your PC?"

That will help me a lot with that. But I've seen good things about the ASRock micro-atx boards. (2 m2 slots for one)

CPU cooler depends on case.

RAM doesn't really matter a lot unless you're gonna overclock. It's not really a bottleneck these days, and most all of them have the same CAS latencies.

>>60268954
What do you want to do with your build?

>>60268913
1.4/1.45 but you're gonna need a beastly cooler.
>>
>>60269012
>you can't beat a cpu by having 2x less cores, no matter how high they are clocked
That's not true. The 7700k was better than the FX 8 cores in 95% of cases.
But that's because its cores were almost half as powerful.

thanks,

I was actually considering the ASrock mATX boards. specifically the AB350M Pro4.

I plan on using the pc as my daily driver but i also play video games on the weekend and i want some decent framerates so i am upgrading. Deciding to go with ryzen over the intel since it will have better temps, multitasking, and power usage. i also dont really ever plan on using two gfx cards at once. so im sticking with my mATX case. mATX is about as big of a case as i really want to go.

this is the RAM i am planning on getting by the way: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0143UM4TC/ref=twister_B01M33CGCY?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

my main concern with motherboards and ryzen is that i know compatibility with certain speeds is kinda iffy right now.

What the hell do you guys do with spare parts? I have pic related. 4 radiators of varying sizes, fpi, and thickness, 3 water pumps and 3 reservoirs. A dozen or so Barbs, worm clamps, and misc fittings. A bunch of gigabit pcie cards, SATA pcie and raid cards, USB 3.1/C expansion cards, fan filters, and like 4 different fan controllers. One of which is rated at 150w per channel offering 4 channels. Lastly I have around 60 feet of various colored tubing from primochill and 3 silver kill coils.

If it's not clear, I used to liquid cool. Had a very large loop. Said loop used to be around 14 fans.

SLI is fucking useless, unless you love microstutter and inconsistent, shitty frametimings that you'd normally only get with 8 year old pentiums.
But, yeah, it'll get you 144+ avg FPS at 1440p with maxed out games. The smarter decision would be to get 1 card and tweak settings for the games you're playing (eg turning down/off anti aliasing, tweaking a few things in the driver settings). There will be no visible difference, and you'll be getting much better performance (in the scale of 110-150%).

>>
>>60270242
Yeah, benchmarks are great for giving relative performance between components, because any reputable reviewer will run the games with the same settings and the same scenes, giving good relative performance. But, oftentimes, those settings are really shitty defaults that have huge performance impacts for no visual gain.

Think STALKER: Call of Pripyat, where god rays at high would literally cut the FPS in half for literally 0 difference. Not just human perceptible difference, 2 screenshots of high and low would show no diff using image delta programs.

Oftentimes, benchmarks on youtube have those kind of settings maxed out. Just tweak the games you like and you'll find performance is actually much better than benchmarks say.

Priorities with this build:
light gaming
heavy and reliable data recording (hence ECC RAM/helium HGST drives)
custom case for low noise and aesthetics
(mostly) passive cooling

I'll hopefully be using a passively cooled RX 560, and a heatsink stripped of its fan (for better airflow from the 200mm) for the CPU. I posted this build a few threads ago, but have refined it since then based on comments here and also additional research. I'm unfortunately poor as shit, so I'm going to be saving up for this build for the rest of 2017, maybe past Christmas this year.

If APUs that match or beat the RX 460 come out with ECC support, I'll spring for that alone instead of Ryzen + RX 560. I'll be dual-booting Linux and Windows using the m.2 drive, and the 2 He-8 drives will be running in mirrored ZFS for maximum data reliability.

Pic related, it's the next revision of the case design.

Yes, the 1070 would most likely be a better choice for you, seeing you haven't mentionned any resolution or refresh rate. It's already way overkill for 1080p60hz.

