so many assumptions here. having access to original xbox development hardware =/= creating an emulator that can run natively on another platform. this wouldn't be very useful for developing an emulator to play *retail* titles, and there's nothing to suggest a "developer version" of Halo was stored on the machine. it's highly likely that any sensitive information would have been wiped from the machine before it ever ended up in private hands.

If you were a doomfag you would be aware of portals and bridges that can only be done in the original renderer, though it can be done in ogl, it is hackish. The community is more willing to use vanilla features because "muh purity", this holds back renderer progress a little but that is not where the problem IS at.
ZDaemon, Odamex and Zandronum is not compatible with each other just like Netquake and Quakeworld is not compatible with each other, this is bad for the multiplayer side of things, but it would be worse in doom's case because its netcode was shit. Starcraft is all about multiplayer and thus, source code release would be a major disaster for the community once an alternative to the original protocol comes.
Doom3 didnt suffer any of that because it was always dead anyway, and the codebase was complex enough to disencourage engine creation, although it would be without punkbuster.
