More likely it was done to keep the size down.
Font files for complete sets of unicode can be several hundred megabytes, and if you have hundreds of fonts that's going to be huge amounts of data.

My PC was damaged by water the other day.
I stripped it and left it in a small room with a heater + fan for 24 hours.

I put it together and booted it up. Here are the problems I am experiencing

- I cannot boot from my main drive unless I boot into safe mode

- I CANNOT normally shut down. I have tried booting from another drive and I get the same problem. When I try to shut dow the HDD clicks off but my screen shows a frozen"shutting dow" screen. The fans keep spinning and the power lighta are on.

- I cannot boot from a USB or CD

What the fuck is the deal with this shutdown thing? It happens with the healthy HDD as well as the one that was in the PC when shit happened.

I know that sticking to Chrome is "bad, mmkay?", since Google spies on you, but... I'm trying to switch to Firefox, especially since I've run into some sort of bug regarding Quick Reply that doesn't happen on Firefox but does with Chrome, and I've found that I'm basically married to Chrome's UI.

I expect Chrome's menu, not Firefox's icons. I'm used to Chrome's separate, ctrl-f-able page for history, not Firefox's sidebar. I instinctively go to click right beside the back-forward buttons when I want to refresh the page, instead of the entire other side of the address bar. When I ctrl-f, I expect the pop-up to be a small box to the upper-right, not a bar on the bottom with the entry box on the lower-left. And there's countless other little differences between the two browsers that just make me want to switch back to Chrome more and more.

What do? Is there some sort of add-on for Firefox that can change the UI to look and feel like Chrome? Does Chromium not have the Google spying thing? (And how the fuck am I supposed to install Chromium on a Windows 7 machine?)

on windows when i wake up my computer from sleep, the network adapter stops working. It can't get an IP address from dhcp, so I have to disable/reenable it then run ipconfig /renew or whatever.

Anyone have idea why?
I'm only encountering it now because i used to just leave my pc on all day or shut it down, but i've been using sleep lately.

The only thing i can think of is I installed hyper-V and i use an internal virtual bridge on the network adapter now, so maybe the dhcp broadcast is going through the virtual bridge instead of the physical network/router ?

I'm making a networked game with node js. When I run the client and server through local host, the client seems to be unable to keep up with updates if they are sent more than 10 times per second. in firefox, is there any way to get the address bar, tabs and the menu button in the same toolbar without classic theme restorer? it seems like all three are locked and unmovable.

also, is it possible to move the bookmarks bar to the bottom of the browser without ctr?

i'm asking because i'm preparing my butt for v57, when ctr will stop working. i would like to keep my current layout.

the new compact themes are ok, but i liked my own userscript better. however my script relies heavily on ctr and completely breaks without it. i'm not good at css, i'd love to see some of your layouts if you're willing to share. the less wasted space the better. i'm intending to use firefox on a laptop where vertical space is limited.

mmm. sure you're not doing something weird? not an expert on node js (and websockets? or just regular tcp/udp?), but *web servers* handle a thousands times that many requests at the very minimum, even the slow ones. maybe for some reason in your game an update itself is very heavy on resources, and it's not the network part that's the problem?

I already googled, and the Apple community has proven it is shit by having deleted threads, or unanswered threads. Some of them don't pertain to the iPod 5 like I searched.

I'm not experienced in this matter at all, but the big things to worry about are the graphics card, cpu cooler, and hard drive. I've heard of people filling the case with packing materials (non-static!) and calling it a day, but idk. My bet would be to uninstall those 3 risk components and put them in their own containers. The rest I can't answer but perhaps some through googling and forum sifting is in order.

Most programming tools for windows support some kind of CLI these days. You might just need to add the relevant folders to the windows PATH environment variable. However, you might be hard pushed to download *just* the CLI tools for certain applications though.

With regards to IDEs, it's a matter of markets. Classically:
-Windows users prefer to have a single application for a task for convenience. Even professional workflows on windows generally won't span more than 2-3 programs per user.
-Linux users are used to the more ground-up approach and generally don't mind having to use multiple packages to complete a task. In fact, they prefer it: the ability to substitute program A for program B means they can tailor their workflow to their preferences more easily.

Not the same anon, but here's my $0.02:

1. I would go with an air cooler. AIO coolers are quite safe (in terms of leaking) these days, but if it's going to be banged around every few months, I wouldn't want to risk it.

2. I would remove the air cooler for travel. Having a large piece of metal attached to your motherboard while your PC is being knocked around is not a good idea.

3. Remove your GPU while traveling. Same reasons as above, you don't want a big heavy thing wiggling around in there during transit.

4. Look into a serious travel case for your PC. Something like pic related, but large enough for a mATX or ITX case, rather than guns. Pelican is a (rather premium) manufacturer you should look into. This will likely be expensive (likely $1000 or more), but you get what you pay for.

While it's definitely usable it doesn't hold a candle to Win7.
You won't be able to get a full license free anymore, but anyone can use Win10 free now, no time restrictions or anything, you just have to tolerate an "Activate Windows" watermark in the bottom right corner of the screen.

There's no unusual things plugged in, and turning off some devices like tv and such makes no difference so my only guess is that my PLCs are dying.
Is this the usual thing to happen? Any other idea?

