X230
T430i, except upgraded to top of the line T430 levels (except the wi-fi card, fuck whitelisting)

I use the X230 regularily, the portability is a must for my work. It's also the sweet spot between portability, power and durability.
I'm an automation engineer. Working in a factory is the perfect chance for having your laptop commpletely destroyed by the end of the day, so durability is needed. Small size for lugging the bastard around the factory floor. Better graphics power compared with the X220 for CAD shit on the go.
I actually bought a X260 before, but sold it. More power and far better battery with the extended options, but the durability just isn't the same.

The T430 is just too big to fit snuggly inside a random machine I'm working on.

sold a fully loaded t420 for $380 with the *30 series dock.

He lived in town so i didnt even have to waste money on shipping, it was originally $370 but he didnt feel like going to the bank to split a twenty, so i got an extra $10.

Also got a new job, it's been a good week senpai.

Side note:
Anyone know how to stop the screen on a w530 from auto dimming when i sit in the sun, without dragging my power cord outside?

Doesn't make any fucking sense, hurr de durr you're on battery and it's bright, lets just dim the fuck out of your display.

my t420 never did this so i'm assuming it's the thinkpad and not windows.

i might just eventually buy another t420......

That is the reason it feels so fast. Not the win10 installation. To get it going even faster, install some lightweight linux distro with systemd.

Hey /tpg/,
the purchasing advice pastebin is kill, so I'll ask directly. Which Thinkpad would be best for dicking around in Windows 98. I have a Windows 98SE desktop, but I need to clean out. I was thinking the T23, since it has a dvd/floppy swappable bay. and takes 1 gb ram. Any thoughts?
>>
>>60057174
Whatever you can find cheapest. I'm partial to the 600X but that's cause I own one.

Got a T420s for $150, not sure if price was good or bad, but I'm really liking it so far.

Only problem i have atm is that it disconnects from the wifi more often than other laptops I've had. Don't know what that's about?

Any upgrade suggestions? Was thinking of adding another 240gb or maybe a 480 gb ssd instead of the disc drive, but I'm not sure how feasible that is.
>>
Currently I go between a surface pro 1 and a t510 for schoolwork (I am a graduate student studying in the humanities, so when I'm away from my apartment I use the former for reading articles and such and the latter for writing papers). I bought the surface pro last october and while it's been great for reading, the screensize and mediocre keyboard make it a chore to write or do any serious work on. On the flipside, the t510 is great for writing, but it is so damn bulky and heavy that it really is not ideal for my usage case.

I would really like to replace both of these devices with just one (maybe keep the t510 for backup) and I am thinking about the x220, 30, or 40.

Could any anon tell me about their experiences with any of these smaller options? How is battery life overall? How heavy are these machines? Currently I am deciding between one of these machines or a 2013 google pixel. Both would end up running debian or ubuntu.
>>
>>60060072
Pretty good find considering it has the 1600x900 display. I'd investigate into that wifi issue to see if it's actually an issue and to replace the card if so. I wouldn't invest much money at all into an older thinkpad such as that one but if you're not a poorfag like I am then sure put another ssd into it. I'm 99% sure that you just have to get a drive caddy for it off ebay. I'm not 100% sure if the T420s has a 9-cell battery option but if it does it is definitely worth it to get it if you can find an OEM one.

>>60060088
Speaking as someone who is on 6 semesters with an X220, it is a tad bulky for today's standards, especially if it has a 9-cell battery. If I were in your position I'd stalk ebay for a T450s.

>tfw always feel weird giving thinkpad suggestions because to some degree I'm increasing the price by even a tiny insignificant bit for when I have the money to upgrade

>>
>>60059416
I have x230t but I don't think touch input inaccurate. The pen is though, on the corners. Tablet mode is comfy for reading and movies, but only in certain positions since it's bulky.

