>Information on how to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

Current CPUs informations:
>G4560 for budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>i3 are only worthwhile for dwarf fortress & single-purpose emulator boxes
>i5 aren't worthwhile. Get Ryzen 5, drop down to G4560, or up to R7/i7
>R5 1400 is not worthwhile unless discounted
>i7-7700k is good but bad value. If over budget, an R5 is probably as good or better for you
>R7/Xeon for compute/multitask/mixed use, R5 if on budget.

Currently worthwhile GFX cards:
>RX570, RX480(if cheap & not blower), RX580, 1080, 1080TI
>RX570 is usually all you need for 1080p@60hz
>RX550 & RX560 are worth considering if you just need 6 monitor support for cheap and/or play low end shit
>1060 & 1070 are worth considering if you already have a Gsync monitor. 1050Ti is for mITX builds or if on sale at ~$100
>Nvidia GPU + Ryzen has issues in some specific games atm (Civ6, RoTR, Rocket League)
>Budget builds: consider integrated graphics over a card weaker than RX560
>May for Vega

General:
>No brand/model loyalty. Parametric filters on pcpartpicker can help
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX can often save cost as the board+case is usually cheaper
>1 DIMM is significantly slower than 2 DIMMs

This thread has been on an AMD trip lately. They've made it seem like ryzen is only one or two percent behind intel in gaming, and over 200% better in everything else, and 6 months from now all games will be ryzen optimized and run 200% better in gaming than intel as well.

Now while that's plausible it's unlikely. It's more or less the same story as bulldozer/FX. Back then everyone was on this huge "8 cores is the future! In 1 year it'll beat all intel in gaming because games will start using all 8 cores!" etc etc..

Basically it's possible ryzen will pull massively ahead in gaming, but it's extremely unlikely. The current get of consoles have been 8 cores and have been out for nearly 3 years now iirc, and games still rarely use more than 2-4 cores. Some games (like BF1) do use the CPU very well, and ryzen has a very slight lead over the 7700k in BF1, but imo that's about the extent of what we'll ever see. In well optimized games ryzen might do 20% better, but for the majority of the games the 7700k will still have a lead.

It's all speculation, but there is some precedent.

Ryzen is the choice right now if you want to do anything workbench and such related (rendering, editing, encryption, etc), but intel is still the better gaming choice, which is what most people here care about.

And it's worth noting that it's not like the 7700k suddenly became a bad CPU like people make it out. It's still extremely good at all of those things, so it's not like if you buy it suddenly you won't be able to render or stream shit.

TL;DR; Because of the hype lately, it's been made out like the 7700k isn't worth getting anymore, and ryzen will "mature" and get exponentially better. For right now, this isn't true and the 7700k is still very very powerful, even if some people would have you believe otherwise.

>AMD trip lately
Simply recommending what is best at the price points.

Most of what you say is based on day1 benchmarks where Ryzen had 2133/2400 RAM and Intel had 3200/3466.
The 1600X beats the 7700k in a good deal of games.
Games aren't good CPU benchmarks, anyway. Especially when they do shit like see that it's an AMD CPU and assume it's Bulldozer, and do bulldozer optimizations that fuck up performance on Ryzen. Even in those cases, it still performs well. Simply put, a 1600+AMD GPU never shits the bed like even a 5GHz 7600k + any GPU does in a number of games. It's consistently good, and sometimes it's fantastic.

also >>60221378
>>
>>60221378
Sadly :/ I love AMD. But they don't age as well as people make it out. Ryzen is an excellent chip, but intel is still the better choice for anything that isn't fully 8 core threaded. Very few programs are.

And it's not like the 7700k is bad at any of those things.

Either way, just buy one, and forget about it for the next 4-6 years.

Intel is the better choice for the majority of games, and likely will remain that way. For properly threaded/optimized games, ryzen may have a small to moderate lead, but it's likely that the 7700k will still be better in almost every other game.

But again, either way it's going to be a more than decent CPU.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qnmrCy

how does this look?
>>
>>60221399
What if I don't have the money to dump on a $300 CPU? What about mid-range CPUs that I don't have to spend $150 on an overclockable mobo? Is Intel still better then?
>>
>>60221359
To give you a bit more background you're sort of comparing apples to oranges. Intel has been the only player when it comes to high-end 6+ core CPUs for a while and since these CPUs also aren't aimed at the consumer market they have been (and are) obscenely expensive. AMD on the other hand have always had more cores and with Ryzen now have a line-up that can compete with Intel.

