How is it possible that a PlayStation 4 can play in 4K and costs

Sony gets their hardware direct from the manufacturer so it's much cheaper for them. And then on top of that they sell consoles at a loss because they want to make it up in game sales.

PS4 Pro does "4K", not 4K (except for indies and some not demanding titles like NBA 2K17, I think). It's basically no different than NVIDIA's HDR or AMD's SDR, or however it was called.
