Currently worthwhile CPUs:
>G4560 for budget builds (<$500) unless G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>i3 are only worthwhile for dwarf fortress & single-purpose emulator boxes
>i5 aren't worthwhile. Get Ryzen 5, drop down to G4560, or up to R7/i7
>R5 1400 is not worthwhile unless discounted
>i7-7700k is good but bad value. If over budget, an R5 is probably as good or better for you
>R7/Xeon for compute/multitask/mixed use

Currently worthwhile GFX cards:
>RX570, RX480(if cheap & not blower), RX580, 1080, 1080TI
>RX570 is usually all you need for 1080p@60hz
>RX550 & RX560 are worth considering if you just need 6 monitor support for cheap and/or play low end shit
>1060 & 1070 are worth considering if you already have a Gsync monitor. 1050Ti is for mITX builds or if on sale at ~$100
>Nvidia GPU + Ryzen has issues in many games atm
>Budget builds: consider integrated graphics over a card weaker than RX560
>May for Vega

General:
>No brand/model loyalty. Parametric filters on pcpartpicker can help
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity as a scratch disk
>Stop fucking confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX can often save cost as the board+case is usually cheaper
>1 DIMM is significantly slower than 2 DIMMs

so why is the 1070 no longer worth while for new builders again? i'm pretty sure it still out performs the 580 by a good chunk and is significantly less than the 1080

Need genuine help here, I have the money for top of the line, but I don't play any games or plan to play any games that require a 1080ti + ryzen 7/i7 7700k, I was thinking about getting something more middle of the road "best bang for buck", and buying some games with the rest of the money.

Games that I want to play have a recommended 1GB of Vram.

Because it's just not worth the Gsync cost and being locked into Nvidia GPUs for their proprietary tech.
Nvidia may be forced to adopt Freesync soon since Freesync is being so widely adopted, and most TVs today are capable of it with a firmware update that's likely to come with Xbox Scorpio getting Freesync support.

>>60167035
Who said it isn't worth while? Its objectively the best price/performance ratio out there.

Also, 1400 is definitely worth it, considering that when overclocked to 4 ghz with a mid-range gpu it performs exactly the same as a 1500x overclocked to 4 ghz. (https://youtu.be/9KB1cZJLBVM)

I work at a computer repair shop.

around 80% of the failed hdds i replace are Seagates.

This is anecodtal evidence, but i personally also have had three of the seven seagate drives i've owned fail.

Take it for what you will, but desu you'd have to pay me to put my data on a seagate drive.

for a media center pc, what is a good, quiet cpu cooler? hyper 212 is making too much noise. should i go aio or just a big ass noctua?
>>
>>60167141
You're not going to be overclocking the 1400 to 4ghz with the stock cooler.

If this is a true poorfag build I assume you're playing at 1080p, which means you can save money by getting a 4GB video card instead of 8GB. You could put that money into either an aftermarket cooler or upgrading to the 1500x which comes with a better stock cooler than the 1400.
>>
>>60167295
Any recommendations for a 1080p60hz screen as well?
>>

>>
>>60167256
>>60167240
Than which brand should I look into for a 2TB?
>>
>>60167320
if 212 is too loud then your case must have poor airflow and its throttling to keep the internal temps down. Perhaps you should instead add/replace the fans inside to something more efficient. You can even replace the 212's fan if you want.

its the second one i have started to build but I feel like I might be putting too much into the mobo
also not sure how I feel about the single fan GPU as i have only ever used two fan versions but the power is more what I want. definitely want to try the Ryzen though

Also I'm not too sure about my RAM selection
I just want to be able to listen to music and browse internet and play games decently some multitasking would be good

Ultimately want to be under a grand if its possible

Lots of options there, depending on how much you want to spend.

Samsung has been releasing a few good monitors recently - consider the S24E370DL or C24F390 for modestly priced 1080p.

Or just find an IPS / VA panel with good reviews that fits your budget.

>>60167435
With that kind of setup you could definitely get quieter by going with a bigger cooler and quieter fan - the 212 might be struggling a bit with OC, the case should have plenty of airflow.
>>
I'm looking to set up a nice little HTPC that can also emu most things such as Dolphin, cemu, and pcsx2. Would this be able to pull it's weight?