I don't regret buying it personally. If you use linux there's thinkpad-scripts that will switch the touch input and screen automatically when tablet mode it activated.
>>
>>60060088

I have a x230 (only for a week or so, so take with a grain of salt) but coming from a MacBook Pro 13", it's definitely a bit more heavy (esp. since I have a 9 cell battery) but it's definitely not unreasonable. I have little qualms about carrying it around.

So I got my T420 about a month ago or so, and have been really satisfied with it so far, but today it's now giving me "Plugged In, Not Charging"
I read that this is some common Lenovo issue, and I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Windows battery drivers (Win7 by the way), but I'm still getting it.
I tried to use the docking station and the AC cord but still not charging.
In this past month I've been putting a lot of use in this battery (commonly run it to under 15% and occasionally have run it until it's died), so I'm wondering if it's just time for a new one, but what I've read online has led me to believe this is a problem with the laptop.

Intel Core i7-6500U Processor (4MB Cache, up to 3.10GHz)
15.6" FHD IPS (1920x1080),Touch,WWAN
8GB PC3-12800 DDR3L 1600MHz SODIMM
NVIDIA Quadro M500M 2GB
256 GB Solid State Drive, SATA3 OPAL2.0 - Capable
ThinkPad Battery 3 cell Li-Polymer (44Whr) Front
6 Cell Li-Ion Battery 47WH Cylindrical Rear
65W AC Adapter - US(2pin)

At the price (with the discount in the OP) of $1,061.28

Does /g/ approve? Should I be buying this, or should I wait and try to find a better deal on ebay or something? Is it even worth it, buying a new thinkpad? It is a classic, it has the timeless ThinkPad design language, it has the glorious IBM logo, ThinkPad quality, etc etc.

I mean I personally would try not to jew up my linux partition up so I'd personally go for the 250 gb one and do a 125/125 split between windows.
that said youre probably keeping windows for productivity or gaymen which I'd still recommend the 250 gb one and doing a 200/50 split for more storage.
Honestly I'd go for nothing under 50gb linux but if I am getting a ssd I'd definetly want windows on it with a good deal of storage
>>
>>60059025
I mean 300 mb/s is still pretty good compared to your spinner. personally I cant get over 60 mb/s with my spinner. if it's really an issue you could always throw away your optical drive and slam in a ssd instead and get full sata 3

honestly I'd go big or go home. a W530 would've been a better desktop replacement. The X220T is good tho

I used to carry 17" desktop replacements then I swapped over to a 15.6" then to a 14" T430 and I'm considering picking up a x2xxT or maybe just a X2xx. Theres something more comfy about it, being able to take it to bed and just having it lay on top of you and not feel like youre getting crushed after the third hour.

I also had the same approach about ULV and having dgpus as well but then I noticed I actually liked not being tangled in wires and not being roasted in bed while being able to shit post and listen to music

dude that hasn't been an issue since like 2010

depending on how much gaming or cad work you do neither or both. Theyre more power hungry than your igpu but theyre much more powerful. but I wouldnt call the igpu weak at all. Even my intel hd 4000 from 2013 can handle a good deal of gaming like overwatch

If you wanted to be a dodgy bastard, you could try to make a piece of plastic just so all the right pins connect

Otherwise, just follow the hardware maintenance manual. iirc after the bezel and keyboard, you just unplug and carefully remove the power connector. The hardware maintenance manual will take you through it step by step and your only nightmare will be dealing with tearing the bezel off

So... T440p seems like the next step up from T430 in terms of computers on the downtrend of being dumb cheap.

Here's the quick rundown:

This is the "T430" of fourth gen - the T440/T440s is a ULV, avoid since at that point you should just get an X240.

Garbage TrackPad is replacable with a good one quite easily.

PGA946 socket means it is Socketed / Upgradable

- i7-4702MQ to chill at 37W
- i7-4910MQ for 47W upgrade
- i7-4930MX for 57W MEME TIER HOUSEFIRE upgrades

The T440p actually went all the way up to 4900MQ on Lenovo's site (47W), but after its' launch we got the 4910 MQ and the 4702MQ, which is basically a 4700MQ with a 10W lower TDP (37, down from 47). This was previously only possible with 47W, which means nowadays we can get a nice quad core and actually get MORE battery out of it than back when the laptop launched.