Quick question, was the R7 260x good when it came out?
>>
>>60270627
Yes, I am, but I'm patient as fuck. I'll save every paycheck to get the highest quality product. If I were worried about price, I'd go for Seagate drives and a standard case. The 1800x is a better fit for my needs, so until something better suited comes out I'm aiming for that.

In fact the cheapest option would probably be buying a surplus'd rack mounted computer off eBay and slapping a GPU into it, but that doesn't fit my needs (weight, power consumption).

i5s are shit, especially the 7600k which is a very poor choice. For the same price of a 7600k you can have a 6 cores 12 threads Ryzen CPU, which has higher framerate, much lower CPU usage (the i5 reaches 90+% in any AAA game form the past 3 years), and doesn't need a cooler.

>1600x
Probably a bad idea; the 1600 overclocks easier and comes with a *great* stock cooler, making it a better option for the price. As for AMD GPUs, if you're going to be saving up for it, wait for Vega. If you want one now, the RX 580 is a great option. Go for an R9 Fury/Fury X if you want the absolute best performance bar none in an AMD GPU; it trades blows with the 1070 pretty easily in most games. It's outdated by now, though, with less support from AMD as far as driver updates goes, so I'd recommend the RX 580 over it.
>>
>>60270793
Your CPU will be more than enough in non-CPU intensive games, and you're going to need to buy a new MOBO and RAM to upgrade your CPU. Stick with buying a new GPU if you're only going to be playing at 1080p, you might need a new CPU for 1440p though.
>>
>>60270792
>>60270796
I've read that the 1600 doesn't guarantee overclocking vs the 1600x, so I thought it'd be worth the extra? and a rx580 probably isn't much better than my r9 290

There is no instabilities with Ryzen in W7. CPUs aren't like GPUs, they have quite strict norms that makes pretty much any of them work the same way for the OS
It's not like when you create an account it's going to use a specific part of the CPU, nah. Just basic instructions supported by any CPU.
The problem that you would face when installing W7 Ryzen would be:
-No drivers for mouse & kb, unless you manage to include them on the USB installer you have
-Windows blocked updates for Kaby Lake & Ryzen CPUs, so you'd have to download the workaround that bypasses that online, it's pretty simple
-No Master Ryzen to oc with the OS running ;_;

I require a CPU akin to the latest line of consumer grade CPU (AKA i5, i7, etc) with one very specific caveat:

It requires a very large l3 cache. I'm talking as much as possible. 50 MB? Great, but 128 would be 10x better.

There is a very specific program that has over 100 MB worth in cache misses for ALL it's calculations and thus my only recourse for absolute best performance is to buy the Intel Xeon with 60 MB CPU for god damn 7+ grand or just settle for a motherboard with as fast as possible FSB Bus speed + latest DDR4 RAM (4233)

Inb4 lol that ram is overkill and won't help: CAS latency on DDR4 is fastest available on the market. Even if if it says the CAS is 19 across the board it's rounded number, each iteration increases it by nanoseconds and thus it makes the difference in this situaton.

The problem is there are no commercial desktop CPU with massive or at the very fuckin least over 15 MB CPU cache.

So you're not actually getting the HDD because of it's feature? Western Black are generally aimed at entreprises, the price per GB is higher than regular HDD
You'd get more speed by going with two $50 Western Caviar Blue and it would cost cheaper

Open up a clock manager for your GPU like EVGA precision.

Does anyone know at what point the Ryzen CPUs use XFR/boost mode?

My 1700x reached about 70-80% usage yesterday, but still didn't clock higher than 3,5ghz at any point even though you might think that it would when seeing usage that high. I was under the impression that it overclocks automatically and that there is no need to OC unless I want to jack off benchmark scores.

I don't need to enable XFR somehow, right? Or is it possible that I somehow turned it off at some point by accident?

Before anyone asks, yes I've got a more than adequate cooler for it.

