Currently worthwhile CPUs:
>G4560 for budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>i3 are only worthwhile for dwarf fortress & single-purpose emulator boxes
>i5 aren't worthwhile. Get Ryzen 5, drop down to G4560, or up to R7/i7
>R5 1400 is not worthwhile unless discounted
>i7-7700k is good but bad value. If over budget, an R5 is probably as good or better for you
>R7/Xeon for compute/multitask/mixed use. R5 1600 is budget.

Currently worthwhile GFX cards:
>RX570, RX480(if cheap & not blower), RX580, 1080, 1080TI
>RX570 is usually all you need for 1080p@60hz
>RX550 & RX560 are worth considering if you just need 6 monitor support for cheap and/or play low end shit
>1060 & 1070 are worth considering if you already have a Gsync monitor. 1050Ti is for mITX builds or if on sale at ~$100
>Nvidia GPU + Ryzen has issues in some specific games atm (Civ6, RoTR, Rocket League)
>Budget builds: consider integrated graphics over a card weaker than RX560
>May for Vega

General:
>No brand/model loyalty. Parametric filters on pcpartpicker can help
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX can often save cost as the board+case is usually cheaper
>1 DIMM is significantly slower than 2 DIMMs
>>
Ryzen is a meme, wait for Raven Ridge.
>>
Newbie here. Do I necessarily need a FreeSync monitor to go with the 1600 and RX 570? Does it make a significant difference? A monitor is the final thing I need, but it being FreeSync ups the price quite a bit.

Fellow Canadians, is it possible to get a decent 1080p IPS panel around $150-180?
>>
Is there a functional difference between a 580 4gb and 570 is 1080p?
What if I upgrade to 1440p? I want to be able to play all my shit in Ultra.
>>
>>60204913
i dont understand why your monitor needs to have Freesynch. I don't understand why you can't just limit the FPS in your games settings to match your refresh rate
>>
>>60204920
>play all my shit in Ultra
>1440p
1080 is the one to get
>>
>>60204946
I already have a 1080p monitor. Should I opt for the 570 or the 580 4gb?
>>
>>60204977
you said you might upgrade to 1440p and want to run at ultra.

580 are the best 1080p value cards, 1070-1080 is best for 1440p and 4k at 30 frames
>>
>>60204999
Alright, that's what I was curious about. I guess I'll opt for the 580 4gb and stick to 1080p then.
>>
Is it possible to cool a 80W cpu with a tower cooler, but without the fan?
The cpu will be capped at 50%.
>>
>>60204913
IPS? Probably not. You can get 1080p 75hz Freesync TNs for like $105-$115 in the US.

>>60204920
RX580 8GB can play most games maxed at 1440p 60fps. But there are some games like GR Wildlands and Dishonored 2 that are shittily optimized and you'll have to drop all the way down to medium to keep over 60fps.
>>
Best 1080 gtx card? Looking to spend around $500. 520 max
>>
>>60205034
Definitely at capped load
You could probably do it at full load too but you'd have to orient it so the hot air rises through the fins.
Basically it would depend a lot of what way your case is facing.
>>
I want to fuck the GPU dragon
>>
>>60204920

RX580 runs most games at highest settings at 1440p

Remember you don't really need AA at that resolution so you can save some frames from that.
>>
>>60205034
http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1367-page5.html

Check out the "Passive Cooler Comparison: Thermal Rise" table to see how some tower heatsinks that are advertised as being capable of passive operation fare during an extended stress test.

It should be possible, but you'll want to buy a either a "passive" CPU heatsink tower or a dual tower heatsink, remove one of the fans, and explicitly set the middle fan (between the two tower heatsinks) to a static low PWM setting, like 20%, in the bios for near silent operation.
>>
>>60204946
>>60204920
>Ultra
>1440p
>GTX 1080

Hah, for the next year maybe. Only do this if you plan on upgrading in 12 - 18 months.

If you're a more reasonable human being, you'll spend the extra 250 and buy a 1080 Ti. Then not need a new GPU for 2+ years

>>60205630
It's fine but you shouldn't OC
You can probably get a higher clock but you probably wont be able to reach the turbo clock on all cores without going up to 90 degrees and ryzen turbo is really quite effective.
OC'd 1800Xs usually have -worse- single core performance because OCing disables turbo.

Compatible and functional are 2 different things.
It's pretty unlikely for it to completely not work but If it's not on the compatibility list it almost definitely wont work at 3200MHz and 2933MHz is also unlikely.
If there's not a single version of that ram family in the compatibility lists of any of the AM4 motherboards then you have to start worrying about straight up unbootable RAM.