100Wh battery available, which will couple very nicely with a 4702MQ @ 37W TDP. T430 goes to 94Wh @ 45W TDP. Going off comparing the Wh to the TDP alone makes the T440p last ~29% longer.

16GB RAM, takes T420/T430 RAM just fine.

FHD SCREEN. FHD SCREEN. FHD SCREEN. These models have the glorious IPS displays that T420/T430 owners kill for, and we wait fucking months/years to get our hands on a kit.

T440p auctions have an INSANE price range for completed auctions, going anywhere from as little as $150 to $500 for fully functioning units (yes, the $150 was a recently sold fully functioning unit). People don't know what it's worth, or don't want to pay a lot because of what a mess the trackpad was. As always, I recommend buying a working unit sans HDD / RAM.

And finally, get this. THE WHITELIST DOESN'T WORK IN THE T440P! You can install ANY WiFi card on BIOS versions 2.32 - 2.36 because of a bug in the BIOS checking the whitelist, AND YOU CAN DOWNGRADE BIOS IF NEEDED! NO FLASHING LIKE ON THE T430!

I've been impressed even with Linuxbabby Ubuntu on an SSD + X201 Tablet. Boots up super fast. Takes 3 minutes to shut down for some reason I can't be bothered to investigate or fix.

>>
>>60066745
The 14" 1080p IPS is mediocre as far as IPSs go, doesn't manage near full sRGB gamult which is pretty pathetic.

The Alienware panel you can drop into the T430 on the other hand has full sRGB and no possibility of IPS induced backlight glow.

T440p is a non starter, although I do like the CPU. I'm currently planning my upgrade in a year or two's time when I'll really need more processing power than an 3520M. The construction of the new thinkpads is shite, but if I get an XPS15 it's too big and it has not trackpoint. I'll probably end up getting some kind of dell precision or what have you.
>>
>>60067644
You don't need to use the included FHD panel, it supports better panels.

yes, but with 1920x1080 you'd need scaling to be able to see everything nicely on a 12" screen
for 15" screens 1080p is great, but for a 12" screen anything past 1600x900 gets too small to comfortably read.
and scaling in windows is shit for most things
web browsers work perfectly, but most other programs will run into issues in some way

re thermal paste it, if that doesn't work then that's just how they work normally.
disabling turbo boost can help with temps, but once you start slowing the processor more than it's stock clock speeds you will run into performance issues.

Sounds like the step down transformer is blowing a fuse when you're using it if it's "dimming out" instead of abruptly powering down - this usually happens when power is slowly lowered instead of completely removed all at once. If you're skilled, you can resolder new plugs on it (requires accessing the motherboard and knowing how to use a soldering iron).

The listing for this thing said it was 1920x1200. Speccy says it's 1680x1050. Is it going to "just werk" after a few Windows Updates, or am I being taken for a fool?

The ebay listing said no refunds but if I was lied to ebay would take my side, right?
>>
>>60071761
Yes, if you were lied to they will refund your money.

Thanks for the reply/ For context this is a W500.

If it just has the lower resolution this is unfortunate. It's in such good condition it seems unused.

I have a T440, I want to upgrade this shitty fucking touchpad to the 3 button model. I see plenty of cheap chick shit ones on ebay with good reviews, will those work fine? Is there anyone here who's made the change themselves and could point me in the direction of one that they know isn't a flimsy piece of shit?
I mean for fucks' sake, the touchpad on my chromebook is leagues ahead of this awful mess, and the chromebook one has deadzones at the bottom.

>install a windows VM in linux

Am I a complete idiot?
>>
>>60071813
You can pick up a T500 FHD screen and swap it in. Contact the buyer and tell him what happened. I'm sure he'd rather pay the 30 dollars for the FHD than have to hassle with a refund.