I would be getting the Crucial 2x4, but the site doesn't have it for some reason. The 560 is what I'm currently using on another computer and I have just a generic 450W PSU laying around so I planned on migrating those.

>>60167814
Looks pretty good. I would bump the RAM up to a 3200mhz kit - it's a bit hit or miss right now whether or not it will actually work at that speed but I still think it's worth it, especially since you should be able to get some for even less than the price of the 2666.

The cooler is overkill unless you're planning to overclock to 3.8ghz+, but it will at least be quiet as fuck.

>>60168118
The USB stick will work. It should work with literally any motherboard. I'm just sayin the motherboard itself doesn't have WIFI so you will need either an extra WIFI card or WIFI usb.

Glad to hear that. I hate slimy fucking companies that just fuck their customers as hard as possible.

If you want adaptive sync at any price point below $300, AMD wins. Period. By a large margin, too. Because Nvidia forces monitor manufacturers to pay $100 for the Gsync module, which is *literally* objectively worse than Freesync in every way.

Fuck Nvidia. Fuck fanboys too.

>>
>>60168182
Generally a wifi card will get a better connection because they actually have antennas, and they usually have the hardware to support faster transfer speeds.

Whether or not it makes a difference depends on how far you are from your wireless point, what speeds and connection types your wireless point supports, and what your current USB is rated to handle.

pretty amazing, first time i've seen my CPU at sub 30C in a while, still, good ambient temps doesn't mean good OC temps, going to let the thermal paste rest for a bit then i'm overclocking.

If you're going to stay on stock speeds, the boxed cooler will probably meet your needs. AMD actually included a pretty decent one with the 1600.

You can always buy an aftermarket one later if you decide the stock is too noisy and/or you want to overclock.

If you're planning to overclock, pretty much any 120mm tower cooler will be sufficient to keep OC load to around 60-65C.

>>60168265
What you have is probably good enough, unless you are experiencing problems with it. If you want to upgrade you could get a TP-Link TL-WDN4800.

Bzzzt, wrong. The performance difference between 5400 RPM and 7200 is meaningless by any practical sense. 5400 are much quieter and use a little less power. No reason to get a 7200RPM drive unless it's discounted below its equivalent 5400.

>Now you're just trolling.

Not trolling at all, 72000 RPM is a meaningless difference now that SSDs are mainstream.

There are two possible situations:
1) You have to use a hard drive as a boot drive because you can't afford an SSD

2) You're just using a hard drive as bulk storage

In situation 1, your boot times and load times are going to be terrible regardless of what hard drive you use. Yeah, maybe a 7200 will shave 2 seconds off your computer boot time, but shaving 2 seconds off of a 40 second boot is meaningless and not worth the much, much louder drive.

In situation 2, performance doesn't matter that much to begin with. You're just storing movies or rarely-used programs. You might as well go with the cooler, much *much* quieter 5400 drive.

>>
>>60168529
How many more fps would he get with 3200mhz ram?
>>
>>60168516
If you are using a HDD as a primary disk, a 7200 is going to be at least 30% faster than a 5400 - this means your 40 second boot becomes a 26 second boot. It means a non-negligible difference for booting, loading software, copying or moving files; meaningfully faster for everything. Back when HDDs were the primary storage device people did everything they could to try and get around the massive bottleneck that they present - including getting 10kRPM drives or using ramdrives. Even a 7200RPM HDD bottleneck is huge, and 5400 is adding a shitload more on top of that.

Or, if you have an SSD and you're using the HDD for bulk storage, you could argue that getting a 5400 is worth it to save money, maybe, but a bulk storage drive is going to be sitting idle most of the time, so heat, noise and power are pretty much also meaningless, and the times when you do have to use it to manage large amounts of data (which you will, since that's the entire point of having a large bulk storage drive) it is going to be slower than molassas.
>>
>>60168602
How much does he even really need?
>>
>>60168565
Yes. If you're going for 2x16GB, you want 2667MHz(faster probably isn't going to happen right now). If you're going for 2x8GB, you want 3200MHz. With Intel, you want the fastest modules for your required capacity on your motherboard vendor's QVL that aren't absurdly expensive.

>>60168750
>I heard Freesync was garbo compared to Gsync.

It really doesn't matter.