I couldn't find a decent review with a gigabyte one but I did find something.
If i were to put slightly in front of anything in your sentence it would be "higher clock speed" because damn the performance gains from this power draw are marginal as fuck.
Even the sapphire card with the 980ti tier TDP was only around 10% faster than a stock 480.
>>
>>60204718
If you're looking to buy a laptop then sure, wait for Raven Ridge. But don't expect it anytime this year. AMD roadmap has that scheduled for Q4 which realistically means actual products Q1 2018. Until then it will continue to be nothing but Intel+NVidia laptops available. This annoys me as a GNU/Linux user since NVidia GPUs aren't an option. Honestly, though, the only reason to get a new laptop is that they are shifting to 1080p IPS as the standard (though they should just go 1440p or 4k already) which is a step up from that garbage 1366x768 TN standard that we've had for nearly a decade (why can a cheap Chinese tablet manufacturer make a laptop with a 3000x2000 pixel IPS screen, 8MP webcam and a garbage Atom Intel CPU but Lenovo can't make a laptop with a decent screen and a usable webcam when they charge ten times more?).
>>
>>60206973
If you think that's bad you should see the shipping.
Same day shipping is a myth here and the only way you'll get next day shipping is if you order early in the morning and the sender is in the same city as you.
Also the prices would seem ridiculous to americans.
>>
>>60207023
Ikr. That's my build and each fucking part is like $20 shipping. I tried my local shops but either they had nothing or were WAY more expensive again.
>>
What's the best brand for the rx500s? I've seen people say both ASUS and gigabyte are junk.
>>
>>60204913
You can definitively get a 1080p IPS for $150 in Canada because that's pretty close to what we have to pay for one in Europe. Make sure you look for a shop that's got the latest technology because the amount of cheap/affordable IPS monitors exploded Q1 2017. A monitor from say Q3 2016 that's been sitting in stock will have a price-tag of perhaps $220 while just-released ones will be more like $150. Also, Lenovo has some rather nice 1440p 24" IPS panels for $200 and 27" 1440p IPS panels at $300.

My advice? If you're going to buy a R5 1600 and a RX 570 then you should definitively buy a 27" 1440p IPS to go along with that. Think about it, you're paying a whole lot of money for a computer. Why wouldn't you spend enough to get a great picture out of it?

Oh one last little detail. You absolutely do not want to buy a TN panel, not in 2017. Those are no longer worth it and they aren't even cheaper than IPS panels anymore.

>>60204936
> Freesync
Nice to have, but you don't need it. If you're looking at two almost identical 27" 1440p IPS panels at the same price-point and one has freesync and the other doesn't then take the one with freesync. If the freesync one is $50 extra then don't bother.
>>
>>60207066
Powercolor Red Devil and Sapphire Nitro+
MSI regressed, they had a good thing going only to fuck it up in the next release
>>
>>60205034
yes/no. :) I use a Pure Rock 140W TDP cooler on a 65W CPU. It has a fan on it that's PWM controlled and rarely spinning.

The CPU is sitting between 36-40C without the fan 99% of the time. If I start something which taxes all the CPU cores at full load over time like ffmpeg video encoding then the temperature will go up above 50C after 15-20 minutes and then the fan kicks in. It's barely possible to hear it at about 900 RPM but it spins.

A lot of massive "big" cooler will do just fine without a fan most of the time but unless it's a really insanely huge one like the NoFan's then you'll probably want to have a mostly unused but connected fan. You can't expect to be able to do something like video encoding which puts full load on all CPU-cores for hours and hours with a passive heatsink. That's obviously not what you'll be doing most of the time but you need a fan for those rare occasions.

Finally get it in the mail and it came with 4 sata cables and would you guess, no I/O shield. I called asus to confirm it still had the 5 year warranty if shits fucked and luckily it does. Asus said they only machine the exact amount of I/o shields as they have boards and basically told me to pack sand. I found one on ebay though. Turns out this guys has a shitton of I/Os in his listings along with other misc stuff. It shipped from within driving distance to the newegg DC. I'm betting this fuck takes the parts from openboxes and sells them on eBay.

Doing my first real build and have a couple of questions. I've watched the full new egg tutorial and understood it all, have changed parts in my current machine but would like to ask.

I want to make a SD card Windows 7 installer. Is there a difference between a USB drive and using a USB card reader with an SD card? I would use a USB drive but my appears to have gone walk about.

