>>60116345
Do you want it to be located in a specific physical location on the disk? I'm not aware of any method other than creating a partition in that exact space, installing to that partition, and then optionally expanding that partition to allow you to use the rest of the disk once the install is already properly located.

I have 2 SSD's and one HDD. On my HDD there are my music and torrents and stuff. SDD 1 has windows only. SSD#2 is split between some games and a "free space" for linux. when i create sda1/sda2, how will i know that it gets made from that freespace?

>>60116388
yes
>>
>>60116462
curl | html2txt
>>
>>60116465
>>60116465
You create a partition on that free space and tell arch via the arch chroot command to use that disk.
This is all explained on the wiki
>>
>>60116462
IIRC edbrowse is basically the only usable one with JS support if you want that

>>60116465
That depends on your partitioning tool. Assuming your entire SSD2 is one single partition right now, you'll need to shrink it, at which point you'll need to be careful not to make it smaller than the size of the data you have on there - otherwise bad things will happen to that data. Even if you do it properly, there's always a chance of data being corrupted or destroyed so always have backups blah blah all that usual stuff. (Personally I always yoloed it and it was fine, but the risk is always there.)

Once you've shrunk your partition you're going to have some unpartitioned free space, just create your linux partition there.

Stupid question: on a single-user machine, is there any security risk to chowning /usr to my user account (instead of root)? I'm imagining it's protected because *nix was designed with multiple users in mind, but if I'm the only one who ever uses my computer, does that change the situation?
>>
>>60116555
Oh since you already have unallocated space it should be piss-easy. The difference from that guide is that you're going to have your windows partition showing up, just be careful to select "Free Space" whenever creating new partitions instead of overwriting existing ones. Use common sense and it should be fine

Is there any way to install Debian without bootable media? I don't have a disk drive or a flash drive to hand atm. I know there used to be a Windows installer loader, but it doesn't seem like it was updated for Jessie or Windows 10.
>>
>>60116647
Why would you ever use an actual CD? 99.9% of computers can boot from USB these days.

For those that can't, consider a static boot image on CD that will then load the actual system from USB. There's a guide on doing this for Porteus, it should be adaptable for any distro.

>>
>>60116647
You will only need to do that if there is a significant change to the arch system.Otherwise you just download everything during the install
>>
>>60116685
That's a good question, and it makes me wonder: is there anything preventing you from creating a bootable partition, putting the ISO's files on there, and booting from that?

I can't think of anything assuming it's done right, it's probably never mentioned simply because almost everyone has either CDs or USBs lying around these days.
>>
>>60116647
the tools aren't on an arch install (your hard drive)? you should just be able to use any livecd.
>>

you can install it using a virtual machine (to an actual partition or drive) and then boot that partition or drive

there's a few other ways to do it, another might be network boot if you have another pc handy

Off the top of my head, floating point numbers, better array support (including C-style for loops), much much more powerful globbing. I heard bash has autocompletion nowadays, but it used to be another big selling point. There's definitely more stuff I can't remember because it's been so long since I've used bash.

>fish
I can't remember exactly what but I definitely recall reading about some feature that bash and zsh both have but fish won't implement because it's only useful for scripting.
Fish is "the interactive shell", it doesn't focus on scripting. Zsh can be set up to be just as good interactively, but fish's advantage there is that zsh can require a shitton of configuration to get working how you like.

Because you're supposed to decide what best meets your requirements, instead of blindly following the herd.

Unless you have barely any requirements and don't really care about your shell in which case you probably won't ever use zsh's extra features, so it doesn't make a difference anyway (or you could go for fish and get a nicer experience, if you never script).

What's an easy way to switch between two wifi networks in CLI?

Sometimes my home internet connection will die, but wifi will stay up so from my machine's point of view I'm not disconnected. In these cases I usually enable wifi tethering on my phone, and I'd like to quickly and easily switch my PC to that network.

Currently I start wpa_cli, disable_network for my home wifi, wait a couple seconds as it automatically reconnects to the only other known network (my phone), then enable_network my home wifi again so that when I kill my phone's hotspot, it hops back on my usual wifi again. Needless to say, that's a bit tedious. Surely there's a better way to do it?

With netctl at least you could set the priority of the phone network higher than that of your home network (Priority=X) in the profile files, which would make the computer automatically switch to the phone network once you enable it. Not sure if the delay in switching would be a dealbreaker or how you would go about configuring it further.

Tapping this key invokes the operating system's start menu, if it has one. In Windows, Ctrl+Esc performs the same function, in case the keyboard lacks this key.

So urxvt works under Wayland by using XWayland.
urxvtd is typically started with xprofile or xinitrc, you could start it with systemd except this would prevent you from executing systemctl commands like reboot, shutdown, etc since urxvtd is not part of the session. Also I'm not sure if systemd would be smart enough to know that XWayland is the preferred dependency over starting a whole X server.

