2-3 VMs that require at least 2 GB each + your computer which should have at least 4 GB to run smoothly. Leaving you with a 8 to 10 GB requirement.
If those VMs are shitty Windows 10, they require 4GB at least.

I like to run two copies of runescape, one copy of second life, run 2 sandboxed browsers for different tasks, keep my browser caches in a ramdisk, use a temporary ramdisk for build files without having to worry about cleaning it out constantly, run a windows VM for testing builds on on windows without shutting it down and starting it up constantly, and an encrypted VM for pizza while still leaving a few GB free for the OS disk cache.

Two browsers with a shit ton of tabs. One on each screen with mostly youtube crap on the right one and mostly sad panda doujins I've lazily been postponing the download of.

When I start the browsers up they usually only use up ~10GB for the first two but after about a week It ends up suing all my ram for some reason, forcing me to shut them down and restart them to free up memory.

When RAM get more reasonable again I'll try to get another pair of 8GB sticks to see If there's an end to how much ram can my browsers gobble up.

Why? Why should I prove anything to some random guy on the web?

More than that - its my money spend. If I would want to buy and install 64gb RAM, why not? If I would want to run some RAMdrive, why not? Same for using one of my three 1tb HDDs installed to install and multiboot several different Linux distros for shit and giggles.

Because.

There's servers even today which have literal terabytes of RAM. For general purpose desktop PCs, the last column of that chart is a config which is both ridiculously expensive and way overkill for almost anyone.

Anyway it is predicted that the line between SSD storage and RAM is going to blur in the coming years, so an OS and all locally stored data sitting entirely in what is essentially RAM isn't a much contrived prospect in the long run.
>>
>>60248658
Who said that VMs must have gigabytes of memory allocated to them? For fucking around with some distro in a VM, often just one gigabyte per VM is going to be enough. So you could run 4 VMs with 8 GB of physical RAM and still have 4 GB for the host OS.
>>
>>60248696
Then it must be one fattass of a botnet, or was written by complete idiots who think that they never have to free up memory again after the 3-4 GB ceiling went away with 64-bit going mainstream.

The same way i could survive with just 4 threaded cpu but what for? I wanted the extra toom 8 threads give me and if i was assembling my pc now i would take 12 threaded ryzen.

>>
>>60259674
Yes, but Chromium is pretty much the sole reason I need 16 GB. And I'd still rather see more of my RAM used for the block cache than for Chromium.

The funny thing is that it didn't always need this much. Before I upgraded my main desktop a few years ago, I used to have 2 GB of RAM, and was actually fairly happy with that, and the reason I upgraded was much more because I wanted a faster CPU. My laptop still has 2 GB, though, and has since become completely unable to run Chromium, even with a tiny fraction of the number of tabs I used to have on my desktop. I've had to switch to using Firefox on it just because Chromium destroys it.
>>

In that case I'd love to know how you've tuned Chromium to make each tab use about 20 MB on average, because that's what it used to do for me too long ago. Now it's more like 100 MB per tab on average.

That's almost exactly my setup, except I'm on Debian 8. Result is >>60259655.

I have from time to time wondered if the memory usage is caused by ABP or Vimium, but it's not like Chromium is usable without those anyway.
>>
>>60260991
It also seems to be lying about its memory usage. For instance, the Chromium process that's running this 4chan tab is reported in Chromium's task manager as using 172 MB, where as its RSS in top is 660 MB. Even if I sum the Pss fields in its /proc/$$/smaps file, I get 585 MB, still a long shot from 172 MB.

Chrome is terrible software. Please refrain from using it.
>>
>>60261159
I'd like to, but I don't know a better alternative. The big problem with Firefox is that if some tab hogs the CPU, there's no way to find out what tab that is and kill it.
>>
>>60245604
I don't but it's nice to have I guess.