You want more cores for streaming and video editing and AMD is currently offering that at a price Intel can't compete with. Intel hasn't released a current gen version (i7-7XXX) 6+ core CPU yet and these are expected to come at the end of 2017 (edit: jumping to "i7-8XXX" for 8th gen apparently). No matter what they come up with we're looking at a much closer gap than we've seen for years. What they'll do with pricing is a bit up in the air at this point.

You migh have noticed that people feel very strongly one way or the other when it comes to AMD vs Nvidia/Intel and you'll want to be a bit careful about taking anything at face value. The AMD bias is pretty strong on /g/ without that necessarily meaning what people are saying isn't true.
>>
>>60221420
Save your money until you can buy the i7-8700K
>>
>>60221399
Why are you using Bulldozer as a comparison basis for Ryzen?

That's like using Pentium D as a comparison basis for Sandy Bridge.
ie: it makes you a retard.
Pls leave thread.
>>
>>60221420
People on /g/ are usually comparing the 1700 to the 7700k. The 7700k is actually CHEAPER. 300 dollars versus the 1700 $320 dollar, which also performs worse in everything that isn't optimized to take advantage of all those cores, which is barely anything out right now.

>but intel is still the better choice for anything that isn't fully 8 core threaded.
I don't think you understand that your computer can run more than one .exe at a time
And if you're looking to spend 310+ for a fucking CPU, then it better be fucking the best at it

>Intel is the better choice for the majority of games
No. The 7700k* (not intel) has better performance for the majority of games. Is it a better choice for a guy with a GTX 970 from three years ago? Nope, no difference. A guy with a GTX 1060? Still no difference. A guy that doesn't have a 144hz screen? No difference either. Would be a massive waste of money to go for a 7700k in those situations. Performing better at one specific thing =/= Being the best choice

>but it's likely that the 7700k will still be better in almost every other game.
Yes, thats indisputed. That's why everyone here says that if you game and only game, and are looking into high end, only the 7700k is to be considered. But the Ryzen CPUs over much better value than Intel ones, and are straight better at i5/r5 levels (which is what most people buy), so they end up being recommended more.
>>
>>60221359
7700k is poor value for money, but it is the best cpu for strictly gaming. i5 is also pretty much better in same-price categories vs R5's.
However, a few people in these threads actually ARE going to do some workstation tasks, even if it's just some hobby Youtube video editing or casual Twitch streaming. A lot of /g/ are also code-monkey entry level coders, or studying to be. A high-core-count cpu is nice to have for compiling.
It should just be a blanket statement : if only gaming, go Intel. If doing workstation tasks go AMD. You really don't have to think any harder than that.
>>
>>60221440
Yes but you are also ignorning the R5s, in which Ryzen wins in almost every category. If we are talking high-cost CPUs, then yes, the i7s are better than the R7s, but that's besides the point. Most people will be buying a mid-range (read: ~$200 CPU) over a $300+ CPU.
>>
>>60221440
Lmao you're retarded and samefag, probably.
7700k doesn't come with a cooler. A $20 cooler is not good enough for it.

If anything, 7700k should be entirely removed from recommendations because

Sorry lad, $300 + $50 cooler + $170 x270 mobo is NOT cheaper than $320 + 100 mobo. No need to get a high end cooler, or a cooler at all for that matter, to actually benefit from the performances of a Ryzen CPU

>>

What are you having trouble understanding? It's true, Overwatch and CSGO are very easy to run titles. Most FPS's are. I also got well over 60 fps in Overwatch with my Gtx 960 and Fx 8350. If you are going to upgrade your monitor, I suggest doing that before doing a new computer. See what FPS you get. Then try overclocking your CPU and GPU a bit. If your performance is still not satisfactory, then upgrade some stuff.
Btw, 144hz won't help you win any more games. It's purely for enjoyment.

i'd say drop to a 7600k if you are ONLY gaming on the computer. Also what resolution? A gtx 1060 is pretty good for 1080p. At 1440p it handles, but might leave a little to be desired. Don't even try playing any AAA game at 4k with a 1060. I'd get a cheaper power supply too btw. Mobo and ram also seem a tad expensive.

>>60221851
i know HWMonitor can also monitor ryzen temps so if you have that you can also use it

>>60221874
Yeah, as i thought it's a poor choice
If you had a 240hz screen it would've been justified, it's clearly not a CPU suited for you at all
And the problem is that while usually overkill parts is still fine (like buying a GTX 1080ti for a 1080p build means the card will last you for very, very long), the problem is that there's other CPUs around, and while they can't offer the 7700k absurdly high framerate, they usually can provide more futureproofing, much more headroom for multitasking or other (non-gaming) usages

But then it would be pointless because as you said, you barely use any program open while gaming and strictly game, so you'd be getting performance that you cannot use. And the same is the case for the 7700k: the best gaming cpu for not much cpu heavy games, aka performance that you cannot use.
It's not a wise choice, you should downgrade that CPU. You can keep it, but that really is a waste of money.

