i have noticed on the Vive and Rift VR controllers, they both have this kind of loop or ring, do they serve a purpose or are they just to make it look futuristic and cool.

Don't know. First thought is maybe that way you don't hit your hand on stuff and injure yourself.

they're covered in tracking points, they need to make that shape so the cameras/laser emitters can see enough of them at once to track properly. If they didn't go in a ring like that your hand would cover them all up.
Theoretically the shape isn't the key, it's just the fact that it's hard to cover all the points at once that's important.

I like Oculus Touch's design better, outting ot on the extrrior of your hand in a ring.

the oculus one detects each finger movement, hence the arch
the valve one is just for sensor separation, and having sensors en both directions, because the system works using two lighthouse cameras