If you have an AMD card, get freesync. If you have an nvidia card, get gsync.

You'd be absolutely stupid to buy a freesync monitor and hook it up to an nvidia card, for the sake of $100-200 (shouldn't have bought nvidia if you can't afford that), adaptive frame sync is amazing tech.

Being tech dood where I work paid off in that I've built PC's for 6 coworkers and service them as needed. $50-$100 a pop for builds, $30+ for any repairs or otherwise. Cool $50 to reinstall printer drivers or $30 to pull a CMOS battery. And these are the people I work with. I certainly want to start my own business as well. I just don't have any formal certifications. Not that I think I need any though.

How much does having a liquid cooling loop go from the GPU directly to the CPU (or vice versa) without having a radiator in between them impact cooling? I'm curious about water cooling, but it seems way too fucking expensive for what you get (a GPU block that's just a machined piece of metal costs over $100? >>60169734
It's about the same as any other cheap tower cooler, but it's quieter than some. The Hyper 212 for example has comparable performance for less $ but is louder.

Like other entry tower coolers, it is better as a stock-upgrade than for any big OC.

For most overclocking a bigger cooler is preferable.

This isn't true for Ryzen. An H7 is all you need for quiet 3.95-4.1GHz.

That's true for delidlake, though.
>>
>>60170124
Frequency is in hertz (cycles per second). Latencies are in cycles. You want to optimize for latency in seconds, so you want the smallest CAS/frequency number you can reasonably afford.

What work? Assembling a PC takes an hour tops. Picking a list of parts takes an hour tops. KBM can be had as cheap as $20, which is probably the quality of whatever that one ships with.

I just ordered a new case, aio, and 2400mhz memory....for my 4790k

I'm probably gonna send it back, cause my scythe mugen4 pcgh can rock it at 1,250mv @ 4.5 ghz at about 75C max during full load (bout 40-50 while gaming), and it's dead silent.

RAM, I'm not so sure, but the switch from a 4690k to 4790k was very minimal (4.6ghz on the i5) even in games like PUBG, though BF1 feels a lot smoother in 64 conquest. So ram will probably make even less of an impact.

I'd recommend a better mobo because the one you have is quite the budget one. Granted, it has two PCIex16, but it won't overclock very well. Get two ram sticks instead of just one, but otherwise it does look good. Your build doesn't need 650w though (500w will suffice) so if you want to save some money, you can downgrade the psu. Otherwise everything good.

Isn't the build you linked literally half of your budget though?

one last bump because I wanna know if the Ryzen 5 1600 is gonna hold up well. would an i7 be better? upgrading it in the future would require me to ditch both my mobo alongside the CPU unless I'm getting yet another AMD one, so I wanna make sure the 1600 will last with good performance

GAMING IS NOT FOR POOR PEOPLE ALRIGHT? G4560 WILL BE COMPLETELY OBSOLETE IN JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS GO PLAY IN THE MUD OR WHATEVER YOU PIECE OF SHIT

PS GET THE R5 1600 OR GO HOME YOU KEK
>>
>>60171883
Even the best gaming cpu, 7700k, reaches 75+% usage in games, while the R5 1600 will stay around 40 ~ 50%. An i7 (whichever) would give you more framerate but will end up becoming the bottleneck sooner. I'd personally recommend the R5 1600

>Will this CPU + GPU match cause any trouble?
Nvidia has a rare bug when paired with 6+ cores cpu where their gpu will have lower % usage than it should, causing lower framerates. It has only be noticed in Rise of the Tomb Raider DX12 & Rocket League so far, no other game seems to have this problem
>>
>>60170622
It does look great for a very high end build, not much else to say about this. Can't see any flaw.

Biostar has announced one 2 weeks ago and i saw some guy in here say that they released yesterday, but i haven't seen it in any online store so far so no idea.

The list you sent is good, except for the 1 stick of RAM but i'm fairly sure you're doing this for upgradeability purposes which is fine.
>>
>>60171941
I can finally sleep. thanks anon. on a side note, I keep hearing the term "bottleneck" being tossed around but never quite got a solid definition since I'm a moron. Does it mean the CPU will end up outdated sooner than later because of assorted reasons (or maybe it already is outdated) and, as a result, holds back the GPU?