Did the i7 suddenly become worthless for streaming? Everyone suggesting the 1700 when you can stream perfectly fine on the 7700k and it games significantly better than the 1700. For workstation stuff, then sure an AMD makes sense. Or if you just want to pick AMD for enthusiast reasons, that's fine too. But for gaming, the 7700k is undeniably superior, and it's still a very competent CPU besides.

I have no idea. I didn't even know they offered it until yesterday. It's probably per part and they farm the work out to some guy from your local GeekSquad that gets a portion of the pay. If you're that nervous just go to a LOCAL computer place and ask how much they'd charge to put together a computer if you brought in all the pieces.

Well I don't need it for myself but if it was a onetime buy for a whole comp, it would be nice for suggesting to other people it would be a better deal than alienware/similar shit that people get fooled into buying but if it's part by part it's an even bigger ripoff than those.

Use the money to sell your 6600k and get a 6700k. You'd get a far greater benefit that way.

You can just mention the part name instead of pasting a long retail description. (Nzxt s340 Case, Geforce Gtx 1050 for example). You also should read the OP description of worthwhile parts.
Your case is a little big for your motherboard and graphics card. It won't be an issue, but it will look goofy, especially since that case has a window to see the insides. I recommend you get a microATX case instead. Your other parts are mostly fine, but perhaps pick up a Pentium g4560 and a b250 micro atx motherboard instead to save some dinero.

Found out that the RAM I have on me is DDR3 which wouldn't be compatible with my motherboard/CPU.

Anyway, as I posted before my budget it $600 or less and I already have some of the pieces. I want to use the PC primarily for using art programs like Photoshop, maya and blender, as well as use it as an average performing gaming PC (1080p 60hz monitor). Cant squeeze for any higher than 650 either, since I'm also replacing a drawing tablet this summer.

or

Parts I already have:
-WD 750 GB storage (yes I know that's small, I'll buy an SSD after it's built)
-ASUS DVD optical Drive

Any thoughts? Or will this be the best I'm able to do in my price range?

Planning on building a custom mini-ITX case and put all this inside. Materials, labor, equipment rental, etc, the case should be around $400, run almost completely silent, and be properly sexy. The single fan in the partlist will be the only fan in the chassis, aside from the GPU fan (because the only passively cooled 460 sucks ass). Pic related is the initial design/space check in Blender. Finished building my rig the other day, let me share with you all my experience doing it.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Pd7R8K
It was my first time putting a PC together from components, and I ran into a good couple of problems as I went along. Dropping the CPU in was actually pretty easy, I have strong grip despite my small hands because I'm a laborer, but getting the big asshole cooler in was throwing me into a panic. The springs were causing the screws to jump out of the threads so I was putting a lot of pressure onto the cooler while I tightened it, I was getting scared that the motherboard would buckle under the pressure. I also put the cooler on the wrong way as you can see in the picture, the AMD logo is covering up my RAM rather than being over the empty space on the board. I thought about turning it around but I feared that the pre-applied thermal paste would be ruined and I admittedly had none to spare at the time, but I might do that in the future when it comes time for me to replace it.
Another huge problem I encountered was trying to install the graphics card. That sapphire pulse isn't that big compared to the other choices I had, but the case's frame was getting in the way making it hard to properly line it up with the slot. I also had to bend the 8 pin wire down hard because even though the card itself fits there wasn't much extra clearance available for the wire.

Speaking of, even though the case is fairly large, being almost as big as my 13" Panasonic BT, I found myself running out of room for cable management. All of the cables that came with my power supply are real long, so when I started tying things up it became this big mess in the back because I was trying to reduce the amount that's seen in the front. The only cable that was short was for the storage drives, I tried using one to route to both my solid state and platter cages but it doesn't look like I'll have enough room for the clearance, meaning I'll have to stuff in another cable into this mess when I start adding hard drives next week.
Really though, looking back at my work, I have this feeling of self-satisfaction and the whole shebang runs really great, booted up no problems on my first try. I'm able to (mostly) max out everything I've thrown at it so far and achieve a completely stable 1080p60.

Because they are stupid and think they'll some day "upgrade" to using all those PCI slots.

It's the same as people getting bigger cars than they need.
Bigger houses than they need.
Bigger horses than their asshole can take.