I actually have a spare screen (with two stuck pixels), but fuck. I was sniping ebay specifically for a 1080p Thinkpad in my pricerange, so this lie really fucked my shit up. I am not impressed.

Putting in my old HDD didn't make it "just werk". The condition is excellent in every regard so I'm pretty sad, since all my torrents are 1080p for nothing on this machine.
>>
Can I get a decent one for < 140€?
>>
>>60072516
Honestly, the cheapest way I found is to get a t520 and swap in a FHD screen. You can get a t520 with a busted screen for 60 dollars, and the FHD screen shouldn't be more than $40. You sacrifice a bit with the cheaper GPU in the t520 over the w520, but it's not an issue for most people.

When you get a chance, swap in a SSD, you'd be amazed at the performance improvement.
>>
>>60055168
Ironically unironically facebook
>>
>>60072555
What do you mean? the T520 is 16:9; the W500 is 16:10. None of the resources I have coincide with that (besides my HDD), so I'd be starting a whole new endeavor if I went for that.

I'll keep it in mind, though. I just wanted to watch 1080p anime on a Thinkpad without spending too much.

Are you able to buy screens on ebay? And how much window shopping is necessary to find a T520 with a busted screen? I can do the waiting once I have a laptop, which this disappointment was meant to cover.
>>
>>60072403
So razer has the only real solution right now then.
Hope they figure out how to make the battery life comparable to ULV.
>>
>>60072639
Sorry, I got distracted and switched up the models.

The *520 screens aren't compatible with the *500 units, you're right.

You can do the same with a t500 and the compatible FHD screen. It should be very easy to find a T500 with a broken screen. They shouldn't be more than 50USD if you're in the states. I don't see it taking more than a week for one to pop up online.

The t520 with a FHD would be 100-120USD for the t520 with a broken screen and the FHD replacement. It'll definitely be more future proof, but I understand if it's more than you're willing to spend to watch your waifu.
>>
>>60072667
You can go the eGPU route.
>>
>>60072712
Cheers. I'm already knee-deep in this mess, so I may want to deal with this first, but the life of a Thinkpad owner is really sniping for this type of stuff, so I'll keep my eye open.
>>
Got a T430S, viewing angle on the screen is smoking hot garbage. How difficult is replacing it with an IPS panel, and how much can I expect to spend on one?

>>
>>60072831
Yeah, I'd return the w500 or get the seller to pay for a $30-40 FHD screen. The t500 will last forever if you're just watching your waifu on it, but the t520 will be a better unit for the future.
>>
>>60072855
Delete it and update BIOS. This is unnecessary if you're running *nix though because the Lenovos Spyware only works on Windows.
>>
Quick, T450 vs T460 vs T470. What did they change?
>>
>>60072880
Thought so. Already updated bios. Thanks!
>>
>>60071983
It is the one with the 14.1"

There is the T400 for 10 more dollars, but aren't the ones that had the IBM logo sturdier? I look at the t400 and doesn't give me the same comfort, idk.

What did you mean by seven-digit type?
>>
>>60073692
A 14-inch model won't be IPS like the 15-inch models, but it could still be a respectable 1400x1050 panel. If it's 1024x768, it's not worth more than $60.

There's a type number on every Thinkpad that identifies its factory specs, located on the bottom and formatted as TYPE 2007-CTO or similar. If you're looking at an online listing, it might be listed somewhere in the description if there's no picture of the bottom.

It is cheaper to get an M14x display if you have a 900p display

otherwise, you have to find the mod chip which is $60+ and an FHD panel $50 to $90, and maybe some chassis modifying.

I use the E130 daily and have done for around a year or so. Its not a bad machine but no, its not a 'true' ThinkPad. The X230 was a recent acquisition. I don't really want to use it because it was literally brand new and even smells it. I have the autistic need to preserve it. I want to buy or make from spares, a X220 one day, or another X230.
