What is Python good for? Is it slow?
PyPy with multiprocessing will get you to near C speeds.
It's a general language that is in desperate need of static typing.

It's good for applications where you aren't cpu bound, like servers, where most of the time is spent in I/O; for specialized scientific computing and research, thanks to packages compiler in C++/C/FORTRAN that get called from python seamlessly, allowing fast iterations on ideas and approaches; and much more applications I'm sure I don't know about.

Hoooo haaaa
Good God y'all

Its good for introducing people to actual languages.

Getting shit done quick.
If you look at the CIA and NSA leaks they've got a lot of Python tools for deploying exploits and monitoring their botnets.

Python is good for when you don't need to care about the speed of the code you're writing. Most of the time, you'll just be gluing pieces of other people's code in other languages together where speed matters and adding some logic on top of it to make it do exactly what you want. If you're thinking about if you should use shell sort or quick sort, you clearly don't need to be using Python.
Python programmers are usually pretty cool guys, especially when compared to 99% of PHP (or 70% of Perl) programmers, who could not implement an interpreter if their life was dependent on it, yet somehow have this sense of elitism deep within their hearts. I've noticed more Python programmers have math-related degrees than tech-related degrees.
I guess "working with non-annoying people" counts as a thing Python is good for.

Since it'll keep their indents decent yet is relatively easy to use, I mostly agree, but you should probably just teach them something like LISP and yell at them when they don't indent for effectively the same result. Maybe Ocaml would be the best for them long-term.
I use it a ton at work for batch work like renaming files based on, say, the video codec or automatically building logs.
Since it's a script and not compiled, it's extremely fast to maintain.

It's good for trolling neckbeard computer wizards because normies can use it w/o requiring intimate computer knowledge.

Hastily written scripts of 300 lines or less that glue a larger project together.

Its marvellous for writing things quickly and fairly easily run anywhere