Though.. I got a mATX and I realize now I might need risers because the second PCI slot only runs at 4x speed and the primary card I run games on for GPU pass through takes too many slots.
But if I got a board with 3 spaces for the top slot like the Gaming 3, this wouldn't have been a problem. Oops I guess.

Though frankly, running at PCIe 3.0 4x will probably be perfectly fine. A 5% performance loss at most but usually less.
So yeah, in the end it doesn't even matter. Things'll be okay even in this extreme example.

1600 is fine too if you're fine with overclocking. The 1500X is already better than what you had before.
People love recommending 1600 on here because it's technically the best value IF you overclock. If you don't overclock, the 1500X is better or the same for cheaper for most people.

AMD just sells the ridiculously cheap since they'd otherwise not meet demand if too many people bought 1500Xs.

Does anyone know if you can disable a GPU without removing it so you get x16 pci-e speed when populating 2 PCI-E x16 slots?

What I mean is for the 60% games SLI is fucked in, will I be able to disable SLI and have the primary card running in x16 without physically removing the second card?

I read about disabling a GPU in windows device manager, but I am unsure if that frees up pci-e lanes.

>>
>>60225401
LMAO. because you're on an i5.
Game mode disables one core for the game and puts all other applications and services besides the game on that core.
For a corelet, yeah no shit this fucks you over because you only have 3 cores for the game then.
For anyone with a 6 core or 8 core it gives a huge FPS increase and makes it way smoother without other services interrupting various threads a few ms at a time.

Go look at Ryzen videos on youtube with game mode. It's really great in most cases.

i3 aren't worth it. it's in the op ffs. g4560 is 95% of performance of an i3 7100 but it costs half as much, which gives you more money for a better gpu (more important for gaming). read here: http://www.techspot.com/review/1325-intel-pentium-g4560/page5.html
>>
>>60226596
>is a dedicated gpu necessary or even recommended for video editing and other light content creation (but not gaming)?
Content creation is generally sped up when a GPU is there (thanks to CUDA / OpenCL), video encoding benefits enormously in term of speed from having a dedicated GPU
So getting a $50 used GTX 950 would be better of than say, the jump from an R5 1600 (6 cores) to R7 1700 (8 cores, in term of video encoding speed).
>>
>>60226670
>g4560
Would using that processor make the computer overwall faster? Sorry, I'm quite new to all this.
>>
>>60226691
No. As he said, the G4560 is 95% of the performance of an i3, but is 50% of the price. It's basically the same thing but you pay much less, so you save money that you could if you want use to improve other parts of your build.

>Some Intel H110 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Kaby Lake-S CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.
this is my list btw https://pcpartpicker.com/list/T7Wcr7
Does that mean I should get a different motherboard?
>>
>>60226722
yes. pick a b250 mobo (for example: ASRock B250M Pro4) and up your ram from 2133mhz to 2400mhz. the rest is fine though i'd pick a cheaper case and get a better psu.
>>
>>60226722
It means there's a chance that the motherboard comes with a bios version that does not support your CPU, and you can't update the bios without CPU (unless the motherboard specifically supports a way to do it via USB, but that's pretty rare for budget ones)
Pick a 250 mobo, they all support your cpu from the start
>>
>>60226722
That's actually a fairly solid build.
Though you should get 2400 RAM, not 2133. And get a semi-modular or fully modular PSU as it will make building it easier and it'll be less cluttered.
And yeah, get a B250 board.

You technically don't need a CPU cooler, but that one will be much quieter.
And yeah, that case is expensive. You can get a Rosewill SRM-01 for only $20.

Ryzen 5 1400

ASrock Mobo

2x4 DDR4 2133 RAM

RX480 (8GB, reference model)

4tb WD black internal

Micro ATX case

Should I change anything at all? My demands are very low and this is already way more than I need but an upgrade is needed
>>
>>60226756
An RX570 4GB is faster at 1080p than the RX480 8GB reference model. And quieter.
And get 2666 RAM. Or at least 2400. Shouldn't be much price dif there.
>>
How does R9 290 compare to RX570? Because I can get used one for 120 euro while RX570 are 200 euro new. I'm going to use it with G4560.
>>
>>60226756
>WD Black
Why? Those are much more expensive per GB than other ones, they're for entreprise that want the least vibration and most durability possible

>>60226770

It performs better but not by much. The performance is not worth 80€ at all, thought that is explained by the fact that it's a newer more efficient architecture & that it isn't used
your chocie
>>
>>60226769
Again this is already way more than my needs demand, is there any major benefit for changing the gpu?
Ram I'll look into but I'm pretty set on the reference 480
>>
>>60226770
The R9 290 is close to as good. You can overclock it pretty well generally, too. Power consumption is higher.

