what is it about these shitty old UIs that you idiots find "comfy"? they're objectively ugly, is it some kind of false nostalgia, even though you weren't even born when they were in use? I just don't get it.
>>60186419
not nostalgia
just taste
>>60186429
or lack thereof

It's a matter of preference, which is subjective. If you don't like it then hide the thread and fuck off.

>objectively ugly
>false nostalgia
Anti-meaning.
The aesthetic is design from a different time. People had a vision of what made a machine appealing as we do now but that has changed. The new machines are designed to look like more like arcade games. The old machines were much more business like with almost a kind of restrained futurism. They're fun to look at.
I've built a modern machine (1 year old now) in a beige rackmount with a dolch keyboard. I like the look. What can I say?

the ugly is part of its charm imo

Why is it that old WMs often don’t have convenient “close” buttons? They usually have something similar to “maximise” and “minimise”, but not “close”.

What is the language/format used to the lower right? It looks {nice|convenient} for generating {multiple|a bunch of} similar texts. Looks like it’s being used for spam in this case.

They were built with program longevity with mind; you really only were meant to quit one if you were finished with it for the next few hours.
This is also why e. g. old Solaris or Windows 3.x strongly prefer to swap out an iconized program to disk after a surprisingly short idle time.
It was generally believed that would cause less disk thrashing than downright starting something anew, given that free RAM used as (often fixed-size) cache was small compared to the disk accesses needed.

rio is not shitty or even old. finalized by 2002 or so. yeah it may have its roots from 1981-style jerq but it's actually more modern than 70-s style macintosh and windows uis.