I have a 2nd hard drive in my current PC I would like to put in the new one. It's also windows 7, will I have any problems just fitting it in, installing windows then connecting the cables to make it a slave drive?

I'm a little concerned with air flow. Is it now just a case of pointing fans at holes rather than the previous technique of designing an air flow system to move air round the case?
>>

ditch cooler or get a $30 one, either is fine.
get better ram, 2666hz if it's not much more expensive
mITX isn't mATX, your mobo isn't going to fit your case. Either get your hand somehow on that biostar mITX AM4 board, or change the case to an mATX.
Downgrade the PSU, your shit would run fine even on 400w. Put 550w.

How does it look? The only thing I'm still unsure about is the RAM. I went through the QVL for the mobo and all the exact alternatives that should work painlessly are just too much in maple dollars. I just want to have a solid time with 1080p/60Hz, nothing more.

It wont have any effect on idles.
Poor airflow effects long system load temps as the air inside the case heats up.
As for whether that change alone would affect anything, probably.
Outtakes are a pretty bad choice to have both fans be. it forms a negative pressure inside the case when can suck dust in from all kind sof places but most problematically the GPU area is likely to receive no air as the out takes can just suck air in around the fans and other holes above the gpu.
Having an intake pointed at the thing causing most of the heat and an outtake on the opposite end of the case with a neutral to slightly positive internal pressure is ideal

3 is plenty enough. You also have to take the case included fans into account: the fractal design define r5 includes 2 140mm fans (one at the back and one at the front), on top of a built-in fan speed controller, so you can just buy a $10 140mm NON-PWM fan (speed can't be regulated) and you can still set the speed of the fans yourself.

>>60211041
make the build yourself, read the op.
>>
>>60211025
Depending on the type and size of your case, 2 intakes in the front side and 2 outakes in the back/top for an air cooled build is approaching overkill. Usually a big intake fan on low RPM in the front and a 12 or 14cm in the back is more than enough for a nice airflow unless your case is excessively cramped.

The more doesn't always mean the merrier. I had 2x12cm on the top of my case blowing air out and they were doing more harm than good to the airflow in my particular case.

Nope, all 580 have aftermarket coolers. Always avoid GPUs with reference blower designs unless you're sticking it into an extremely tight mITX case or you're going to watercool it.

They don't call them "leafblowers" for nothing, I think most of us learned the hard way when they started manufacturing those.

The asus uses PWM (pulse width modulation) and has the flicker that generally comes with it, the aoc one does not (it uses DC which doesn't have this artifact). It has a tendency to cause eyestrain and mild discomfort to some people (some, not most).
>>
>>60211501
You can save a lot of money these ways:
- Get 1600, OC manually, no need for aftermarket cooler for a mild OC (~3.8GHz) because the bundled stock cooler is surprisingly decent.
- Scale down to a B350 board. X370 chipset is only good for crazy overclocks, SLI/CF support or if you absolutely need the insane amount of I/O or SATA ports
- Consider scaling down to mATX

While 8gb ram should suffice it will still get filled while playing AAA titles with browser and common background programs open. Also 2x8gb kits are cheaper per gb than 2x4gb ones. Consider dropping ram speed to 2400 if it is over budget. Also consider 1440p60hz gaming over 1080p144hz unless you already own a monitor with 1080p144hz, 1440p is pretty much perfection for 27-32' monitors and unless you're used to super high fps gaming you shouldn't really experience less smooth gameplay with a 60hz monitor also they're typically cheaper.

We keep repeating it, read the op
R5 1600 outperforms the 7500(k) in ANY of those by a big margin, and it doesn't need an aftermarket cooler
it also doesn't hit 95%+ usage in gaming
Ditch the CPU, mobo & cooler, get an R5 1600 with a $100 b350 motherboard, and upgrade something else in your build with the money saved (faster ram, ryzen loves it)

Also, there's no need to buy windows 10, cracking it is easy as fuck. And if it isn't, you can still run windows non-paid: they'll just disable desktop personalization and add a watermark to the screen until you get a license, which you can get at any time as long as you are connected to internet.

>I don't understand why you can't just limit the FPS in your games settings to match your refresh rate
I don't know where this meme started. This does not help with screen tearing.
I don't know why anyone thinks limiting FPS somehow magically makes the frame draw at perfect sync with the monitor refresh.
If that were true, everyone would have been using that since monitors have been invented as a perfect solution.