Been concerned whether or not the r7 1700 is what it's worth. It's nice to have the extra cores I can utilize, I'm concerned with gaming, whether or not it will last me. Rather, I could get a 7700k to last, 8 cores may be enough:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sRGtd6

Is the 1700 worth the investment? I can assure I'll utilize the numerous cores for rendering, but will gaming lack in the future?
>>
>>60273586
>but will gaming lack in the future?
It won't, there is no other way to increase performance, hence why Intel also will release 6 cores for mainstream CPUs before the end of the year
Games requires more and more ressources each year, and considering the IPC & frequency improvements are pretty minimal each year, there is nowhere to turn to than optimising towards the most threads possible.

That's why GTA V ran so well on last gen consoles, current gen consoles and PC: it actually made use of all the available cores. It uses all 16 threads for my R7 1700. The game came out 2 years ago on PC, and 4 year ago on xbox / ps3 (and note that the ps3 has what you could consider 8 cores)
If any company wants to make a game as CPU heavy as GTA V, they have no choice but to optimize for 8+ threads otherwise the game will run pretty shit

>>60273708
>what's your opinion so far?
I love it, being able to have anything i want open at the same time feels fucking great, and so does not having to ever close anything when starting cpu-heavy programs
I do video editing, encoding, some streaming, recording, audio editing, photo editing, drawing and gaming, so naturally having all those cores is very enjoyable to me. But also because i can keep adobe animate, premiere pro & after effect open in the background while gaming and there is absolutely 0 drop in performance, so i can quickly get back to what i do when i want to do a pause or when i stop playing.

So far i haven't ever reached 100% usage doing multitaskign (though i did reach it by doing multiple video encodings at the same time), but the CPU usages i usually reach while doing multitasking - gaming are very often so high that even a 7700k would've shat itself long ago. Really glad i waited a few months to get this CPU instead of an i7
>>
>>60273833
continuation because "connection error" if the message is too long (wtf???)
>do you use the stock cooler and did you overclock?
I do use stock cooler and i do overclock, but the clock is dependent on the load because otherwise i'd overheat. At base i'm at 3.3GHz because it's a 100% safe temp under any situation, even for prolonged 100% load with case fans spinning to a minimum
When doing CPU-heavy stuff, i'm at 3.7GHz. I can't sustain that 3.7 for very long if i'm at 100% load though, otherwise it gets very hot. But the only times i'm at 100% are when i do multiple video encodings at the same time.
When doing CPU heavy stuff on few cores (Wii u emulation, one big load on one thread and a small load on three others), i up that to 3.9GHz because the temperatures are still fairly low (55°C) and the performance increase is needed (as wii u emulation is very unoptimized right now)

Wouldn't recommend sticking to stock cooler for overclocking.

>>60268400
I saw some benchmarks that were pretty much the same in terms of results and all of them stated that 570 is about 7-12% faster than 470. If you can find 570 for 20$ or so more, take it otherwise its not much of a differnce. It will run everything on 1080@60fps but expect to turn down settings on some games

Interesting way to utilize the clock speeds then, I'll have to keep that in mind switching between games, scripting, etc. Might I ask how you switch the clock speeds easily? I assume a reboot with the bios, I've never overclocked myself.

That's how OCs are usually done, and that's how i applied the 3.3GHz, but having to reboot everytime i want to increase or decrease clock would be annoying. I use the Ryzen Master tool to change cpu frequency with the os still running
You just have to specify frequency, maybe increase cpu voltage, and just click apply

In the OP it says

>A air cooler is generally wiser than an aio cooler

How true is this?

I can't find any decent looking and good performance fan, why do all fans look so big and bulky. Any smaller fans that have similar performance.

And anyway is air really better than an aio?
>>
>>60274345
AIO is better but even the high end 240mm ones are only 3 - 4°C cooler than high end air cooler, for twice the price, much more risk (leakage, pump failing) and much more maintenance

An AIO is objectively better at cooling than air cooling, but the downsides are so bad that it's often wiser to get an air cooler

>why do all fans look so big and bulky
Because the bigger the better. Bigger fans can blow much more air, and bigger heatsink have much more surface to spread the heat

Yeah the 1080Ti can't even do 120fps minimum at 1080p in a lot of games with it as the bottleneck.

