I literally can't find any membrane/rubber dome keyboards with full height keycaps (like mechanical keycaps that are full height).

There are only shitty low profile rubber domes available at the moment which sucks dick

Scored an HHKB Lite 2 recently from work. Saved it from a junk pallet which was going to get thrown out.

It's surprisingly tactile and gives decent feedback, definitely not bad considering it's the cheap version of the Professional 2.

Sorry but it's kinda a poor example of a "non-shit" keyboard.

THIS!

I have a Logitech K120, and after all these years it's the last part remaining out of my very first build almost 6 years ago. When it will die I'll give it a proper funeral.

I got a K120 for my new build a month ago because I had no clue about keyboards so I thought it'd make do in the meantime. It's pretty good but damn the spacebar is pretty loud, gotta have to unplug it and see if I can grease it or something.

This Dell and IBM/Lenovo membranes are quite good.

Have both and prefer Dell for feel but it has it's flaws, for example in games it won't register more than two keys pressed simultaneously in some cases.

Also every membrane keyboard really benefits from applying tiny amount of silicone grease on key sliding surfaces.

>>
>>60225800
>>60225860
Bullshit. They have these at my Uni and I can't stand them. The keys are stiff and mushy and the caps are always shiny and slick. Poor quality all around. Their new ones are a little better, but they are low profile chiclet style.

>I-I like taking the time to move my hand all the way from its home position to use the other keys. I-it's much easier than hitting FN for a split second, r-r-r-r-r-really.

The only valid complaint was the lack of sysrq key, but you can magic sysrq with the print screen key, so it's a non-issue.
>>
>>60240025
Serious question: Why do people buy keyboards with so few buttons? Everything's all squished together and without a numpad. What's the appeal?
>>
>>60245298
Stallman and Bjarne Stroustrup both use a hhkb and they have less keys than that, Bjarne uses 2 at one desk.

Personally I love mine, but I'm not a data entry monkey so thats probably why, super fucking nice for programming never having to move your hands from the home row, these keyboards have all the functions normal size keyboards have, you just hit a modifier to use them.
>>
>>60245591
More desk space, less hand movement. That magicforce is very cheap on Amazon. Buy it from them and you can return it with no questions asked if you find that you miss a full size keyboard.

programmers don't do data entry. no numpad required. the keyboards are compact so your hands stay at homerow, you use a function key to access the keys that arent physically there. it's very nice to use once you get over the learning curve

Logitech Wireless Desktop Pro

I've had this keyboard for a very long time. Great keyboard, really.

+ Nice keyboard
- 4 AA batteries

The batteries are why I stopped using this keyboard. Seriously. A wired keyboard does not require any regular maintenance. The same applies to my mouse, don't use the wireless mouse that came with this package anymore.
>>
>>60245623
The idea is of course that they're so cheap you can easily replace them after the 10 years they'll no doubt last and still end up being a better choice economically.

I'm pretty sure they last much longer than 10 years though. I got keyboards from pre2k here that still work fine.
>>
>>60245641
Not everyone here is only a programmer though. Most use their machines for other things.
>>
>all these posts
>still no natural 4000

>>
>>60245826
the point being though, if you are doing literally anything other than data entry theyre all perfectly fine to use, the only keys you miss is the numpad, and that shit is gone from plenty of modern keyboards now.

Be real, unless you work in data entry when was the last time your hands left the letters and numbers on your kb?
>>
>>60245801
but if you spend 10+ hours a day at the computer would it really break your wallet to spend $20-50 on a good mechanical keyboard and $20-50 on top-tier keycaps
>>
>>60245841
That whole layout suggests that the user would have their hands in a fixed position. Yet I never see one of those micro-keyboards (at least not promoted here) in an ergonomic shape, while those are actually made with that exact goal in mind.

You'd think they'd be the perfect combination.

There really is more happening with computers than programming.
>>
>>60245978
so again you're doing some niche shit that requires it, may as well be data entry for all intents and purposes regarding input peripherals, you have a specific need for it.

I know fuck all about that program though, so youd have to enlighten me wether you need the numpad for entering numbers, or just to assign more custom hotekys, if the latter, you dont /need/ a numpad, you're used to that, I use a hhkb with 3 layers of custom hotkeys, so standard keys, functions keys, funciton + modifier keys. I'm not gonna do the math, but thats more than a standard keyboards amount of keys.

It functions as a drumpad/sample choser.

