HDDs are bottlenecks on any system. A dedicated GPU with 0.5 or 1GB VRAM would make a 4GB system fully usable without hiccups. You'd even be fine with 2GB as long as you have a dedicated GPU. No, but as a dev who works with TB scale* databases not even I need more than 32GB for test. Prod has 256, but test just needs enough for a single user workload as the tests run, and SSDs are quick enough to keep up.

One of the reasons I bought that much RAM in 2012 when I upgraded my PC is that the last PC which used DDR RAM just wasn't upgradeable anymore when I needed more RAM. At that time DDR RAM prices were unjustifiable high because it was already superseded by DDR2 and DDR3 RAM. That's why I went with the maximum RAM with the next PC.

My system was fine with 16GB even while using a VM with GPU passthrough. (4GB Host+ 12GB Guest).
Only reason I upgraded to 24GB RAM was so I can have some more headroom for host if a VM is running and allocate a full 16GB to guest. Even then, it is overkill for most tasks.

I needed 32GB for deep-learning / CUDA toolkit. Running a large seq2seq lstm neural network with one-hot encoding inputs means that the arrays are usually hundreds of dimensions deep. It's pretty standard for my software to use 22-25GB of memory with 7GB of video memory as well. I've been moving to embedding layers since they're more efficient but they also have their limitations.

Unless you're doing serious stuff you don't need 16GB or 32GB.

I'm not a weeaboo neet and I'm not afraid that Windows might steal my data, then I don't need VM to run a supposedly safe OS like Linux.
For everything I do, 8 GB RAM is more than enough. For most people even 6 GB are fine.
