Fucking normies.
>>
255 would have been more understandable
>>
>>60243506
Yup I'm sure WhatsApp just needed to save space so they used a char instead of a short.
>>
>>60243516
I assume each participant gets an ID local to the group chat
Then 256 checks out
>>
>>60243541
>storing the ID in 2 bytes would have been too expensive
>>
>>60243558
With most mobile contracts still limited to several hundred megabytes or single digit gigabytes of traffic, every effort to cut down bandwidth should be welcomed.
>>
>>60243620
The difference between 100 and 256 is meaningless in the real world, nobody is going to do 100+ group chats

They did 256 because LOL IM A NURRRRD GET IT GEEK GEEK 8-BIT COMPUTING

Gonna add The Independent to my blacklist.
Thank you.

Why did you quote me
(>>60243742) for this?
>>
>>60243820
Because it wasn't clear from the OP that the source was The Independent.

literally WhatsIRC by now
>>
>>60243506
IRC had unlimited channel sizes since the ancient days.
>>
>>60243516
Yeah because a chat with 0 people makes a lot of sense?
>>
>>60243716
So you're suggesting they bit pack the ID with something else to save some part of a byte? They could do that but compared to saving a byte its a lot of effort. And who knows. Maybe they use languages where bit operations are a hassle somewhere in the pipeline.
>>
>>60243506
Well yeah, when you're arab and need to contacting the Jihad.
>>
>>60243716
>nobody is going to use feature
>so lets introduce an arbitary made up limit
or they could just use the existing limit
>>
>>60243788
Anon could you share your blacklist. I always think about making one but I never get around to it. I trust you have good judgement on these things if you're blocking them in this situation.
>>
>>60243506
> oddly specific number
Fuck do they even interview anyone or ask questions?
Literally just ask anyone who can code hello world and they know why it's 256

You know, I keep thinking, you guys know the phrase behind pic related? Most of you oldfags should know.

But isnt whatsapp exactly how it would turn into if EVERYONE started using it, and started talking less?

Everyone is writing tiny notes to eachother and are being deaf mutes to eachother as well.
>>
>>60243788
Do you physically block their IP's or do you just refrain from interacting with them?

Pic related.
Also all state funded media.

>nobody is going to do 100+ group chats
There are two groups keeping track of local police officers in the rural area I live in. This lets us avoid a few speeding tickets. We needed to do two groups because the first one filled up pretty quickly.
>>
>>60243506
why only use one byte?
>>
>>60243716
>nobody is going to do 100+ group chats
t. 4chan loner
>>
>>60244591

Of course it does fucking dumbass. If you have a chat with 2 people and they bot abandon it, you need a way to understand that it has 0 people and should be deleted.
>>
>>60246706
#!/usr/bin/env pseudo
onLeaveChat(channel) {
if channel.countParticipants() == 1 {
channel.deleteFromServers()
}
}

One possible way to flag channels for deletion once the last person leaves.

>nobody is going to do 100+ group chats
>t. le social shutin
I live in a residential cluster with gatekeeper. We have a WhatsApp group to coordinate among neighboors. 170+ houses. If a couple is living a house and both are in the group, then you get 250~ people.
>>
>>60246706

>>
>>60245531
>I don't have any friends
>I bet people who have friends talk to 250 of them at once!
in your mind, how does this work?
>>
>>60247234
Not that anon, but groups this big are more like big community boards to keep people in the loop of whatever is going on.
Kinda of a big deal they increased the size of the groups since most people have whatsapp and it's way to keep them informed of local shit.
>>
>>60243506
WOW! Look how technology is changing the world. In a few years will be 512!
