Currently worthwhile CPUs:
>G4560 for budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>i3 are only worthwhile for dwarf fortress & single-purpose emulator boxes
>i5 aren't worthwhile. Get Ryzen 5, drop down to G4560, or up to R7/i7
>R5 1400 is not worthwhile unless discounted
>i7-7700k is good but bad value. If over budget, an R5 is probably as good or better for you
>R7/Xeon for compute/multitask/mixed use

Currently worthwhile GFX cards:
>RX570, RX480(if cheap & not blower), RX580, 1080, 1080TI
>RX570 is usually all you need for 1080p@60hz
>RX550 & RX560 are worth considering if you just need 6 monitor support for cheap and/or play low end shit
>1060 & 1070 are worth considering if you already have a Gsync monitor. 1050Ti is for mITX builds or if on sale at ~$100
>Nvidia GPU + Ryzen has issues in many games atm
>Budget builds: consider integrated graphics over a card weaker than RX560
>May for Vega

General:
>No brand/model loyalty. Parametric filters on pcpartpicker can help
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX can often save cost as the board+case is usually cheaper
>1 DIMM is significantly slower than 2 DIMMs
>>
>heroes of the storm
>starcraft 2
>civ 5
>other not too demanding shit
>on a budget
rx 550? Or should I wait and see how the rx560 turns out?

You can get by the with 550, especially if you are willing to turn down graphics settings on more demanding games.

do you need a mount for your SSD or do most modern motherboards allow you to mount it without a 3rd party mount?

I want to get a SSD but on amazon some come with a mount and some don't.
>>
Asking again.

Can someone reccomend me a good mATX case? I'm building an mATX computer for the first time. Will take any suggestions.
>>
>>60175939
you only need to run a SATA cable to your motherboard

the mounts that come with some SSDs allow you to fit a 2.5" drive into a mount designed for 3.5" drives. most cases have enclosures for 2.5" drives so they're usually not necessary. check your case.

If you're on a tight budget then why are you buying a Ryzen X? Get a cheaper chip, the free cooler, and clock it.

>Also is corsair 650 w enough for ryzen.and rx r480?
Way more than enough. You could conceivably come down 100W and still not trouble a decent PSU.
>>
>>60176328
I already got ryzen and rx 480, whats left of budget is very tight, so which would you prefer over those 2 coolers i posted?

There is no non-x version of the 1400x and 1500x

>Also is corsair 650 w enough for ryzen.and rx r480? Thanks in advance
even 500w is enough
>>
>>60176313
When you have 2 sticks (or more) of RAM, you get the benefit of dual channel: double the bandwidth. There usually isn't much of a price difference between 1 vs 2 sticks (for a same total size) to justify picking one. It benefits pretty much everything you do slightly, even gaming.

>>60176197
Looks good, could downgrade the PSU to a 500w if you want to save further money.

Not really a build but a repurpose for my old PC.
I want to turn it into a file server and seedbox. Which means I need it to run quiet and up all day. I'd also like to put it in as small a case as possible.

Current spec:
>i5 4570, stock cooler
>MSI B85M-G43 (mATX 245*245 mm)
>Corsair VS450 PSU
>1 3.5" drive and 2 2.5" drives

What kind of cooling should I set up for this, and what's the smallest case for it?
Budget is maybe $80

>>
>>60176440
The VS is bad (but not blow-up-your-machine-even-while-not-under-load bad).
CX and TX series are meh.
RMx, HX, and AX are tier 1, A+, whatever other terms you want. Of course, they don't make them themselves, so things can change if the OEM changes, but as of now they're about as good as you can expect.

Remember to only buy the grey labeled ones. The lines with colors are old, and some are really bad quality.
>>
>>60176638
>What kind of cooling should I set up for this, and what's the smallest case for it?
File servers and seedbox don't need enormous amount of cpu, even those running windows.
Try to downclock heavily the i5 for power saving & heat reasons. Putting a custom fan curve to lock the fan to extremely low rpm as long as it's under 60°C would be pretty easy to do, and in fact you could even just unplug the fan (but leave it there for the heatsink) and have acceptable temperatures, assuming you have heavily downclocked the cpu and assuming the mobo lets you touch the cpu voltage.

Ok guys having some old hard drive into new build confusion here.

Will I be able to reinstall windows on a new hard drive and still have everything else look/run exactly on the new build as it was on my current PC? If I reinstall windows 10 on my new hard drive what happens to the old install of windows that was on there before, will I need to manually delete that? Will windows 10 automatically detect my old drivers and delete them and install the new ones?

