If you like Qt, install KDE.

If you like GTK, install GNOME.

If you like GTK but think GNOME has buttons literally designed for autistic iPads, use Cinnamon.

If you don't know what any of this means, install GNOME or Cinnamon depending on your thoughts on the previous statement.

A billion dollars? That's really cool!

Only problem is a majority of customers run that operating system headless & RHEL license bux aren't really put toward desktop usability tests compared to Microsoft in the lead up to Windows 95.

KDE
+ well integrated with many applications, customizable, powerful, modern, dolphin, konsole, krunner etc are great
- buggy, resource hungry

Cinnamon
+ intuitive, customizable, polished,
- buggy, a Windows rip-off

Gnome
+ easy, very stable, modern, just werks, loads of extensions
- annoying extension management, rather limited in its features, looks like Fisher Price

Gnome.
If you dont have a good reason to use either of the others, gnome is the biggest and the most flexible.

Also ubuntu is gonna do great things for gnome, if nothing else than userbase.
>>

KDE and Cinnamon are both fine, pick whatever suits you better. Maybe MATE even.

Don't touch GNOME 3 if you can avoid it.

That is actually pretty nice. I use arch and what I liked most about the wm only setup is that I have full control over what exactly is installed and how everything is set up.
But with most DEs there is no documentation. I don't even know wheater GNOME uses a compositor or how the background image is set. And why right now it isn't showing for me anymore.

KDE is no more resource hungry (300-400mb after boot in arch), and is very feature rich, nice aesthetic, and is STABLE (yes, it is no longer buggy, months of using it and no bug from a long time)
i would recommend anyone doubting to just try it
also, the screenshot utility and dolphin are just awesome

Why do so many people prefer Gnome over KDE? The only reasoning people give are outdated memes like "KDE crashes so much" which is a PEBKAC problem or or "KDE uses too many resources" when Gnome uses more. Gnome requires a bunch of ricing for it to not look and function like shit while KDE is the best looking and most functional DE out of the box.

If you are a capitalist, God fearing, America loving man, you'll stop using Comunix and go with Windows or Mac.

Open source is communism.

I fail to see how that is a bad thing.

It's bad because they all break and have to be re-written every time they update GNOME

>>60061254

Gnome
>>
It's worth noting that if you have a touchscreen input or convertible laptop/tablet, or 4k,you're pretty shit out of luck unless you use Gnome. If you had habits of tweaking every fucking system detail to your precise liking, use kde, otherwise, I highly recommend XFCE as an all around desktop.
You can theme qt and gtk to look strikingly similar.
>>
What are some must haves for making Gnome not look like shit aside from Tweak Tools and Dash to Dock?
>>
>>600733
If you're in to android, check out the adapta or paper themes, if you like the windows 7 taskbar, dash to panel is way nicer than dash to dock
>>
>>60073357

Xfce i3 then perhaps kde

This. I tried gnome a year and a half back and I couldn't see the point of making my machine harder to use than my phone.

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?
That sounds preposterous to me.
If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.
Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.
Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer from start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.
I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.