>inb4 it works for me on game X
Just because it seems there's no tearing on your specific game at 144Hz doesn't mean it isn't tearing. Yes, higher refresh rates help hiding it, but many people are very sensible to tear and see it right away.
I've also had people tell me they never noticed screen tearing at sub-60 fps, which is absurd, but some people just don't notice and don't care.

i7s are already pretty bad value, the locked versions are even worse. It's only in rocket league, RoTR and Civ 6 so far, and it doesn't affect only ryzen cpus: also 6+ cores intel cpus, so it's nothing new

There is no (relevant) AMD equivalent of the GTX 1070 so you'd have to downgrade to a RX 480/580, or wait for vega announcement this month. But there's no problem of going with a GTX 1070.

Just about to get underway with my assembly. At the last second, after removing the plastic from my case and getting a good static discharge, I was wondering is it okay to be doing this on a plastic top/metal legged banquet table? I have a wooden desk with much less space, but if it's safer I will use that.
>>
>>60213336
>outside software to cap it (artificially throttling gpu)
There are all sorts of problems and compatibility issues with that setup. One of them being the late input pooling.
>>
>>60214625
your motherboard comes wrapped in some antistatic transparent whatever the fuck material it is, put it on the mobo box and put the mobo on said antistatic thing. Put the RAM and mount the cooler (in that order), then put in computer.
>>
>>60213161
There is a small difference in overclockability between the 1600 and 1600X. I got the X because I still want to squeeze every bit of single-threaded performance from it and I was going to buy a cooler anyway, but in general the 1600 is the better bang for buck and it comes with a pretty nice cooler so you save a lot of money if 200 or 300 Mhz difference doesn't bother you.

Careful with the high speed memory. As of now Samsung B-Die memory is recommended if you want to reach 3200Mhz. Check this list to know which memory is which:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/62vp2g/clearing_up_any_samsung_bdie_confusion_eg_on/

AM4 mobos are a bit finicky at the moment. There's a BIOS update from AMD scheduled for May that they say will improve memory compatibility, but as of right now that's how it goes.
But yes, I recommend high speed RAM for Ryzen as it takes advantage of it, even for games. Take not that using only 1 DIMM will impact performance because you won't be using dual-channel.

I read that some people don't use the wrap to put the board on because it can be conductive. So it doesn't matter if I use the banquet table or wooden desk as long as I use the box and plastic? I should still ground myself with the plugged in PSU, right?

How poor are you to buy a harddrive used?
They are not expensive and then you can return it if it is DOA or if they die within the warranty which is 5 years where I live.
There is no need to do this to yourself.
>>
I'm building a really fuken cheap PC for a 14 year old friend whose mother has almost no money. He comes from a shitty broken laptop, so anything will be an improvement for him.

I'm really lost on stuff that cheap, but I was thinking about a G4560 for 59€ and then the B250 pro4 or the pro-VD. The last one lacks for HDMI.
For the case, memory, HDD and power supply I think I'm done.

And for the GPU, a friend can give me his old GTX 460. If he does that I could go for an i5 7400/500/600. Is the iGPU from these i5 better than a GTX 460? If not then I'd go for the pentium and then a dedicated GPU, but I don't know what one, maybe the RX 460/70 or even the RX 550/60.

There is no exact total budget, but around 500€ on Spain.
>>

depends on what games you play. for comp fps i usually recommend logitech g403/g pro or zowie mice (ec, fk, za).

It's cheaper and takes much less places (and no cable). Speeds are similar. The rest is great

>contemplating picking it up instead of a 1070/1080
1070 is for high framerate 1440p and gtx 1080 is even better than that. You don't need either of those, they are for high end builds.
>>
>>60215239
i'd go for a bit faster memory, you don't need thermal paste unless you have a cooler you want to re-use and also are you sure you need so many fans? spending 60$ on just fans is retarded.

the rest is fine

>>
>>60215542
i'm not an expert on matx airflow but it seems to be a massive overkill.

ryzen has currently problems with SOME of memory sticks which is supposedly going to be fixed with future bios updates (AGESA, next one should drop soon so we'll see).

on the manufacturer's website (in your case: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B350M-MORTAR.html#support-mem) you can check which memory modules were tested and 100% work with their advertised speeds.

>>60215561
8gb version of 470/570 is a waste.
for ~3 years you want a 8gb 580 or 480 if the first one is much more expensive.

>>60215594
ryzen benefits much more from faster memory than intel (~10% more performance in games). usually 3000mhz ram makes the build 10-20$ more expensive which imo is totally worth it
>>
>>60215479

The RAM is because it's just 15€ more because of budget and 2400 MHz, and the same for the HDD. The cheapest 570 is a Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 570 Mini 4GB GDDR5 which is 179€.
