Just got an echo. What are some tips and tricks I should know?

you need a lot of lube to shove it up your ass

If you lay like 6 of those fuckers out in a circle you can summon a friendly FBI agent.

- If you have an Audible account (you should), you can invoke that by saying "read to me".

- You can link it to your Google Calendar to learn what your schedule looks like on a given day. Also, you can give it your work address to get your commute.

- As far as music goes, the Echo works as a Bluetooth receiver (the Echo Dot works as a Bluetooth *transmitter*), so you can connect your phone. If you have Amazon Prime, some streaming music will be free through that, but some will be locked behind a paywall ($3.99 for Echo-only listening). Alternatively, you can add your own music to your personal Amazon Music library for free, a lot like you'd do with Google Play Music or iTunes Match. Spotify works too.

- GET PHILIPS HUE BULBS. Seriously, they're the best thing to pair with an Echo. Once you start turning your lights off and on with your voice, you never go back.

- For fun, try asking it to close the pod bay doors, or how much wood a woodchuck would chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood. Or ask it to tell you a joke (note: it accepts requests for themed jokes, e.g. pirate jokes, Christmas jokes, etc).

- "Alexa, I have a headache," and "Alexa, I can't sleep" are both legitimate queries. The latter enables a white noise skill!

Alexa, tell me a racist joke.
Alexa, conduct market research on me without my consent.

>conduct market research on me without my consent

You mean like every single search engine, web service, website, cell provider, and ISP already does, and has been doing for a decade?

Ship's long since sailed, muchacho. Might as well turn your lights off and on with voice commands.

always leave it on so you get datamined properly.
>>
>>60202468
FBI? Shouldn't be a CIA or NSA one
>>
>>60204542

It doesn't always listen, you disinforming retard. It's not possible for it to do so.
>>
>>60204558
Ok nigger pants how do you think it knows when you say alexa? Fucker
>>
>>60202223

Nef? Is that you? Did you get tired of iOS development?
>>
>>60204802

Why do you think you can only choose from three possible wake words? It's because it doesn't have the processing power while sleeping to parse all -- or even custom -- speech, just the pre-defined strings.
>>
>>60205361
How do you think it knows the difference between the word "catshit" and "Alexa". They limit it to 3 words for user experience sake. Otherwise you'd have xollisions where people say things but aren't addressing Alexa. All your words are processed. Have to be. Why do you think the battery powered tap requires a button press before you talk?

The Tap requires a button press before you talk for power consumption reasons. And the chipset actually doesn't support custom strings.

Given all the concern about the Echo, security researchers are inclined to scrutinize it closely. If it was saving or transmitting everyone's speech all the time, that fact would be plain as day to a researcher. If *one shred* of evidence supporting these accusations came to light, Amazon would be subject to fuckloads of lawsuits and a total loss of customer confidence. It'd do an incredible amount of damage. Why run that risk, when they could just mine data in the obvious way, by profiling you based on the actual queries you voluntarily and knowingly give them?

There is absolutely zero evidence that the Echo actively surveils you, or does *anything* other than parse a rolling buffer for the wake word, while it is ostensibly sleeping. Until there is, please refrain from spurious claims.

>parsing a rolling buffer

It analyses everything you say for the wake up word. I agree it doesn't send it all to Amazon. But I'm not sure how the chiset is optimized for a certain signal. Surely the software, yeah but idk how the chipset would be scanning signals for that. Bc since it's not going to the cloud for processing I doubt it's actually converting the rolling buffer of spoken word to text, then analyzing that. I don't think there is a good enough speech to text engine to fit on an Alexa. So it would have to be analyzing the audio signal which would be an expensive chip to make when you can do it with a now all cpu and software for a little more power.

Oh the dot is push button so you tell it to start the rolling buffer to be analyzed so it's not doing it all the time to save power, like you said.
>>
>>60206410

Right. The Echo analyzes the rolling buffer looking for the wake word, and if it doesn't see the wake word, it overwrites the buffer with the next pile of audio data. Repeat, and repeat, and repeat.

So I'm not sure how this is relevant. It just strikes me as dubious alarmism.