First time I've moved an old hard drive to anew build without fragmenting/wiping it clear beforehand. Shit's confusing yo.

I plan on playing Resident Evil REmake and 0 remaster on this as well as emulate Dolphin and PCSX2. I don't care about cemu.

Budget is ~$800
How will this do? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VNFwXH
>>
>>60176888
Usually has to do with older/newer version of the same model having different part #s. When this happens the old part# that is no longer being manufactured tends to gradually increase in price from resellers who are hoping to catch suckers, whereas the new parts stay at proper market price.

This become obvious when looking at discotinued products that PCPP will list as 5x+ the original price.
>>
>>60176920
If you have a retail copy of windows, you shouldn't need to reinstall the OS.
You should uninstall all drivers and reinstall the new ones necessary. Windows isn't going to pull your new GPU driver out of thin air.
>>
>>60176990

old hard drive* not new one

>>60176920

I'm swapping out the mobo and cpu from a i5 3570K to a Ryzen 1600 though, I heard that'll be too big a jump to run without re-installing windows
>>
I'm buying an SSD but I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to types. I'm looking at a 2.5" version and a M.2 version of what appears to otherwise be the same thing. Is the M.2 typically a superior option? They are essentially the same price btw.
>>
>>60177035

Completely fucked that linking up there, just swap the posts around.

So basically if I need to, I can reinstall Windows 10 on my old hard drive sitting in the new build then download the rest of the necessary drivers myself without any issue?
>>
>>60176761
I'll see if it can cap it at 1.5GHz.
Should I use something other than a stock cooler? The fan is always on by default, it'd be nice if It's more quiet at lower speeds.
>>
>>60177072
If you have a Retail copy of Windows, there shouldn't be an issue. Why would you need to reinstall the OS if the only thing that's changing is the hardware underneath it? Why can't you uninstall the drivers now, swap over, and install the new ones?
If your copy is OEM or a W10 digital license granted after upgrading from 7, you may be legally boned, and MS will demand you buy another copy of Windows.
>>
>>60177066
M.2 is just nice because it doesn't need any cables, but you have to be careful to make sure your motherboard will have the right socket type.

2.5" will work on any motherboard made in the last 6 years at least.

Performance-wise there is no difference.
>>
Should I upgrade my i5-2500k OC'd at 4.5ghz?

I only plan on 1080p gaming and I'm going to get either a RX 480 or GTX 1060.
>>
>>60177119

Yeah I'll be upgrading from Windows 7 to 10. I heard that swapping out the mobo and cpu will often times require a reinstall of Windows. Swapping out a GPU etc is supposed to be fine but apparently swapping from intel to AMD and changing motherboard etc. will require a new install.

I'm going to be using a friend's Windows 10 USB, then just not activating it or activating via crack. Will that work?
>>
>>60177159
No. Unless you want a newer platform.
I myself have a 2550K. I pored over the benchmarks to see what my CPU could support without bottlenecks while completely OC'ed, and the limit was the RX480/1060. There is occasionally a bottleneck there, but it's very slight and not constant. With DX12, it will be even less of an issue.
Only upgrade if you're looking at 1070-class performance.

iirc, you don't really need a "new install". You copy just ceases to be "legitimate" and isn't activated once the microcode in the motherboard doesn't match what's in their servers. The machine still turns on and can be used, but it will nag you to buy a copy.

You could get an RX460 on sale for $60-$85 pretty often.

The RX560 is more worth the money if it winds up being $100 or slightly over, even if it's overkill for your needs.
Also consider a 1050Ti if it's on sale like $100-$115. They're not worth it at $130+.

Don't listen to that intel shill, the Ryzen is a perfectly capable CPU. If your alternative is an i7 7700K then I recommend getting the Ryzen 1700K or 1800K. Other than that the build looks fine.

It may be worth waiting to see how the Vega performs before getting the graphics card, though if it doesn't then the 1070 is a good alternative, it has some compatibility issues with Ryzen on a few games but nothing really worth disregarding for

1600X is a waste of money. If you want Ryzen 6 core, go 1600.
Do you actually need X370, or are you buying it "just in case" and never actually make use of it?
Buy cheaper memory. Infinity Fabric benefits (like everything does), but not enough to justify 3200, imo. Go 2667.
The 580 is a poor choice over the 1060, with its obscene power draw in exchange for case-by-case improvement.

