IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

New to /tpg/ or looking for purchasing advice? (hint: use the advice request template, it makes life easier)
https://pastebin.com/nBqTEbHn

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).

Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

For freefags who don't mind a slower PC and need LibreBoot:
T400 - 14", normal size
X200 - 12.5", ultraportable

For normal users who like the classic keyboard:
T420 - 14", normal size (supports CoreBoot)
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable (supports CoreBoot)

For users who want to hardmod and get objectively better specs (and want to keep the classic keyboard):
T430 - 14", normal size
X230 - 12.5", ultraportable (supports CoreBoot)

For users who want the best specs, like the modern style, and want the best specs:
(The touchpad is replacable on all of these with a hardmod)
T440 - 14", normal size, ULV (worse processor, much better battery life!)
T440p - 14", normal size
X240 - 12.5", ultraportable, ULV (worse processor, much better battery life!)

First for T420 keyboards
>>
Asking again since it got lost in last thread. T430: Nvidia GPU or not? The Nvidia models seem to be at a premium price
>>
>>60263367
I do not plan on doing any eGPU things also
>>
>>60263367
They're barely 30% better than integrated and run far more power. Highly advise against it.
>>
>>60263442
Alright, going to pass on that then. Paying up to $100 more for just a slight increase over integrated is not something I want to do.
>>
new thinkpads aren't bad beyond the keyboard and price

>>
What screen should I get to replace the shitty stock 1366x768 screen on my T420?
>>
>>60263507
I agree, but with how cheap older models are to buy broken and refurbish yourself, it just isn't worth it.
>>
>>60263535
The Alienware TN for sure. 1600x900 but with how good the viewing angles are you'd think they're IPS.

Thank you.
Dells are more reliable to accept different GPUs, they benefit from having Alienware under their facilities and can use GPUs originated from alienwares
HPs on the other hand, are somewhat limited, but can still be used.
I think both do require BIOS flashing, but it's not like you need a Pi for most of them.

It's somewhat purposeless on its own. Nothing exactly wrong with it, but it can't be Librebooted like the X200, nor is it as powerful as the X220. It does fill some smaller niches, though. It's the last 16:10 Thinkpad in the X series and the last to use the older keyboard style before the slight changes made to it in the other --10 models. If you're up for modding, you can swap in an AFFS panel or the X200s/X201s 1440x900 panel.

Should note that the W520's 1080p TN panel is one of the very best ever made. The W530's is good too, though it's a bit inferior to the 20's because Lelnovo. They're better than even the 1080p IPS panels that would later be offered on the --40 models. It's really only the 420/430 models that have such atrocious screens.

So someone who has an x201 should sell it and buy either x200 or x220? Is that the consensus?

Also, the x201 isn't listed here https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/pl/en/product_security/ps500104 (even though it is affected due to having ME 6.x), does that mean that Lenovo is "leaving it for dead" and not releasing a firmware update fixing the ME/AMT vulnerability discovered lately?

Yes, though you can disable it or neuter it entirely with an SPI flash.

the x220/x230 are lower quality ips screens tho.
>>

I'd say they're passable. Not on par with the W series, but acceptable for a 12" laptop screen. The T420 and T430 screens are real bottom of the barrel shit.

they only get a pass because of how awful their tn screens were.

Is there any way I could customize the keyboard on my T420 and do a half-decent job at it? I just got my T530 up and working. Love it so far, I really feel the difference from my old laptop.

me_cleaner is an experimental effort. Even it's author says that it is unknown how much the procedure actually accomplishes, as it is unknown what capabilities are actually hardwired directly into the ME circuitry. Secondly, there may be some adverse side effects to erasing portions of the ME firmware from SPI flash. Thirdly, the procedure is not trivial and prone to risk of bricking the board if anything goes wrong. So, it's certainly nowhere a "just do is and you're set, problem solved" kind of solution.
>>
>>60268935
>Yes
You mean by that, that the x201 will not be patched, and will end up being the only model that will remain vulnerable (x200 is uneffected as it has ME 4.x, and x220 will receive an ME firmware update)? Why would Lenovo screw over x201 owners like that?
>>
>>60269260
It's enough to remove the exploit at the very least. The other bits are only relevant to freefags.
>>
>>60269292

you did make a backup didn't you anon?

I have flashed my x220 about 30 times now messing with coreboot and have reflashed back to
lenovo's bios about 3 or 4 times.

