>>60258547

I don't know what the fuck you're on about. It's a very simple claim of a very simple concept, relying on the same logic you use when you look up any other word in a dictionary. "Nopan," or ノーパン, is a Japanese word. It's constructed from two English loanwords "no" and "panties," and means "no panties." It's used in tags on image sites for images of girls explicitly not wearing any panties or "going commando." Period. End of story.

It doesn't mean that you "just can't see panties." That would make any image of any fully clothed female qualify as "nopan," which is not the case. This has nothing to do with /k/ so please just slit your throat if you want to pain to end quickly.

I'm a tech noob. yesterday in old thread got directed to "IPFS". so far as my dumb brain comprehends, isn't that a good solution to make this new nyaa distributed and robust?

>>60259091

ipfs shines really well with static files.
Pub sub for ipfs does exist and we're exploring the option of using that for this but I'm still not sure what the best option is for making it distributed.
We've also looked into having ipfs client side so people wouldn't have to download a daemon to access the site.

I'm not following. I'm absolutely not familiar with IPFS and how it works. I was glad to understand torrents at some point. So you mean besides static files to have update functionality with the publish/subscribe thing?

>static files
they mention web app deployment in one of their talks. but I guess this can't be used, bc nyaa isn't static?

There are currently a couple of us exploring ways in which we can use IPFS as a backend for data. Currently the idea is to have release groups run a node which publishes data to IPFS. When new content is released it adds the new entry to a json file which has an array of every release to date from that release node. At the same time of it updating the json file, it will also send out an event over pubsub to notify anyone listening of a new release and the data of the new release. This allows the people listening to download the files/add them to a database, whatever they want to do with the data.

Thats a good gist of it so far, the main idea is down but it's still in early discussion and prototyping.
>>
>>60259538
IPFS default uses DHT and other internet magic like DerkelDAG and stuff, to put a single file, or collection of files, into a single hash.

However, there are various features to make more dynamic content. IPNS is an example, which lets you point your PeerID to an IPFS hash.

Thus, instead of sharing a new hash every time you make a change, you can share a single hash paired to your key, that you can update at any time. (Though, it expires after 12 hours or so)
You could also change the DNS on a website, so people can go to /ipns/example.com, instead of remembering a long hash.

Meanwhile, PubSub is a more experimental feature, and it can be thought of like a distributed IRC server. You "Subscribe" to a "topic", and anyone who "Publishes" to that topic will have their message sent to everyone subscribed.

Using a combination of both systems, a couple of us thought it would be a great idea to have the indexer be more distributed like this.
>>
>>60259582
I prefer this to the other one desu
>>
>>60259645
>>60259677
ty! I will study IPFS more today before I start playing around with it.

>distributed indexer
ohh, that sounds very promising!
And when I "subscribe" I also contribute towards a more distributed site? sounds like we don't need torrent anymore with IPFS? I'm confused.

>DNS
isn't that the next single point of failure? or does IPFS have a distributed DNS way

ty for the hard work!!

So has anyone solved the smallest resultset full traversal problem?

Build an index with a tree of the titles with 128 - 1024 children per node by splitting every word of the title and adding it to the tree, push the result on IPFS, let other nodes search it. (Sorting by anything other than name is not possible unfortunately)

e.g. you search for "Boku no Hero Academia"

one query will be issued for each word

query "Boku"
100 results
query "no"
10000 results
"Hero"
250 results
"Academia"
90 results

Right now the most efficient way is to take the smallest result set and traverse it entirely. In this case you'd have to go over every "Academia" result and check if the other words match. Since the site is paginated you can also stop the search after finding the first 100 results or whatever. The problem if there are less than 100 results. You'll have to go over the entire database subset. Depending on the query this might not be a problem but if the query returns a fuckton of non matching results that is effectively the same as downloading the entire database. Right now the pragmatig non-solution is to just give up after scanning 1000-10000 results and ask the user to manually continue.
>>
>>60262536
There's not a lot of groundwork laid out for IPFS, so everything kinda has to be done from scratch. A couple of use are still in the designing and prototyping stages of how this thing would even look like.

There are also a few clear issues with using IPFS.

Ideally, a database would be saved on IPNS, and several people would regularly pin backups in case anything happened. This would be fine, but at the moment IPFS is very "loud", as it makes a lot of connections.

Alternatively, there was an idea to make Search queries over IPFS PubSub, and let search bots return results. This would sort of distribute the load of doing search queries to different "Query Servers" and let the clients make sense of the results.
But this requires the client to be running an active IPFS daemon, which isn't exactly lightweight. Alternatively, someone can set up a public IPFS gateway while only exposing parts of the API for the purposes of this system. But that only adds another point of failure.

Although IPFS is usable, it's not ideal yet.

How come? Is it because of some quirk in how the database software works?

This... sounds interesting.

IPFS already works on a merkle tree, so maybe if every result was linked by a word.
Rather than IPFS, look into IPDL, and checkout the `object` and `dag` sub-commands.

>>60262768
If you're searching a database to fill a page that must not be longer than 10 items, what do you do if you can only find 5 items? First 5 would be close to the first results found, but how do you know there aren't more than 5? You have to traverse the entire database in that case, when inversely, if you find 10 items you can stop right then and there.
>>
>>60262745
How about just uploading stuff to IPFS but maintaining a regular sql db? You visit the site, get the hash from the db, use IPFS to download.

>>60262877
Oh okay, I think I understand that part now.

I'm not sure how this avoidable. If there less than 10 items, you're going to have to keeping searching the database until you find 10. And if there aren't 10 results, then you'll end up going through the whole database. What else can you do?
>>
>>60262535

>>
>>60262939
There are two choices:
Download the entire database
Accept that the search may be incomplete

How many are going to pick the second one if they can just go to nyaa pantsu or some other central index?
>>
>>60262745
>But this requires the client to be running an active IPFS daemon,
My understanding is this has to happen anyway otherwise the site runs from one machine again. also it would be a way to contribute for people not so CS adept.
>>
>>60262939
No clue.
The other anon was suggesting using a tree of nodes that are associated by title.
Each node is associated by a unique word, so you can find the node with least links, search it, and return results with the desired title.
You still end up traversing an entire database if you don't meat your quota, but this time it's a MUCH smaller one.

I thought it might be interesting if these nodes inter-connected more so that if you were to search "boku no hero" it would find "boku", see that there's a node connected to it leading to results containing "boku" AND "no", and continue on before checking the current node for all available results.

...But then I realized, that although this might be really fast for search queries, and never lead to a situation where you can't find enough results, it would also take a lot of space to build such a complex structure, and make things a huge spaghetti mess, especially when adding new entries.
