Nice snow.
>>60247379
Obviously it helps to have multiple monitors
But the interface itself is really well done, down to the last detail, including and especially the interaction part
>>60247323
Comfy as fuck, but ZNES is a piece of the past.
>>60247379
starting with version 12 the entire interface is vectors so most of the plugins can be resized and not lose functionality
he's got everything set fuckhuge for some reason. and while the program doesnt span through multiple monitors on its own you can detatch individual modules and drag them outside the program

I miss when this was the better emulator than snes9x

I don't think there are many people seriously using Acme.
The "everything is just text" thing however is an amazing way to design an interface. I think Oberon had that idea first.
And it also works nicely with the "search anything" mechanic, because anything is text and you can search for it,
which is somewhat similar to the "goto anything" in Sublime Text.
Those are the 2 features that stand out the most. But it's like all the plan9 software. It's old and feels really minimal and featureless. And it has almost none of the functionality that you're used to from modern software.
That makes it hardly usable nowadays, although it is possible. Rob Pike still uses it today.
>>60249660
I mean, plan9 is good as a really basic UNIX-like system, but you're very limited software wise.
The program ideas themselves and the interfaces - particularly acme, sam, and rio (the window manager) - are very cleverly designed to work together with the mouse.
There is plan9 from user space, which ports some of those programs over to the UNIX/Linux world for those interested; though I'd say try out plan9 in a VM and play about if you're interested. It's a fun little platform.
>>60249660
>The "everything is just text" thing however is an amazing way to design an interface.
>>60249967
Nah, in the sense that even the menu items are just text. It recognises certain commands and will execute them with a middle click - you could rewrite the menus entirely just like you would any other piece of text.

came in here to post renoise too. the darker themes it ships with are beautiful, and it looks perfect on every platform i've used it on. unfortunately the last few releases of 64-bit renoise don't play nice with 32-bit plugins under lignux kernels past 4.2.x, so i'm stuck using it on windows 'til they figure it out.
>>60250157
Explain why you think that's good. It just looks like a forest green Windows 95 interface that only contrarians could love just so they can boast about not being a "normie."
>>60250227
is that bitwig? i've heard great things but i already use renoise, flstudio, and milkytracker, so i'm hesitant to throw a fourth DAW or composition program in the mix.
>>60249292
if it was extended to more programs,

Simpler times, not even nostalgia. As a graphic designer I vomit everytime I look at Steam, client or web.

>>60248159

>>60249109
what does pastel have to do with anything? you can set the colours
>>60250486
plan 9 is a bit like that. if you open a terminal and launch a GUI program from it, the child program takes over the terminal window until that program exits, returning control to the terminal program. every window is an instance of the window manager, and every sub window is an instance, and so on recursively.
>>60249596
i don't know why they changed to a worse colour theme around 2.8
>>60247296
NT4's UI is fantastic. It's Windows 95's but with a handful of changes that have lasted well into Windows 10 (well, if you aren't accessing the fancy Metro/whatever they call it now version of the dialog)
the windows 95 UI was basically the only time MS ever actually made an effort -- it's totally a System 7 clone, but they actually went and made it more comfortable to use (although, a handful of things suck in comparison, like how lame shortcuts are to aliases)
>>60248628
plan9's UI is basically a list of things not to do, and plan9 does a bunch of things I love -- but the graphical interface is full of "honestly deserved to be forgotten" late-80s/early-90s ideas
on an unrelated note, RISC OS's UI sucks too
really, UIs that demand a 3 button mouse (as opposed to those that are just made more convenient by one) kind of suck in general

>but the graphical interface is full of "honestly deserved to be forgotten" late-80s/early-90s ideas
Such as?
Also, RISC OS was my first UI and I liked it.
>>60254177
fuck, the IRIX desktop is so slick
easily the best looking of the Motif-based ones
the icons, the cool italic font
it's not the most stylish thing, but it clearly has a solid, bold sense of style (which is to be expected, SGI machines look like fucking sports cars)
the one thing I never liked is that scrollwheel widget
>>60249562
OS9's UI is gorgeous. Slick lines, a brighter gray than OS8 (makes it look cleaner), it's just very clean overall; the only issue is the sheer amount of Mac programs (even PPC native ones) that have half-B/W, half-Platinum interfaces screwing it up.
>>60249596
renoise's UI is pretty solid
still wonder why they made the default colors suck, but it's at least editable
kind of wish they would figure out a better way to do the instrument view though, it's basically always kind of sucked
>>60254382
>nucleo nlog
Thank you. There were a literal metric shitton of Winamp 2 skins made back in the day, but almost all were more or less garbage for actual use, and well-crafted ones such as this were rare to come by.
>>60254441
unmarked "interactive" text is almost universally a bad idea, for starters (basically, clickable things need indication, kind of hated this in MPW too)
highly customizable toolbars are nice - but having it just be an editable by default text buffer is a miserable idea
emphasizing the right and middle buttons as "you actually need these to do anything" as opposed to activating auxillary menus or convenience features (eg, right click drag quick menu or middle click drag scrolling) is generally awful
could say more, but I haven't used plan9 in a while because I didn't like it
if you enjoyed using RISC OS, I can see you enjoying plan9's UI just fine, I just can't stand either myself
>>60254463
>There were a literal metric shitton of Winamp 2 skins made back in the day, but almost all were more or less garbage for actual use, and well-crafted ones such as this were rare to come by
man, that shit actually made me use the stock Winamp 2/3 skin for years since I didn't know of any actually good ones
shit, my xmplay skin these days is the stock Winamp 3 skin now
>>60254577
It's funny because I love Plan 9's UI but hate the fact that buttons on smartphones and tablets are just text without any indication to show that they're buttons.
Plan 9's mouse chording is crazy for productivity.
>>60254220
it's amazing how much nicer System 7 made the Mac UI
I can't stand using System 6 for extended periods of time, only reason to bother is because 7 is a fucking hog on anything without an 030 or up and like 12MB RAM, even like System 7.1, System 6 boots in basically no time at all

Dance eJay 2+ was so much better than any of the other ones just because it had 16 channels instead of 8, and significantly longer song lengths too.

The UI design is a cycle
Once round and blue-ish interfaces become the norm, they have about 3-4 years before everyone is tired and start seeking dark and sharp boxes. Once those dark and sharp boxes become the norm everyone starts seeking round and blue-ish interfaces.
You can see it in OS, buttons, websites, programs, games - everywhere