Look, AUR just automates the process of you finding, downloading and compiling a program, with the plus of being capable of upgrading and removing like any other package.

>How easy is it for a troll to add something to the AUR that deletes all your anime?

He just needs to add something that does like that in the PKGBUILD. I use AUR a LOT, and it never happened to me of running a malicious script or whatever, and I'm not even cautious about it. But, of course, I'm not used to download and compile obscure software, it's mostly somewhat known projects, but they aren't on Arch repos.

>people may read the PKGBUILD, but not the complete source code.

The source code on AUR should be the same source code on, I don't know, GitHub, SourceForge or whatever place the source code of the program are, because that's AUR does, download the source and blah blah blah. If it's not, and it's easy to notice because you just need to check the link, then there's something wrong.

I've tried this already while solving this problem, but in case you need proofs:

This is after deleting the entire /etc/pacman.d/gnupg folder, doing an init, and then trying to refresh with a different host:

$ su -c 'pacman-key --refresh-keys --keyserver hkp://pgp.mit.edu:11371'
Password:
gpg: refreshing 1 key from hkp://pgp.mit.edu:11371
gpg: keyserver refresh failed: No data

The same error gets coughed up no matter which server I try.

GCC uses the same tactic Microsoft uses - embrace, extend, extinguish.

They introduce non-standard extensions, so that software compiled under GCC could only be compiled under GCC.

Much like systemd introduces needless dependencies just so they would be incorporated into the system.

That's why you should use clang.

Any distro would run fine on a T470. A Libre distro, while a very good thing to work towards, might not fully work on your laptop though, as non-free firmware is a nono. For sure your wireless card is probably not going to work, and I do believe Lenovo whitelists certain ones at the bios so a new one that would work would be tricky. Until you get hardware you know works keep that on the back-burner. But Parabola and Trisquel are nice and besides being Libre-only are the equvalent to Arch and Ubuntu, respectively, as you may know.

As for balls deep, Arch if you are a ricer, Void for ricer contrarian. Gentoo is honestly also a good idea for balls-deepiness. Debian or BunsenLabs if you want to stick with apt since it is also used in Ubuntu. I also feel like Slackware is a good choice for getting a grip on GNU/Linux. If you feel like you didn't really want to go balls deep afterwards and want a nice inbetween then try Manjaro or Antegros.

Keep your nose in the wikis and scour manuals and documentation if you have a problem. And don't be afraid to ask questions. Of course, use VirtualBox until you are sure you want to install it on your hard drive.
>>

>>
>>60123916
No. Just common sense (the same applies for windows.)
1. Barely any malware is created for gnu/linux due to its small number of users, and because the user base is more technically inclined than windows users.
2. GNU/Linux is inherently more secure than windows and harder to create malware for.
That said, there have been recent recorded cases of malware on gnu/Linux (a gentoo user had ransomware encrypt his home directory). This only happened because he ran his web browser as root, so just don't do that and you'll be fine.

Any computer made in the last 2-5 years is basically unusable without proprietary firmware. In the t470, the integrated graphics require blobs (I don't know if they can display anything at all without them, but I think graphics acceleration won't work.) Some t470s also have a gtx 940m, which also requires blobs, even for the free driver (nouveau). Nouveau has horrible performance, so if you want good GPU performance, you'll have to use the proprietary nvidia driver, which is even worse for your freedom. The included WiFi and/or bluetooth chips probably probably also need blobs, and lenovo makes it hard to replace.

OK:
Arch is the best, the other two arent that good.
Antergos uses arch packages and repos, so your finished system will be pretty much arch, just the branding is different. It has an easy installer that autoconfigures tons of stuff, kind of defeating the point of arch in my opinion. Manjaro is kind of bad IMO. It uses pacman and can use the AUR, but uses its own repos and packages. It generally holds packages for about two weeks more than arch before updating them, in an effort to make it break less. Its installer is also easy and preconfigures stuff. If you're really too clueless to install arch properly, which really isn't that hard, use an installer like Arch anywhere, and don't pick a DE, instead of a derivative distro like manjaro.
Every distro that includes nonfree blobs, such as those three should 100% work with no effort required for any thinkpad. Only annoying thing is if your t470 has an nvidia GPU, switchable graphics can be a pain to set up. (I recommend installing bumblebee, check arch wiki, and nvidia-dkms driver. It turns off the nvidia card to save battery, and lets you run programs with it to get more performance when you want to.) Not entirely sure, but I think ricing is a reference to "Racing Inspired Cosmetic Enhancement", basically making a shit cheap car look better with racing decorations. Also named that way because the cars are mostly Japanese.

Does it get better than this? Should I stop distrohopping or will I find something better, more suitable for me? I've tried most distributions out there but I'm still eager to try the ones I haven't.