I agree the numpad isn't used that much besides this, some games, and when I do my online banking (everyone needs to enter data occasionally, even programmers), and as most keyboards have this handy extra, I wouldn't know why I would get a smaller keyboard.

Unless I was living in a crammed apartment in tokyo perhaps.

O-rings are like $2 for 200, and its not like mechanical keyboards are that much louder. Razer does make their keyboards louder on purpose, but if you buy any sensible keyboard it will only be 20-30% louder then a rubberdome, and even less with o-rings.

The page up/down home/end keys are a lot easier to hit for me on the numpad when they're placed right along side the up/down/left/right keys. I can scroll through a page slowly or quickly without moving my hand.

Also, I just hate the top row number keys. Even just entering numbers normally on a website, like filling out credit card information, the numpad is much easier.

I've floated back and forth on buying this so many times. I heard there were problems with the space bar not pressing properly. That's the reason I haven't bought one yet. The only thing I don't like is that I use my right hand for the 'B' and '6' keys, but I don't really care about that.

You ever have any problems with yours? I've really been wanting one for quite some time, but like I said, I just can't bring myself to buy it.

>>
>>60256695

Rubber domes work for typing, but there are better things to type on. It's like saying yeah, sure, you can wipe your ass with shitty one ply toilet paper and it costs significantly less, but having used decent toilet paper, would you choose to buy one ply? That's what it was like for me going from rubber domes to mechanical. I still have a rubber dome keyboard in my living room and every time I have to use it, which isn't often, I get a clear reminder that I made a good decision. I don't feel bad at all about it, either. They keyboards I have now will last forever. In the past, I've replaced many rubber domes, so in reality the upfront cost isn't that big a deal. Repairing a mech keyboard is also not difficult and I'd rather have something I can repair that something disposable. I also use cast iron cookware and despise nonstick coatings. Call me old fashioned.
>>
>>60256671
The problem with "ergonomic" keyboards is that once you get used to them, you are gimped whenever you need to use a normal one, be it on another PC, or even your own laptop. Similar to mice which have buttons beyond the three standard ones - it's comfy while you have it available, but once it's not, you're uncomfortable.
>>
>>60245841
I'm using that right now, when it breaks or when something starts getting wrong I'm getting another one.
>>
>>60256738
ISO physical layouts (used in Europe, as opposed to the ANSI design used in the US) indeed do suck, especially if you touchtype (you will type backslashes most of the time trying to press enter or left shift, and press enter trying to type a backslash). As for the Dell keyboards in general, they are not as bad as most rubber domes, but the IBM/Lenovo ones tend to be better still - the Dell's resistance is weaker and very linear, making them more mushy.
>>
>>60246385
it would buy this without a doubt if it had a normal enter button
>>
I'll take a runberdome for reliability. Those things can take a real beating. I literally spilled a full glass of juice in one once while playing a game. I managed to keep typing my message, move somewhere safe, turn it over and get the juice out and kept using it for another hour or so.

It was sticky as fuck the next day but mashing it a bit fixed it.

My mechanical keyboard I got a drop of water in it and the whole thing went nuts.

Way nicer to type on, but I acknowledge I gotta replace mx keyboards every couple years. If I need something durable rubber dome is the way to go. Even unicomp/model-m don't come close to rubber dome reliability. The 'feel' of buckling spring stays the same for it's life though where mx start feeling weird after a year or so of daily use.

I've been using mine since 2011, the spacebar is fine. But I understand where the issue might come from since the space bar is so HUGE. Anyways, no stuck or broken spacebar.

That stupid rubber rocker switch in the center is useless, it's not even analog, just two buttons hidden behind a rocker switch I wish it was a trackpoint instead.

Got a QPad Cherry Mx Blue keyboard, changed keycaps, installed O-Rings and tried everything to adjust myself to it. I just couldn't get used to it, no matter how i tried to change my typing position and not clank down so hard on the keys to hurt my fingers. Then it started glitching and registering multiple key presses, so i i went back to that EZ-9900 keyboard people raved about on here many years ago. Mine doesn't say Vivanco on it. It's basically crap, the keycaps feel flimsy, though they at least have the right shape and texture and aren't icky smooth and overly square like all keyboards nowadays are for some reason. And there is way too much resistance upon initial press, but at least it doesn't hurt my fingers and the shape is just so much more practical, it actually WORKS better for me, even though it's objectively so much worse. I'd love to try a Model M though, but they're very hard to find in Sweden.
