Work part time or on weekends if you can. Or work for money at your school instead of vouchers. If they offer summer jobs it's basically you sitting at a desk and living in the dorms for free and you get paid near min wage I would think.

> Linux fucks up the hard drive

This is intended behavior to get you off windows
>>
>>60267869
The error occurred in the middle of the formating process, so it didn't even install the system.

Why not run GNU/Linux in a VM? Also,

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Suck it up. Quit being a wussy.
>>
>>60267941
Nah, the same error occurred when I tried the most nobrainer option "erase everything and install".

>>60268005
VMs suck, I want to run it on the bare metal.

>>60268031
Only the system will be on it, its just a cheap solution until I have money for a SSD.
>>
>>60267941
more like don't even run a partitioner without a backup

>not buying second hand hard drives
>hating on cheap as air storage
in my current build I have only one HDD (out of four) that I bought new. the rest I bought used and they had less power on hours/cycles than my bought-as-new drive, so if any of them is going to fail, it's most likely going to be the one bought as new
>>
>>60268250
this, I only buy server grade used hdds now.
they are tested to work and if they didn't fail already chances are they are going to keep on spinning for years..
>>
>>60267709
You should try to recover data from hdd
>>
>>60267709
Can't you just use a USB3 drive?
>>
>>60268250
HDDs often fail in the first six months after they were new. Theres nothing wrong with buying them used, just be sure you backup everything.
>>
>>60268278
So you buy SAS drives and controllers?

That's a little much for just a home use scenario.
>>
>Friend hears about Linux
>Installs it
>Doesn't like it
>Removes it along with GRUB
>Calls me because they "broke" their computer since they removed the bootloader

Happens a couple of times a year.
>>
>>60267727
So do i, yet I manage to do my job and balance it with class. Learn to manage your life.
>>
>>60267709
>because last time I tried to install on my main HD an error occurred while formating that erased my other partitions with all my data
no it didn't, that's now how partition editing works. YOU fucked up and no one else but you can hold responsibility. These things dont just magically fail like some visualbasic windows program.

That being said, having a second drive and even unplugging your main one is right idea for you, at least then you limit the damage your ignorance can create.
>>
>>60268005
Shut the fuck up. I wish the mods would issue a permaban whenever some faggot pushes out this copypasta.
>>
>>60267709
That was the best deal you could find? I can find 250GBs reasonably quickly on CL, or at recycled computer equipment stores in my neck of the woods.

Besides OP, that shit is going to be super slow. the 80GB drives were prime tech sometime around what, 2003-2004? That shit will have r/w speeds of around 10 MB/s, possibly 20 if you're lucky.