I have a 100Mbps internet connection. If I connect to my router in 2.4Ghz mode, download speed peaks at around 40Mbps, but in 5Ghz mode, it gets the full 100Mbps or close to it. My WiFi dongle supports Wifi-N speeds but only at 2.4Ghz, and is connected at over 130mbps to the router, so why the fuck is the download speed through the internets capped at 40Mbps?

What means should I use to watch mkv's on a smart TV?
If I have to convert them to mp4 or some other file type and put them on a flash drive and plug them into a TV (which is what I've been doing), what program should I use, and if I have to pirate it, could you post a link?
>>
>>60157132
ffmpeg.

mkv and mp4 are just containers and could contain the same video and audio types.
what video/audio codecs does your TV support?
A simple remux should probably do it most of the time, this would take 1-2 seconds instead of recoding the entire video.

>>
>>60157281
because an mkv file can contain different video codecs, so even if your TV can read the container, it might not support the codec of the video or audio stream.
remuxing is just copying the audio/video/subtitles/whateverelsethereisin to another container.

Thanks for sticking through this with me. Restarting didn't help but I installed fcitx-module-dbus through a PPA and that got it to work.

I realized I'm retarded and I need to fix my fonts first. I have the Japanese ones installed (adobe ones manually, and stuff like ttf-hanazono through the package manager), however, they don't show up in the font list at all.
fc-list also doesn't display those fonts.
Do I need to copy those files somewhere after installation for me to be able to select them?
I did sudo fc-cache -f -v, so font cache should be updated.

Alright, thanks for the help.
I don't have any allegiance to mint (if you can't tell, I've just gotten started with linux very recently), and only chose it because it's recommended as babby's first.
While I'm still new would it be good to just switch to another distro that doesn't have bullshit like this? I'm not opposed to learning more Linux, I would rather do that that headache over settings menus that are possible in every other distro apparently.

>switch to another distro
to be completely honest with you, I'm not sure. The only two distros I have ever had were Ubuntu (had a bit of trouble with it) and Arch Linux (no trouble at all, and the wiki is the quality that every distro should aspire to).

To install japanese fonts in arch, I think I just did
>pacman -Sy adobe-source-han-sans-jp-fonts
and then I selected them from chromium settings as the default fonts with no problems at all.

on the other hand, arch might not be the right option for a complete beginner...

I'm not sure if the problems you are experiencing are because mint is a bad distro or because you're particularly unlucky or something.

>>60159807
that looks fine. basically BitDefender (great AV in my opinion, by the way) is redirecting a bunch of harmful domains to nothingness, so that for example advertisements don't load... but it seems kind of strange to me that they're all microsoft domains? huh.

I suggest you post here: https://forum.bitdefender.com/

and make sure to mention that IP and post that abuse report. If you browse to that IP from your browser you'll see a weird page, I have no idea what's the meaning of it (but it doesn't appear to be delivering malicious code), maybe mention that too.

post your hosts file and mention that a bunch of microsoft domains are blocked and nothing else.
>>
>>60160041
I see, maybe I'll try Antergos or something. I would assume I could use the directions on the arch wiki better that way. Opinions on arch vs antergos vs manjaro?
>>
>>60160133
Oh, right. I used Manjaro too, when I really couldn't be arsed to install arch even though it takes literally 20 minutes.

Manjaro might be perfect for you. Yaourt is already installed (don't overuse it without understanding that you're using unsupported user-maintained packages, though!), and there are menus to manage stuff, even though you can still do (almost) everything suggested on the arch wiki. If I remember correctly, I followed the instructions on the arch wiki verbatim and they worked.

Never tried Antergos personally, so I can't say if it's better or not.

Whatever you choose, remember to post in that distro's forum, and not on arch linux's forum.

I have a GV-N970G1 GAMING-4GD gpu and a qnix2710 DVI-D only monitor, they work fine together, however curiously the monitor only gets recognized if I connect it with a dvi-d cable to (according to the picture) DVI-I port, if I plug it into the DVI-D one nothing at ll happens.

Now I'm about to upgrade to a 1070, which will no longer have a DVI-I port, so I'm kind of worried this odd behavior will stay, so basically can someone explain this behavior to me? Or is there some nvidia setting I must do so that it would recognize it?
As I overclock the monitor I'd rather not use an adapter with displayport.
Theres also 2 DP and 1 HDMI displays also connected at the same time, if that matters
>>
>>60160041

Strangely enough, I don't have BitDefender, I only have the three AVs I mentioned earlier.

I just ran the Ancile script again, it regenerated my hosts file and Lavasoft Adaware prompted that the hosts file has been disinfected. To make sure it wasn't a fluke I ran the script again and there were no prompts.

I ran multiple scans with all my AVs and none of them picked anything up in the hosts file.

Starting to think reinstalling windows is the best solution here.
>>
>>60160180
Alright, I'll look into it. I'm not completely up to speed on all these distros, so if you could clear some stuff up I'd be grateful. I heard pacman sucks and to use it sparingly, why is that? I've also heard that it's more unstable, do I need to worry about accidentally screwing everything up?
If arch is only an extra 20 minutes, I don't mind. Is the learning curve really that steep? I'll practice through a VM once anyway probably.
