They're not pretending; the problem is unintuitive, and there's a fuckload of people who suck at statistics.
I think if you take it to the extreme (a million doors, eliminate all doors but two) it becomes very obvious to people. And from that example they can infer the 3 door case.
I believe it's the fact that there's only 3 options that's making it hard to understand

In the case of 100 doors, Monty basically shows the goats in 98/100 of the time. He doesn't show your first choice, so it's either of the two.
This is the idea that people can't let go, I think.