Crossfire fixed their microstutter problem, but I still wouldn't recommend it, too.

When your build is so overpriced that you can throw in a great $480 monitor to the other build and the other is still cheaper, your build is shit.

But you say you got it for a handjob, so maybe you should have listed that instead of wasting other's time.

Not when you include Gsync cost, no.
If you already have a 1440p 60hz monitor that's not Gsync, though, that's fine since you'll generally stay over 60fps.
If you have a 1080p 60hz monitor, that's just retarded to get a 1070 when a 4GB RX570 will keep you over 60fps on vh/maxed in all but like 2 or 3 games.

My experience with CAD is that just a midrange GTX card was all the CUDA you needed. Like a 1060.
But Nvidia was making efforts to get GTX cards blocked off from use with those because you're "supposed to" use Quaddro instead even though they cost 4-6x more for the same performance.

There is no such thing as a Titan GTX 1080. Your "friend" is lying to you.

End of spring if we're lucky.

>f I want to overclock in the future, can I apply the method shown in this video to install my own heatsinks and remedy the problem?
>thermal tape on heatsinks
Yep. It works well. You can get a pack of them for like $4-$7.

You can also use a down-blower cooler and that'll also be fine.

GTA actually doesn't use more than 8 threads well.
Yeah it uses all 16, but not at very high load. And it's still quite reliant on a main render loop.
For when it came out, yeah it was threaded well.
But the past 3 years is when it's truly become common for games to fairly evenly distribute among even 12 or 16 threads.

Fugg... a lot of people say that, but then I go and look at bench marks and they make a bretty obvious difference. And from my own experience Quadro systems do a great job, but I don't know if its the Quadro actually making the difference because they are high end systems and I've never used one with a GTX. Researching this just makes me wanna die. Why couldn't I just be an uninformed consumer?

For gaming using the iGPU?
The 7600 is barely better. But it's hotter, higher power usage, and the productivity usage will be significantly worse.
You should try to get the A12-9800. It's actually kinda of amazing in a meme-yet-still-pretty-good way. It has double the gaming performance of the G4560.

Plus you can upgrade from the A12-9800 to Ryzen.

I bought a TN over an IPS. IPS is a meme if you're gaming.

However I was in the 1440 res, 144hz, 27" market. Mine does Freesync and is 1ms. The best comparable IPS monitor was 2, I wanted absolute lowest frametimes. If you get a GOOD TN, it really doesn't matter unless you're doing graphics work. I love love love my monitor, it's super smooth. Freesync is good but mine sometimes glitches out, that's probably a hardware bug on my end not universal to freesync
, but when it's working it's pretty cash.

1800X and K7 owner here, mine has been rock solid once Gigabyte got BIOS updates that were actually ready.

RAM may be touchy, CHECK THE QVL. I ran Corsair 3200 Vengeance that all the reviewers had and couldn't get it above 2400. Returned it and got the G.Skill FlareX "designed for ayymd" stuff and popped it in, threw it on XMP and it just werked with no other changes. That was on an older BIOS, F2b or something I believe for the K7. I'm on F3 now and have manually set the timings instead and it's running at 3200 beautifully. No crashes, hangs, nothing. Super quick.

I'm going to overclock this CPU soon. If I can get 4.0 on near-stock voltages, I'll be pretty happy.

Building a pc for light 1080p gaming of the newest titles and office work; with a bit of headroom if I want to overlock/upgrade in the future.
I'd like some recommendations to improve the build if I'm sticking to 1600 +470.
Specifically, I'm not sure if I should go for the gaming pro instead of the mortar; and not sure if the case is ideal since this will be my first time assembling a pc.

I'd get a semi-modular PSU at least, and MSI UEFI and some other shit has been meeehhh especially on Linux, but looks like a pretty ideal build otherwise.
