Can /g/ explain why Windows 10 is bad without using memes such as "muh privacy" and "dem ebil jews are stealing muh porn folders"?
>>
>>60039084
It's not "bad"

So much as it's a further step in the wrong direction and 8.1 is better.
>>
MS are getting their act together but my main problems with it are related to the inconsistent UI, two control panels and bugs related to said shit AI.

I work on a help desk and I've had to repair more windows 10 installs, where the explorer process claimed to be running but the start menu was completely inoperable, then I would care to remember.

>Reasons why windows sucks
NTFS is by far the worst modern file system
You can't change the Desktop environment or the window manager
It for some weird reason becomes slower the more programs you install
It doesn't have a package manager
It's more prone to viruses
Full Disk encryption is much worse than with any other platform
Less secure overall even when discounting botnet shit
That's all I can think of of the top of my head but there are many more.

They're putting more between the user and the machine. The shiny new GUI panels for the control panel and shit like that is great for normies but not for us autists who want to have to know what's going on underneath. You're never going to crack open the cmd and start editing config files on win 10.

Basically, windows 10 =/= Arch Linux.
It just works. If it ain't broken, you can't fix it and it's not interesting.

It's not that bad. But I do find that I have to do a system cleanup every 6 months or so. Check updates, defrag, uninstall programs I don't use anymore, look through the startup programs list, etc. But I also crack my machine open a couple times a year to clean the dust out.

The business model has changed to 'software as a service'. This isn't too bad by itself, but the consequence of the change meant certain items such as Windows Update, various programmes, and advertising are delivered in a way that takes much of the previous control that users had, and revokes it.

There's also that hardware bullshit, too, but that's intuitively fucking gross.

To simply sum it, other than the privacy concerns, the biggest reason I think most people abhor windows 10 is the "Microsoft knows what's best for you, so we'll handle everything" mentality.

The "you can turn windows defender off, but if it's off for a while we'll turn it back on automatically" mentality (pic related).

For the sake of "User security and ease of use" they're made everything they possibly can opt-out rather than opt-in, and often times "opting out" means running third party programs to manually disable services and registry edits which completely breaks other features.

And the worst part is? They just love to undo every change you've spent numerous painstaking hours making with every windows update without telling you... Updates that you can't choose not to get or indefinitely delay without going out of your way to disable windows update services in general... Removing the ability for you to see when there are updates and pick/choose.

main reasons:
1- having to restart the system to apply changes (drivers, program installations et cetera)
2- having to wait for the system to finish updating so it can actually turn off/reboot for further usage
3- slower system responsiveness compared to fresh install once multiple update patches have been installed
4- bad software design eg: explorer.exe is actually tied to the taskbar so if your file manager stops responding it crashes the taskbar with it
5- inconsistency eg: powershell and CMD, two control panels and the list goes on
6- high amount of viruses due to the OS marketshare
irrelevant reasons that people still bring up:
1 - UI sucks (you can tweak it a lot if you know what you're doing)
2 - Telemetry (it all comes down to how patient you are at following guides on how to make Windows reasonably more trustworthy, even if won't turn out to be perfect)
3- fragmentation: now really true unless you're using an old hard drive that would be prone to failing anyways

Easiest way to see is just to use another computer (e.g. a mac) and see how much better it is in UI and and the like. You'll realize after about 5 minutes how less bloated and more consistent the UI is.

e.g. Apps on Windows
>Desktop Shortcut
>Quick launch shortcut on the start bar
>In start menu

That's not counting search plus the actual location in program files or whatever.

Meanwhile on OSX
>All apps are under "launchpad"
>Can be put on the dock for quick access

Linux usually fine too, I'm using OSX as an example because there are tons of looks for Linux, don't get triggered faggots.

People use Windows for years so they get used to the bloat and redundancy. Once you try something else you realize just how shit its become. Windows is like a messy room, it crept up up on you so you don't realize how shit it really is, because your used to it.

and both of them suffer from being bloated as fuck

Wangblows isn't shit, it's perfectly fine for the average PC user and while nearly as outrageous they don't charge as high a (false)pricemark as Apple. That said Macs have their uses too in media development.

