I can't even get an interview.

Probably because literally my only qualification is an A+ and "personal experience".

feels real bad not being able to go to school.

A bachelor's in what?
>>
>>60114098
anything, HR are scum who don't care about actual ability just pieces of paper that says you graduated college.
>>
>>60114115
Another question not really related, can't those that have diplomas in history, philosophy gender studies etc just start programming and get a job easier than in their field of study?
>>
>>60114172
yes, many do. and like I said because they have a degree they have a head start at least in normal work.
>>
I blew a bunch of my first interviews and ended up landing a $64K/yr job with benefits straight out of college that started just days after I graduated. Don't give up OP.

>>60115299
Support Engineer at a major software company.
>>

what did you resume look like? did you have any experience?
>>
>>60115333
Two internships before I applied, interned at the company in my last semester of college with basically no experience with their software (a couple of classes touched on basics of it), got offered full time during the internship. They taught me everything I needed to know after.

Well, I'm slowly transitioning back in to a NEET-aholic because every single HR Stacy can't read the three top lines of my resume because that's exactly what I'm about to parrot back to you instead of answering questions relevant to the position.

What are you supposed to say?

This happens in every job, not just in IT. Impostor syndrome is real, and your employers and coworkers know this. Just keep your head down, be ready to absorb whatever you can, ask questions, and don't be arrogant if you know something they don't. It's simple.

Now, for anything not entry level, that's where shit gets weird.

oh my god why are you people so fucking autistic

>phone-based tell me about yourself
Tell them about your home network. Tell them about what issues you have in your home network that you're currently stuck on, even if you think this makes you look bad, (it doesn't). Tell them how you're moving forward to resolve these issues. Tell them what you find interesting about it.

Half the idiots I interview say they're tech people but tell me they use ISP-provided routers with "Whatever wireless standard comes with it" and don't know what firmware flashing is. The other half brag over reciting a 'Hello World' in five useless languages but don't understand how certificate authorities work, or tell me that they disable SELinux by default (Instant no-hire).

I don't give a shit about what you already know, I need you to show me that you're growing, not stagnating.

>in-person interview
You need new clothes. I'm 100% positive that if you're getting interview advice from 4chan, you need to hang out in /fa/ and /fit/ for awhile and then get a proper tailored suit and a proper haircut. Just looking better than your competition will land you the job most of the time. Anyone can be trained to fill in the gaps in their knowledge, and no company wants an autist who makes the work environment weird who asks everyone if they watched last night's My Little Pony episode while eating Doritos open-mouthed.

The two months it takes to train up the well-presented person who takes care of themselves will pay off in spades so the office environment isn't made weird by the turboautist for the next who-knows-how-many years they'd be working there.

It doesn't matter what you know off the top of your head. You need to demonstrate that you have a rigorous problem solving ability that will find you the solution. That's what they're looking for, nobody gives a fuck that you can identify all the layers of the OSI model or whatever useless trivia you know that you think constitutes talent.
>>

The truth is that IT is slowly fazing out the more easier it becomes to setup servers and to monitor them, the future is companies hiring contract workers so they can fire their IT at anytime if they feel they're slacking off and sending helpdesk to India. I would suggest learning one trade and specializing since more and more kids are growing up with technology you can always be easily replaced by some young punk accepting a much lower wage that can just google what you do.

Hard to say whee the industry is headed. The boon in web/mobile might be a bubble that just bursts in a few years, but I think if you're truly passionate about it, it will be a good choice for the forseeable future. I think it's at least worth giving it a shot.

I guess you're going to have to move to get a job somewhere where that isn't the case. It might mean going to the middle of buttfuck nowhere for a few years, but is that any worse than working as a forklift driver?
>>
>>60121631
I've been applying to jobs in other cities/towns but they always only hire local, I guess I could move with nothing lined up but if it doesn't work out I'm fucked and there goes my savings. Also I live in Canada and there's nowhere to really go for work because the entire country has a shit economy.

I'm just gonna go back to school to study something else and hopefully get hired straight out of school, if you don't get hired straight out of school you're basically fucked.
>>
>>60121591
>complaining about making $18/hr
i hope you get malware.
>>
>>60121717

>>
>>60121717
Yeah that $35k/year is real good. One more raise and maybe I can afford to eat 3 meals a day.
>>
>>60121717
That's terrible. In Canada living costs can be quite high, factoring the rest of your bills required to just send in job applications and keep the lights running you're really not living on a lot. Especially so if you're putting part of your paycheck into savings which you really should be doing in [current year]. Certainly shithouse if you ever want a gf who doesn't work or something.

First search, literally for "IT", only 1 year required.
>>
You guys do realize that the whole "over 9000 years experience required" thing isn't really required right? If you interview well and know your shit they may just hire you without any experience. It won't happen every time though which is why you apply to every job you find.

Go to community/state college. If you don't have income half the time the government will pay YOU to attend.

The fucked up thing is since my family is military my high school diploma is from another state, so even the sate I'm living in now won't give me in state tuition, literally 20k a semester for community college.
