How can I tell if my CPU is fried?
I recently ordered an AMD Ryzen 1800x and a compatible mobo and RAM. What I failed to realize is that my CoolerMaster EVO 212 CPU cooler bracket is for an AM3 chip and this new chip has an AM4 socket. Anyways, (and I know Im fucking retarded spare me the shit) I tried booting into BIOS without connecting my heatsink. About 10 seconds after turning my computer on, I touched the side of the CPU and it literally burned my finger. It had to be at least 90C. How long can a CPU last without proper cooling?

They have thermal resistors and will go into cripple mode before self-destructing.
The newer ones can usually save themselves from sudoku but you likely shortened its lifespan by a large amount. To answer your question: they can last a few more seconds than yours did before they melt.

Depends. Luck and design play a role. Some older CPUs could last months, some CPUs survive maybe a few seconds. They all have thermal protection, but I'd not rely on it.

If you just sit the CPU flat with the heatsink on top without screwing it in and not run the fan, it should boot into bios.

Are you saying I should literally turn my computer on its side?

If you want to check if it can boot, that should be fine. Just don't try to do anything like install os or something else stupid.