Well /v/ is retarded.
Though that's not bad.

I'd change the cooler to a non-meme one that is quieter. CM pro air 4 or whatever the fuck it's called, or the Cryorig H7 if you can wait for them to mail you a bracket.
Le Grand Macho is a good option which comes with a bracket if you'd like a fuckhuge heavy heatsink.
That RAM is super expensive. Yeah it's verified at those speeds for Ryzen but.. I'd get something cheaper even if it might only run at 2933 and maybe only 2666 for a while.

And you could use those RAM savings to get a 500GB+ SSD.

Seems to happen the majority of times with games using DX12, Vulkan, and Gameworks, but not all the time. I have not seen cases of it causing a problem outside of those.
Rocket League was another example, but I heard that one got fixed already. That one was DX9.
There are definitely many more cases than just Tomb Raider.

I'd really wait for Vega. Even when it does work fine, like in BF1, AMD still has better frame pacing.
Frame pacing is more important than averages as long as you're over 60.

If you get to choose between the two, I'd get the M.2, just because it won't take up a Sata slot or a drive bay.
>>
>>60177849
>Why isn't the GTX 1070 worth?
The extra cost of Gsync makes it not worthwhile for the performance you get at the combined cost. You need at least a 1080 for Gsync to somewhat become worth it.

Better off using the savings to get a 1440p Freesync monitor instead.
If you have a 60hz monitor, it's stupid amounts of overkill. If you already have a Gsync monitor...
Holy fuck the line right after that explain all that?

Prepare to be disappointed. Games aren't designed to be run at those framerates, so in many games you're not going to get 144fps no matter the hardware or the settings.
>>
>>60176930
An RX570 does like 120fps on RE7, so I imagine that remake will do fine as well.
Really it's overkill for your use case. A 1500X would be fine but a 1600 hardly costs more, so go for it.

An overclocked 1060 or RX580 runs OW. TF2 at 300fps+... and Doom at like 90+.
Why did you not bother to look at benchmarks? Could have easily saved yourself $200.

Seriously, go 1440p. You are vastly underestimating how powerful GPUs are today and how much power games take. A 6 year old 7970 still keeps up with games from the past year fine except for like GR Wildlands which is unoptimized garbage, and Dishonored 2.

don't listen to this amd shill, the i7 7700k is a better price / performance ratio. You can even look up benchmark guides if you want any proven statistics. Not only is the 7700k cheaper, and more so if you have a Microcenter nearby you can price match with, but it's even faster than the Ryzen 1800k
>>
>>60177754
I'm running an MSI Bazooka, which is basically a slightly stripped down version of the Mortar. It's decent, and the POST times aren't nearly as bad as the horror stories suggested. Takes about 5 seconds from a cold boot for me.

At this point, I'm not getting my college rebate until the start of June, should I put off building a completely new system for the sake of waitingâ„¢ for Vega?
Also, is Nvidia graphics having issues with Ryzen really a thing, or is it just meme? Because I've currently got a 1070 in mind with R7 1700
>>
>>60178264
I would generally recommend r5-1600 + B350 motherboard, but if you're willing to spend extra money for best gaming performance, i7 7700k with z270 MOBO may make sense.
>>
>>60178264
>so what all do I need to worry about my CPU for?
the other programs running on your PC, most importantly at the same time as your gaming because you're primarly a gamer

>>60178282
Any Ryzen R7 has much better price/perf ratio than any other intel CPU. Now, if we're talking gaming and just gaming, then indeed the 7700k is the best in performance and has better price/perf in games than any Ryzen R7.
>>
>>60178272
You have a CPU, you'll need some form of cooling for it. Generally the stock cooler is good enough, assuming a)your CPU comes with one and b)you're not planning to overclock (much).
>>
>>60178272
If you live in a hot place (or specifically if your case gets hot for some reason), want to overclock or if the CPU you order doesn't come with a cooler
>>
>>60178311
considering vega gets released june 31 at worst, yes, waiting is wiser.
But nothing wrong with planning ahead and making a build (on paper) right now, which you would potentially edit if Vega does deliver. I mean, you just have to change the GPU.

>Also, is Nvidia graphics having issues with Ryzen really a thing, or is it just meme?
It's an issue nvidia has with 6+ cores part, it's very rare and with all the games tested on ryzen right now only Rise of the Tomb Raider & Rocket League show this bug, nothign else.