> but i runned some tests and saw that all the cores were running at 90c wtf?
stock cooler on K versions is asking for your cpu to melt, they heat way too much for it. It's probably the stock cooler + uncleaned heatsink of the cooler that made it reach such high temperatures
>go with what i have
yes, not much reason to upgrade, your coolers is good. You can always buy a 140mm PWM fan and slap it on the heatsink where the existing fan already is (though you might have to do some sorcery to make it stick to it) if you want to upgrade
>>
>>60171985
When something becomes a bottleneck, it means that specific thing will be the one and only thing in your build preventing you from achieving higher performances. A weak CPU will prevent a good GPU from being used to it's maximum, and the other way around. Sometimes it may be other parts of your builds limiting you such as the PSU not feeding enough the GPU, your motherboard refusing to reach the boost clock of your CPU, an extremely slow hard drive causing stutter, etc etc

g4560 is for budget builds or htpc, it's fine for light gaming but shits the bed really fast. You'd have to close some if not all your programs before starting a game to avoid massive stutters and even then, in CPU heavy games like GTA V it's going to be a stutter fest
It's for budget only
>>
>>60172249

Why not build yourself? It would end up much cheaper and be more fit for you
Either a gaming laptop or either a mini/micro-ATX build considering you live in military barracks
I'm more tempted to say laptop because it requires no setup at all, just a wired mouse and a desk
>>

Well, the plan would be to use it as a guide.

Laptop would be the msi-gt72vr-dominator-pro-450. I don't really need mobility, but like I said I will be moving 2x within the next 8 months. It seems like this msi is the best desktop replacement in my budget. ~ $2k

If the LED's are working but the system isn't turning on then it could be that you haven't put your case wires in their proper place in the front panel connector. Make sure your front panel connections are in the correct place; power switch, LED's, reset switch etc.

Why the R7 1700?
Also if you're so focused on getting such a high end build, getting 3000 / 3200MHz ram might not be a bad idea. Ryzen loves it.
>>
>>60172947
Check RAM compatibility to make sure you don't have to underclock. Ryzen is still a bit picky with memory. Also which monitor do you plan on playing? That's a pretty beefy GPU.

>>60172977

I'd get higher but the MB's specs say it only supports up to 2666MHz.

>It was the cheapest R7, what would you recommend?
Do you actually need the 8 cores of the R7 cpus?
>>
>>60173136
Probably not, but how does the R5 1600X compare?
>>
>>60173116
I wouldn't have my problem if I had a different case. That one seems to suck air in fine from the bottom and front unlike mine. The P400S has no bottom intakes except for the PSU, and the front intakes are extremely narrow. That's why I'm considering adding one more intake to the middle top.. even though I'm fairly certain that both top slots are designed to be exhausts. The case did come with a filter you can put on the top though.
>>
>>60173189
It has two less cores but is higher clocked, considering you don't need the 8 cores it might certainly be a better choice for you.
At same clocks they perform the same in games and general pc usages.

Just get a 1600 which includes a cooler and over clock it to the 3.6Ghz the 1600X offers
>>
>>60173280
R6 1600x comes without cooler so get one
or get a 1600 and get a cooler which will end up cheaper for similar overclock
or get a 1600 and stick to stock cooler which is already decent enough

Your choice
>>
>>60173280

Yes, but see

>>60173293

Also, Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz is on the qualified vendor list for the B350-Plus, and the Ryzen's performance is improved significantly with 3200Mhz Ram. So I'd recommend that, you'll be able to offset the price too by dropping to the 1600 and using the stock cooler.

>>
>>60173280

Also, and this is just my personal decision as I'm building a new pc in the next month or two, I'd recommend waiting for Vega to see how it performs. The 1070 and Ryzen work well in most instances but there have been some example of the two causing framerate drops in certain games. So that might be something to consider too.

So is rpm on cooler more the better? Why is 1350rpm cooler more expensive than 2000rpm
>>
>>60174863
no it's not. as i said rpm doesn't mean shit. what's important is things like the size of a heatsink, heatpipes, cfm rating.

so a cooler with a bigger heatsink, even if its fan has less rpm, will perform better.

smaller coolers have to compensate their small heatsink (metal that transfers the heat from the cpu) by having a higher rpm (they spin faster).

also the more rpm the louder the cooler is.
