This baka desu senpai. New exploits are found every day. You shouldn't have to disable critical security updates just to make the operating system usable. That's just a bad workaround for a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place.
>>
>>60051092
I've never had problems with software security in the last 15 years, might have something to do with me not visiting dodgy sites and opening unknown .exes. And even if I AM vulnerable, what am I ultimately risking? Becoming part of a "botnet" or mining operation? I'd take notice momentarily because I know every running process and normal system loads by heart.

Why do people still do this? I keep a Windows 10 virtual machine just in case I absolutely need to use a Win10-only application, but I only use Linux and occasionally a Win7 virtual machine for my day-to-day productivity, browsing, and even gaming. For over two years, 95% of my computing has been done in a Linux environment, and I'm not a developer or neckbeard.
>>

You should at least be installing the "security only" updates. You have to grab them through the online update catalog. They're not cumulative, so you have to grab the ones for each month and install them individually.

Arrived at work at 8, turned on my computer as usual.

Windows 10 decided to start an upgrade, which lasted a full hour. No work actually done until 9:04.

There's absolutely no valid reason why it would upgrade at startup instead of before shutdown last Friday when I turned it off for the weekend.

Turn off auto restart in the windows task scheduler. Windows has a tendency to re-enable this setting if it's disabled for too long. To fix this, you have to rename a file in the system32 folder. It's simply called "reboot" with no file type. Rename it to reboot.bak. Updates will still download and install on their own, but windows will no longer auto-restart.

https://betanews.com/2017/01/31/stop-windows-10-rebooting-after-updates/

Remember to always make a fresh backup of your windows install kids. With MS forcing updates down your throat, never know when said updates will fuck your machine. I cannot believe this is honestly the state of windows now. What happened to MS since XP? Or windows 7? When did they start seeing their users as nothing but data mining prospects?
>>
>>60053552
Around the time that they decided EVERYTHING needed to fall for the software-as-a-service meme. Including your fucking OS. Not allowed to just own and have a thing anymore. Because you see, MS didn't make any money from it when I installed Windows 7 last week from a disc I got in 2010. The idea is to turn customers into constant revenue streams, not just single purchases here and there.

>With MS forcing updates down your throat, never know when said updates will fuck your machine.
It has happened to me several times already, I don't know if I'm that unlucky or what, but I don't remember ever having such problems with 7.
Windows Update is also broken on fresh installs of 7 and 8.1, you have to manually download some updates first to get it working.
It's depressing to think that this is what the most popular OS family in the world is like to use.

That's because Windows was never designed to turn your computer into a glorified gaming console. It's an operating system for working. It needs popups to inform the user of different things. It's not the responsibility of the operating system to help you do well at video games.

Let's just excuse the fact that Microsoft created a graphical API exclusively for its operating system, then claimed it would not support OpenGL on Vista. It's not like they wanted to hoard all the games or anything.

>>60055765
What you say is correct. Nevertheless, Windows was never designed specifically for games. They add support for games as an afterthought.

Few advices.

Don't use Insider builds.
Don't use the Home version for forced restarts-
Don't set the region to US because ads and other stupid shit.

I don't even have a prodcut key and I've been using W10 for almost a year and a half now and I never seen any ad or other shit like that. On other machines I made the mistake of installing with the US region and it pre-installed Candy Crush and two or three games, placed some stupid apps on the start menu and started showing me ads. But I guess amerikikes deserve it for being good goyim and fucking everything up all the time.

A week to learn? You must learn awfully slow don't you? Took me 2 days to adjust after 22 years of Windows. Haven't missed it once.

43 years on Win10 here. Haven't missed it once after adjusting to Linux in 10 seconds flat.
>>
>>60050917
I don't know, but it pisses me off in Windows 7 too, I guess I'm never going to install updates if you're going to tell me to pull the plug every couple of hours, you piece of shit

I should be able to tell Windows to fuck off and have it fuck off until I tell it to not fuck off.

I use Windows 7, I just don't update until I feel like turning my computer off.
>>
>>60060488
It's 30 days, don't know if they changed but when I activated it was 30, hence why it's only updating on 17/may

Sounds like working for your computer rather than the other way around.

Why can't Windows get updates with zero downtime right, like Linux?

what the fuck does that even mean

Easiest to just disable the winupdate service 2bh, slav 0day exploits are less harmful than Microsoft automatic updates

>>BSOD- It is NEVER acceptable to let the entire operating system crash when a single application causes a problem, yet Windows allows it.
I have to disagree. If it is something criticial, it might be preferred to have the kernel panic than to potentially get data loss.
Purely user-space stuff or however it works though should never really cause any oopses or panics, only system stuff really should.
Does this happen on Windows or is it just that windows is pretty liberal in what they put in the kernel?
>>still uses registry (LOL)
A lot of applications on linux will litter random directories in your home directory (./, ./local, .config, etc) with configurations
sure it is better than the registry, but still

let us be honest, systemd, firefox, and others does this too

Why does Windows 10 interrupt whatever your doing just to install updates? They should've made it like; Download the update and install it when the computer is shutting down.
>>
>>60055307
Unless I don't want updates? What's the issue I'm just fcking myself over by being lazy. I don't see why MS has anything to with me not updating.
>>
>>60063482
I'm just sitting here picturing a Microsoft dev wishing for the public to accept his poorly written updates. When they don't, he angrily posts on /g/ to vent his rage upon the world.

The problem is that you shouldn't have to set "I'm busy" hours and shit

The computer is a tool. I tell the computer when it can update not the other way around
>>
>>60051007
For me personally, I might abandon windows completely and go fully towards the linux ways. Slowly it's becoming more supported with things like games. I hate it but there's really no good sounding future with me using windows after 7. It's a real shame I started all the way back on 3.1
>>
>>60050917
because the newest version of the tracking software disguised as an update can't wait for your worthless work
>>
>>60067349
Actually the problem is the "autistic screeching." It's kind of weird to be talking about what I should or shouldn't have to do on an arbitrary system. This is how it happens to be set up. In that context I do have to set hours for it to silence those notifications.

And just like in the cartoon, I do tell it when it can update. I make that decision within the context provided to me because I'm not the one who designed the tool. Disagreeing with those design decisions doesn't give license to accuse W10 of "autistic screeching" when it does nothing of the sort.
>>
>>60051007
The general public has been fine with sticking to Windows 7 and XP over 8, 8.1, and 10. I doubt a lack of developer support will make much of an impact on them.

I doubt that. Ever since Windows 8, the biggest critics of Microsoft have been Windows users.

It is a non-issue for the intended market of Home edition a.k.a normies who normally asleep when it normally updates.

The updates take no more than 10-15 minutes on a modern system.

Get the Pro Edition if you feel that 10-15 minutes takes up too much of your time.