Rosewill SRM-01 looks good to me, though.
Get the Red Devil RX570 if it fits in your case.
Rest looks good but you can very often find that 550RM or the 520w M12II on sale for $30-$40 instead if you want to wait a few days.

You be the girl.

On mobile. Will check in and minutes probably
>>

Get an RX560 then. Should be $100 and should be out in a few days. Or 1050Ti if you find it on sale for $100.

why get the 1600 over the 1700?
>>
>>60226857
>Get the Red Devil RX570 if it fits in your case.
It does fit. How is it different from the radeon rx 570 though?
And I don't buy that PC anytime soon, I'm still fairly young and I live in a third world country, so getting the money + shipping costs may take 6 months or so, taking in count other things I want to buy too.
Thanks for the info though.
>>
>>60226914
1700 is way overkill for most people, as in it offers performance that most cannot make use of
>>
>>60226914
It's cheaper and 70% as fast in productivity and exactly the same in games.
>>
>>60226917
honestly there's no point in making a list now when you're 6 months away from ordering a pc. your build might be obsolete by then.
>>
>>60226917
Red Devil is simply the best RX570.
Best cooler. Highest overclock. You can manually overclock it even more and still have acceptable noise levels.

>>60226951
>>
>>60226951
6 months was just a guess, it may be 1 month or 1 year
and doing this is an excelent way to avoid doing what you're supposed to do.

how much of a performance will i see if i upgrade my current CPU from a i7 930 2.80ghz and a 470GTX to one of the newer processors and an nvidia 1070?

is it worth it?
>>
>>60226968
Yes, there will be a massive difference, but do you actually feel the need to upgrade?
spending $800 in a pc without any real reason to do so would be pretty stupid

The 1070 with a CPU that can not bottleneck it is incredibly faster than a 470.
See pic related.
On release a 7850 was about on par with a GTX 480.
Ignoring that yours is a 470 and how much AMD GCN cards have improved over the years it's still a 400% improvement.

Do I need a better PSU for this? I know the CPU is way overkill no need to tell me.
>>
>>60227048
it's fine but 500w would be much better, you don't have that much headroom left
>>
>>60227048
You probably wont need a better power supply if you dont plan on putting in a more power hungry GPU or overclock too zealously but you do realise the EVGA 600B is the same price right?
>>
>>60227074
No I didn't know that, I'll just get that instead and I should be good then I'd assume.
>>
>>60227108
Yeah, it's almost overkill even.
But it's cheap and decent
>>
>>60227034
470 isn't there but it's probably around the 750Ti. It was worse than a 7850.
Benchmarkers stopped including the 400, 500, 600, and usually even the 700 series because they're so garbage and aged like a jizz bottle. Yet they still include the 6 year old 7970. Lmao.

>>60226968
Yes. The 470 is terrible. I'm surprised you didn't upgrade sooner.

>>60227048
If you aren't doing serious overclocking, then no. The GPU is <225w and CPU is <115w. Plenty left over for various other stuff.
>>
>>60227074
>EVGA 600B
>>60227108
That PSU isn't modular like the M12II. I'd get the M12II.
Or wait for the 550RM to go on sale like it always does.

How well does the r5 1600 stock cooler handle OC? I've heard its pretty good but can it go for 3,9-4,0GHz?

I'll use Define S case with 3xfractal fans as intake and 1x noctua as exhaust. Also probably going with leftover MX-4, I quess its better than the stock paste.
>>
>>60227266
>can it go for 3,9-4,0GHz?
no

>Benchmarkers stopped including the 400, 500, 600, and usually even the 700 series because they're so garbage and aged like a jizz bottle. Yet they still include the 6 year old 7970. Lmao.
I think it's more there's no reason to continue benching cards that dont change in
Also I know the 7850 is faster than a 470, that's why i said it was.
I've found an actual number for the 470 since however
http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1980319
http://www.3dmark.com/fs/152718
http://www.3dmark.com/fs/114111 (note, this one's SLI)
So taking the maximum score of 2834 (the others were just to confirm that is about where a 470 sits) the stock 1070 is 5.7x faster than a GTX470
Though you should take this exact number with a grain of salt as the systems in this test were not the same as the other test and the 1070 score was probably in firestrike 1.1 which may give easier or harder scores, that's why i thought it would be cleaner to use a 7850 as a yardstick despite it probably being much faster than a 470.
