I actively try to avoid workplaces like this. I'm in the Northeast US and these places don't really exist outside the largest cities.

My current gig is writing Solidworks addins and other tools for a small engineering firm. I get an entire room to myself.

I have a friend who drives 30 minutes along backroads to get to a place where he writes engine diagnostics software. He gets a big ass cubicle and all the autonomy he wants or needs, as long as shit gets in on time.

"Open" workplaces will reduce your efficacy and imply a lack of respect from the top brass.

How does one get into engineering software like cars or medical tools?

I'm not writing embedded software; I write automation and manipulation tools and new functionality for mechanical engineers modeling shit, using version control, etc. Autodesk Inventor and Dassault EPDM are missing a shitload of functionality and a lot of it needs to be written in. A lot of the BOM processing and such can get wild too.

I know a few people who do embedded. The friend that does engine diagnostics showed up to a job fair while he was still at school and made a good first impression with the company. They gave him an internship on the spot and that turned into a full time job.

Practice for what you want to do. I'm currently trying to pick up COBOL, DB2, MVS, etc. for working on mainframe software. If you want to go embedded, get a solid background in C and start working on electronics as a hobby. A college degree will help, but substantial personal projects can get you way farther than you would think.
