>tfw seriously considering getting a t43p just to have a real IBM thinkpad

It's making me anxious, looking though the wiki I see the best cpu is a single core pentium m 770 that's much slower than current atoms...

Do I pull the trigger? I'm going to regret it right? Is it worth it to just to have the "real" IBM thinkpad experience?

If it has IBM logo and is 32-bit then it is a real IBM computer with magnesium/titanium-body.

Previous generation keyboard, with BIOS mod to use all the keys
Upgrade screen to IPS
upgrade ram to up to 16 GB (2 ram slots)
Buy an mSATA to put inside the X230, for a second hard drive
SSD for main hard drive instead of slower HDD
Expresscard slot - (expensive) another hard drive, or some USB 3.0 slots, or a plastic cutout that can store things like sd cards, or an eGPU setup with an external monitor for gayman
Buy spare motherboard with better CPU for slightly faster processing
buy palmrest with fingerprint reader if yours doesn't have one
buy camera if yours doesn't have one
9 cell battery over the 6 cell for more battery life
slice battery for even more battery life
different trackpoint texture / blue trackpoint, if you prefer a different trackpoint
X330 mod (bunch of converter things, cut out bezels, install 13.3 inchscreen, or, 1080p 12.5in screen mod (both quite expensive)
Replace thermal paste if temps are shitty

>>60227717
Well, I think T420 is more than plenty for many years to come thanks to it's upgradability. But given the recent years and Intel's fuck ups in their security part, I would rather just use T30 even tho it's cpu is 15 years old.

Seriously? Even Lenovo deems it a high enough priority to commit to BIOS updates for models way back to the xx10 series.

Think about that for a second. Most smartphone manufacturers won't commit to critical OS updates for phones that are 2-3 years old, but Lenovo thinks this is such a big deal that they are issuing firmware updates for 7-year-old machines.

Last thread I asked if my Thinkpad would warn me if im using a lower wattage brick than needed. They said yes but never clarified whether it's Windows what warns you or the BIOS (old version 1.40 on mine maybe that's why no warning) for example. I recieved no warning (with battery attached) so assumed it's all ok but today I decided to do a test without the battery and to my surprise the cpu won't go above 800mhz, which means almost surely it's being throttled by lack of power. Brick is a 65w adapter, laptop is T520 with i5 2520m with igpu, upgraded FHD, 1 msata and 2 hard drives, came with 65w brick, might not sound much but maybe extra hard drives and fhd display are what's consuming more juice. So is there any other way to check if the brick is not enough?

Also sometimes when doing cpu heavy tasks I notice my battery level will go down slightly from 100 to 96% while plugged in. pls help

>>60230107

Woah, nice. Might get one then, been considering either an X230 o X240 but this Elitebook is so packed and good looking it's hard to resist. Not like the X series has space for a second 2.5 hard drive anyway.

I'm thinking of buying my first Thinkpad because of this option.

Choosing between T420, T430 and T440p.
T420 4Gb

I really want the T440p (I will use external keyboard and mouse), but doesn't come with expresscard, might not work with eGPU, and the T420 lacks USB 3.0 (need it for the Kinect 2).

So mite buy the 430. Hope /g/ doesn't get mad because of that Hardmod thing.

I'm considering eGPU so I can carry around my desktop GPU with a Thinkpad without expending a grand on a gaming laptop.
>>
>>60230989
Then you're gonna want the T430 or T420.
>>
What is the difference between a t4XXp and a t4xx?
Am I correct in saying that the non-p models have less powerful processors?
>>
>>60231033
Before the xx40 series, p didn't exist and normal T series could have both dual cores and quad core upgrades (since they were socketed).

Then Jewtel decided that they were going to fragment that market, and started shipping ULV on different soldered BGA sockets. Normal wattage cores were still socketed.

This caused Lenovo to split their brand, starting with the T440, into the ULV version that couldn't be upgraded easily, and the "normal" wattage T440p version that had a normal socketed CPU.

Essentially, the lineage jumps from T430 to the T440p, instead of the T440, because of this change.

-p did exist before the --40s, it was the precursor to the W series. The T61p was the last of them. As you said, the T440p is the successor to the T430, with the regular T440 being a closer relative to the T430u.

is getting a t540P with a 4700qm worth it? is it possible to get that processor in a T440p? Reason being I use VM's. I don't plan on gaming, I don't care for a gpu either. and yes i would swap the Tx40's trackpad with a trackpad from a Tx50 for the better experience.

So I grabbed a T420 for pretty cheap off of ebay, used but functional, without any HDDs.
It arrived today and it looks pretty reasonable, but of wear here and there but nothing that bothers me too much. I haven't got round to picking up an SSD for it yet, so I'm trying to boot with only a pen drive plugged into it. Its battery appeared to be completely drained when I received it. It boots sometimes when I plug the charger in, and only occasionally when I press the power button. Is this a common issue that's easily fixed or should I return it? Got 14 days to send it back so I'm not in too much of a hurry

Are T4XX (ie T40) worth purchasing? Because I sure as hell don't see it as a good idea. Are they unreliable and prone to component failures?