I'm the guy with the flashed and heavily modded T430. I'm working on an overclock guide which will have flash instructions as well. It's nearly identical to the T60p flash. Look at the libreboot wiki and it gets you 95% of the way there. Pin out is the same.
>>
>>60269551
yeah, my advice is to get a good clip (ponoma) even if they are about $20 on amazon
I flashed because I didn't trust my modified bios I was using
I did lose a bunch of advanced config options in the bios because the modified lenovo bios I had included the advanced menu
but I gained a bunch of support for non-standard configurations and was able to gimp the ME
if you have a i7 x220 I don't think the USB 3.0 port works (unconfirmed)

also it was just fun to do.

>>60269604
buy a SPI flasher or a device that has SPI capability
Buy a ponoma SOIC-8 Clip from amazon
You will need to read your original rom from the device to extract some binary blobs such as the VBIOS/ME Firmware (you can clean it later) and the GBE Firmware
inside the menuconfig for coreboot you add all your binary blobs to the config and build it
OPTIONAL: I build SeaBIOS seperatly from coreboot and add it as a payload after so I can customize it and test different versions

flashrom -r my_original_rom.bin -p linux_spi:dev=/dev/spidev0.0 <- back up your rom
flashrom -w coreboot.rom -p linux_spi:dev=/dev/spidev0.0 <- write your new coreboot rom

Still looks risky af. What if a part of the contraption randomly slips just a bit for whatever reason? Hosed flash = bricked board. And the author of me_cleaner says himself

https://github.com/corna/me_cleaner/wiki/How-does-it-work%3F
>>
>>60269767
macronix chips are a pain in the ass to flash since its a bga not a SOIC8/16 package
try resetting BUCTS flag to see if you can flash it through software instead
>>
>>60269795
>Be prepared for a brick
i.e this shit could break so be prepared to reflash it
you would have to have some really big balls to try to flash the bios from the system management interface
in fact I don't think you can flash coreboot or even touch the ME firmware region without using a ISP
>>
>>60269795
A brick or incomplete flash is repaired with a reflash. How could you possibly brick an eeprom with a bad write? It won't fry it, it just won't boot. Brick just means the firmware on the chip won't function. Flashrom also verifies writes by dumping after it competes and comparing.
>>
>>60269309
>They don't think it's worth the effort for a device that old
There's still plenty of x201 machines in use, even by business/enterprise customers, and considering the severity of this vulnerability, it would be a huge dick move on Lenovo's part to patch the **20 series and later but leave the x201 out.

>There's near zero chance you will actually be affected by the exploit.
By that logic most people should never bother patching anything at all. If the existence of a remote exploit allowing an utter and complete compromise of something such as the ME could be ignored, then why even worry about anything at all?

It really, really depends on budget and if you want it to be ultraportable, portable enough or back-breaking but powerful.

New... Eh, I'd say new T470's go for around $650-$750. Your best bet if you want a balance is T430, T440 if you want a bit more battery time and don't mind the non-physical TrackPoint buttons or you're willing to make the mod.

If you want it to be as ultraportable as those crappy "mini netbooks", go for the X230 or X240. Or if you have the need of a DVD drive, a EliteBook 2570p, but anyways, isn't an external DVD drive much better for either case?

You gotta do good waiting on them
My 701C I bought for $100, it was just an 'IBM ThinkPad' on eBay.
There was a lot of 770 ThinkPads, selling for $130. I asked the seller if he could ship via FedEx, and it went down to $60.
Two of the units were 5:4 display units, I listed one of them after installing an OS and it sold for $260 next day on an auction w/ Buy it Now.

Read up on the kind of ones out there.
I did get a few broken T20's, A22m, and 380 for about $40 each. They don't work but meh.

I initally bought my A31p for $70, now I'm at $360 so far into it.

My last purchases were two broken 2521's for $150 each (didn;t read it was broken), and a 755CX for $70

Hm, the problem is, if I wanted to do all my purchases through eBay, I would be ass-raped by the shipping fees because I live behind the wall. Oh well, maybe in a not so far future I can move to the US and cut costs.

The lowest price that old ThinkPads I go for in local sites is about $18, without shipping, for models such as 300 and 600, but generally they are for parts or do not have AC adapters.

