What's the next logical step up from this thing?
Spend a shitload of money or hunt down a vintage stereo receiver.

Entry-level onkyo/technics/yamaha/sony/etc stereo amp.

An actual amplifier perhaps?

where do you really need to go from that? Surely that's good enough unless you're looking to run a bunch of subs and surround sound speakers off it or something.

Go to your local Goodwill/Thrift shop.
Look at those cheap used receivers. Goodwill has literally dozens and dozens per location. They're all being sold from $10-$50. Depending on quality/discounts.
You can always snag used high quality receivers for $20 or less almost guaranteed at any Goodwill near my location. MSRP on those receivers are anywhere from $200-1000+. I have a $1000 ~15 year old receiver and a $200 ~2 years old receiver, both work perfectly fine.
You'll find them on local used electronics/thrift shop/recycling centers.

Yep. eBay isn't bad either. You can find decent ones for sub 100. I myself picked up an older Kenwood kr 2600 and I love the way it sounds.
AV/home cinema receivers are also good, lots of inputs and lots going cheap

That doesnt make them good, they typically dont have the most power per channel and as you add more channels their power goes down yet further.