While I agree the architecture is outdated performance is not. Given that most laptops have an i5 or i7 XXXXu processor they're always lowered power consumption which stops being relevant when comparing to the sandy and ivy bridge M. Even the 6700HQ is on par with the 3720QM which you can get in a thinkpad/latitude/elitebook for cheap. Also if you're gaming on one literally KYS

Hello /tpg/,
I have a HMT351S6CFR8C-H9 4GB DDR3 ram module, and I want to buy another 8GB one.
I came across this one: CT102464BF160B (http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct102464bf160b)
I know it is a DDR3L. My question is if it will work as a DD3R in sync with the other 4GB module on my T420.
Anybody familiar with this? (I want that 8GB DDR3L because I might get another one in the future to get 16gigs)

x220 i5s are 4 generations behind. Performance is more than clockspeed. Some of us also like to run 3-4 programs at a time.

wiki clearly says there is a difference between old and new keyboards. There is a different pinout in the shitlet one and that's why these pins needs to be covered.

Seriously shoot yourself shitpai
>>
>>60233652
I have an X220 tablet PC and it's awesome. I do multitasking easily. I also run virtual machines on it without much of a problem (and 2nd gen i5 is as far back as I'd go to run a VM).

Even my X200 tablet is good enough for basic multitasking and browsing, and it has a low-power Core 2 Duo.

Unless you're doing hardcore video encoding or something, the X220 is more than enough for most people.
>>
I'm thinking about building an X220 for laffs. I have a brand new sealed motherboard with whatever mid level i5 which is decent enough. How hard would it be to procure all the necessary parts to build it brand new? So far the only thing I'm having trouble finding is the fucking antenna wiring. Anyone know where I could get them?
>>
>>60233439
Oh really? So I'm looking at either a W530 or a M4700 at this point, both have Ivy Bridge procs and meet my needs. If anyone has any personal experience with either let me know. I know there are diminishing returns after Sandy Bridge so W520 and M4600 are also on the table.

I'm planning to at least dualboot if not run GNU/Linux exclusively, I don't envision any major issues on the thinkpad side, but I don't know how Dell machines fair.

I don't lurk /tpg/ that often, but I seriously hope y'all didn't and don't recommend the T430s to anyone. Just got out of trying to get to the CPU to replace the thermal paste because I couldn't even get the keyboard bezel off. The guide on Lenovo's site is allegedly for the T430s and T430i, but the illustrations may be for the T430i, because the wiring going through the bezel isn't removable from underneath the keyboard; I don't know how the fuck you're supposed to get it out without tearing the whole thing down. The CPU gets so damn hot that I had to get a shitty cooling fan for it. Back on the battery, it's one of those shitty batteries like on the P50; you can't get an extended 9 cell battery. The battery life itself is fucking abysmal and lasts you about one and a half hours when you're doing menial things, like a word processor or very light internet browsing (my friend who uses a T430s provided by his previous college claims to get an hour and FORTY minutes, my machine was a refurb so it would be no surprise that my battery is more worn). The only upsides I see to the T430s are the low weight of the system, the USB 3.0 ports, and the one USB port on the back that remains active when the computer is suspended, so you can charge a device with it. Other than that, there is no reason to get this if the the T420 is an option. Hell, I'd even recommend the regular T430, because then you could jump for the better battery.

tl;dr the T430s is trash please don't recommend it to anyone thx u my mans

Personally I didn't care for them much. :x
When I had 15.4" they felt too unwieldy, and the nVidia 140m or whatever it was on the T61p wasn't too awesome to use.
If you're going 15.4" get a W500 so you can do 8GB RAM cheaper.
Otherwise, if you're sticking with DDR2, there is a Titanium lid Z61m or WUXGA Z61p to nab if you are lucky.

Yes, it's the first Thinkpads with AMT. The best you can do to avoid AMT is to get a T60p with T7600 2.33 GHz CPU, ATi FireGL v5250 256MB graphics, and 3 GiB usable RAM. Storage limited to SATA I speeds, 9mm 2.5'' drives.

>>
quick hp 2570p review:
-all metal build is great, feels really solid
-screen is as bad as any thinkpad tn from that time, is "fine" for displaying information humans can look at
-pointer is pretty good, no middle button sucks
-trackpad is nicer than x220/x230
-popout keyboard lamp is hilariously useless vs thinklight(tm), but a neat mechanism to ocd fidget with over and over
-keyboard feel isn't any worse than a macbook pro/air, layout is not as good as xx20 or even xx30, motherfuck any kb that makes you fn modify for pg up/dn
-dvd drive in a 12" laptop is pretty cool, will probably put in a caddy though
-bootable esata port is nice, will probably be underused
-laffo @ smartcard slot
-internal accessibility is fucking great, everything is right there under one panel. once everything is repasted, upgraded, etc, everyday usefulness drops pretty quick, but man i won't dread getting in there like i did getting my x220 heatsink off
-broadcom wifi is shit shit shit with [my linux distro of choice]. replaced it with some jobber intel card i had laying around so now it doesn't take 30 seconds to reconnect after standby

it might sound like im shitting on it, but the 2570p is still a hell of a lot better than most laptops. that sata3 raid0 thing the one dude was jerking off over, cpu upgradability, dvd drive, might be enough for some people to overlook the design shortcomings.

final verdict: still prefer my x220, but a fair 2nd place out of all the laptops ive touched. will use as a beater or whenever i feel like mixing it up. might gift it to the next friend whose shitty acer desolders itself

I was visiting US for blackhat, got called by some TSA guy telling me that he needs to check my laptop.
He then told me to turn it on, which I did.
It booted to default Xfce, he then told me to step a side, then he called another guy then the spent like 20 minutes fiddling with it, after that they called me telling me they can't let this in because it's suspicious.
After arguing, they let me take the SSD, after telling them it had my important data.
Now that I think about it a custom GRUB image might have been a bad idea.
Ever since then, I always swap the boot up device with windows OS when I go traveling.