And I can safely assume that repairing them would cost more than it would cost to get those elusive W70xds or X30x or X1x0 models... But I guess it doesn't matter as long as it fills the empty slot in your collection, I guess.

I know that feel. Before buying anything, try to find an alternative charger with a similar jack. I mean I booted my T30 with 19-20V charger even tho these computers are meant to be used with 16v charger. It should be fine if you used for a short period of time. Longer usage of higher voltage charger may break it. If you manage to find that is. But yeah, you should buy that charger because you can use it to quite alot of thinkpads (just like T60 chargers works with T420) etc.

The top panel, and bottom one are bent.
>>
>>60273939
That's true, I guess I can buy the charger for it. It's not like it's too expensive anyhow, they go for up to 8$ on ebay.
>>
I found a T400 with a working battery for 120 euros. Is it worth it?
>>
>>60273945
If you don't need it replaced you could save the money if it all works fine

The bottom part you can buy a replacement palmrest cheaply, or even some chink/hk empty shell palm rest, and youd need to switch over all the circuit/wire stuff from yours into that, but it would be even cheaper as it'd be only the plastic
For the top, its harder to find screen bezels alone but still possible too.
Also have a look for broken / fucked up / missing-loads-of-parts X220 on ebay, it's a really cheap way of having a bunch of spare parts.

Don't forget you can have up to 16GB ram, the IPS screen is much better than the TN, an SSD is a must, and you can have an mSATA hard drive alongside a second hard drive
>>
>>60274398
>>60273994
if by 'top and bottom panel are bent' you meant the palmrest, and the front of the body, then yea again look for replacement parts or a cheap not-working for-parts X220
>>
>>60274377
Not really. What are the specs? If you do not know the specs then ask the seller to tell the Type number of the computer and pray to god that it is not "CTO" model (Config-to-order, meaning that the tp.krelay.de can not tell its specs)
>>
>>60274412

The bit I'm describing is where the palm rest joins the bottom of the laptop on the righthand side. I guess I'll look for videos of other people replacing it to see how difficult it is.
>>
>>60273567
the screen alone makes it worth it, it it's this model: B156HW01 V.4
AFAIK it's the only FHD display on the w510 but it's not IPS, it's a very good TN .

I have a T530 w/ a stock 1600x900 screen; could I buy a 1920x1080 replacement and not have to worry about the voltage inverter board?
>>
>>60273945

Update they offered me one of three options:

>a partial refund and I keep the machine.
>a full refund.
>the swap out the machine with another one.

What do you think, comrades? Has anyone any experience with replacing the palm rest and bezel?
>>
>>60277807
I do. It's not difficult. Look up the prices for both parts and have them pay you the cost.
>>
>>60276834
the heatsink using dgpu on the non dgpu one
>>
>>60277807
>>60277922
Scratch that, make them throw in an extra $10-20 for your inconvenience.
>>
>>60277960
Why didn't it work on the t420s? It should work almost universally, since on all non-s boards I've checked the difference between them is an extra pipe leading to an empty spot where the dGPU should be. Is the motherboard layout totally different on that model for some reason?
>>
>>60277960
>>60278016
I'm on mobile but looking at the two different motherboards, it looks like it should work on both models, you might just have to remove some of the black adhesive. Have you personally tested this?
>>
>>60278016
that's what i thought too, but instead of an empty spot, it has something poking out. that plastic

>>60278095
yup, I've tested it myself.

Just installed Linux Mint 18.1 in my x220. Temps dropping until 50ºC.
Do I need any extra package? Been searching in Thinkwiki but don't know what to look for...

Murder them because my ThinkPad is fully upgraded and worth more in parts than any 2570p could, but also has the superior keyboard.

If they changed my T30 then I'm okay with it. Too bad I can't get rid of Intel AMT and other botnets
>>

If it includes all that shit, I'd just sell it all and buy another ThinkPad, pocket the difference.

Can i install a Dell DW1510 wlan card on the T430 or am i going to get cucked by the chinknovo whitelist? Is it easy to change the bios?

What's the optimal thinkpad configuration right now? T420 with an Ivy bridge quad core mod and 8gb ram?
>>
>>60278670
maxed out P70
>>
>>60278670
You can bump that up to 16GB RAM.

Either that or the same on a T430 with a keyboard swap.

Ivy Bridge works great in a T420, but there are some issues with SeaBIOS/Coreboot (which is a requirement for using Ivy Bridge on a T420).