It lacks the main advantage of the 7700k being the absurdly high clocks it has and can reach. 3.6 base vs 4.2, and lower binned. Pretty meh of a CPU in my opinion.
>>
>>60180366
Go 7700K or go Ryzen. The 7700 is garbage. You don't need a z270 board unless you're overclocking and the non-K is locked.
>>
>>60180557

With the release of ryzen all of the locked Intel chips are thoroughly meh because they don't have much of a clockspeed advantage and never will do.

Are you on a 1080p monitor?
I'd save getting an RX570 4GB if it's not significantly cheaper.
Get at least 2666 RAM. Maybe dual rank if you can at that speed.
Maybe use the GPU savings to get an SSD and semi-modular PSU?

So do the Ryzen's just beat out the intel processors then? Because up until now I always thought you wanted to aim for intel.
>>
>https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZGtmHN
Thoughts? I wanted something that looks good, has good performance and amazing reliability so I went with this. Gonna use it for gaming and general office related work. And before you sperg out about how I can get the same performance for much cheaper or how LEDs are fucking ugly because people use ugly rainbow colors, yeah I know.
>>
>>60180832
Ryzen's performance per core is lower, and they can't reach clocks as high as intel cpus, but they offer more cores and a lot more threads at the same price which make it so that if you do anything that scales well even past 8 threads, going intel doesn't make sense anymore. 7700k is 4 cores 8 threads @ 4.2 - 4.5GHz, R7 1700 is 8 cores 16 threads @ 3.0 - 3.7GHz. Naturally, the 7700k beats the 1700 by a big margin in gaming, and the R7 1700 dominates completely the 7700k in workloads that scale with cores (video editing / encoding, anything rendering, blender, keyshot & handbrake, etc etc)

>Because up until now I always thought you wanted to aim for intel.

Ryzen just plain beats all but the 6700k/7700k at everything, and it beats the 6700k/7700k at most.
Well, except the G4560 due to price, obviously.

The 1600X, which is cheaper than a 7600k, still trades well with the 7700k, though.

Personally I would never, ever go back to a system with no SSD, and I'd be willing to sacrifice in other areas to get one in there.

Consider going mATX and with something like the Core 1100 case to save some shekels. Look at 4GB cards if you're going to be gaming at 1080p, and consider the RX570. Consider quicker RAM.

I've been trying to look out for some cheap semi-modular PSU, and so far nothing has popped out at me. You may be able to tell from my case already, but I don't expect it to look pretty at all, and I'm not sure if the cable management will do anything.

>>60180982

I've seen people praise SSDs for a while now, and so far the only reason why you'd get it is to boot up your PC/load your games quicker, right? I don't really mind waiting those extra 20 seconds and besides, I'm not too tech savvy so I'd probably mess something up while trying to move my files, so I'm kind of reluctant to get one...

Built my first system from a combination of hand-picked and free parts, now it's time to re-do it. After some testing my free, old (4-5 years) bronze+ PSU is giving me some issues and it's giving me a lot of erratic behavior. So I'd like to tear it all down and move it to a different case with some better RAM and a high quality cooler.

How does this look overall? The rig will be used for VR and racing sims (hence the wide 144hz 1080p monitor)

I would assume it should be faster at EVERYTHING as long as you take advantage of those 4 complex ops per cycle over 1 complex + 3 simple.
Even at 4GHz it should beat out Intel at 5GHz+.

But most stuff doesn't use a compiler that can compile for that. I don't think ICC has such an option. Correct me if I'm wrong.

No, it's not just load times. Watch your disk i/o some time and see how much disk gets used.

depends more on your form factor, USB needs, M.2, SATA slots, etc.

They are the same CPU.
The 6 cores have 2 cores disabled.
Stock clocks are higher.
The X models may be binned slightly better so you can get higher overclocks on lower voltages.
The 1600X has much higher stock clocks than the 1700 if you're not overclocking.

Weird, i thought gigabyte is the way to go, they have/had a reputation of being sturdy.

Ok, i prefer ATX form factor.
I would like 4 ram slots to have an option to get 2x4 DDR4 now and 2x4 later.
I`ll probably need at least 4 usb.
I don`t really need overclocking (never got into it), SLI and RAID. I`ll need at least 2 SATA for SSD and HDD. I need ethernet, may get wi-fi module and i need passable integrated sound.

The thing is that even cheapest H110 seem to be OK for me, but i don`t know if i`m missing something, Maybe it`s related to bios support?