Fact is every OS is fine. It's just that Linux let's you fully customize your experience should you have the patience to learn how. And the free software game be poppin.

>taskbar locking shortcuts is faster than a Mac though?
Dunno. Don't think so but I was talking more about UI.

There are things people learn to deal with on Windows, that don't really have to be that way. It's been like this forever so we're all used to it.
Like the fact deleting a shortcut doesn't delete the app.

On Windows there is a real lack of a place to just see all the applications. For some reason, the best place to actually see shit is the "uninstall a program" list. The start bar used to be the go to area, but it's too clogged up with shit now.

On install, sometimes they create shortcuts on desktop, sometimes some other place. There's just no consistency to where things are. I don't even know what's on my desktop(Windows) because shit is all over the place. Even in the file system, some things are in Program Files, others are not. Basic apps like notepad for example, are elsewhere. For all I know Candy Crush is somewhere on there. I don't know where shit is on my windows desktop while on my mac I have a good idea of what I do and don't have and I can delete it.

>>
>>60049735
That's your fault though. You can customize the task bar (the UI bar) to house shortcuts that show the icon of the program, hell I remember being able to right click menu to incog with chromium.

Shits going on your desktop because it specifically asks you at the end of an install "would you like to create a desktop icon?"

Again, I run Debian Jessie and I agree with you in saying the Windows UI is meh, but let's talk issues that don't include key instances of operator error.
>>
>>60049912
When I said I don't know whats on my desktop I meant "Desktop PC". Not the desktop desktop.

I don't have any problem, I was meaning to point out the lack of consistency on where things go. A normie could install an app and not uncheck the options. Now he's got shit on his task bar, a shortcut in the start menu, a desktop shortcut too. And none of them are the actual app, which is probably in Program Files or Program Files x86. I mean damn, no wonder "it just werks" became an Apple meme.

When you install on a Mac it just goes in fucking applications.
>>
>>60043606
Reversing changes and settings I made was the reason I switched permanently to Linux on my notebook. Some things were just annoying (like that they changed back standard apps like Edge) others were quite serious (e.g. turning secure/fastboot back on, so that i couldn't dual-boot into linux installation ). At that point I realized, that in their new business modell (software as a service) they don't care about the user or that the system "just werks", they just force you to use their shit with all they got.

And that's the core problem of Win10.
So why you're still using Windows, when Linux is a viable alternative?

That's a lie. It's pretty much instantaneous, however, it's limited to the installed application list, history, store, and such - it's not an actual file search.

Anon, I've been working on a Mac for half a year. I probably know more about Mac GUI in terms of tools and shortcuts more than the majority of life-long Mac users, and yet - it's shit. Slow, unresponsive and unintuitive shit, that can't handle stress and shit's up GUI thread whenever it runs low on RAM.

Have the thought of you just not being used to Windows' GUI never came to your mind? Maybe it's you who needs to spend more than 5 minutes figuring out how it works?

I switched away from Mac at the first opportunity - I'm much more productive on Windows, and that includes developing for Unix systems.

I admit, other OS use different wording.

You don't know what you're talking about.
When on Linux a program crashes (that happend like two times in the last 12 months) it is always possible to easily determinate it or change the focus to another program. While on Windows I had to shutdown my PC, because team fortress stopped working

Linux is not, and never will be, a viable alternative outside of basic web browsing.

That post is funny. I guess they haven't used Windows before?

Definitely running a dark theme right now on win10 1703

>>Start Panel is gigantic, even after you change settings
Alternatively, I don't know how to right click icons

>>X has stopped responding.
Other OS' do similar things though. Modern Linux DEs will tell you something very similar, while OSX will just give you a spinning beachball of non-meaning.

The start search thing lacking file search is a very good point though. OSX has historically had a very good search tool in Spotlight. I've honestly just started using Everything and Keypirinha for search over Windows' search.

>>No workspaces, can't quickly press a button to hide my porn windows.
Hasn't used Win10, this is one of the best features it has over its predecessors.

>>No package manager. Have to open a browser
This is a valid complaint but not how they push it. Windows sucks at cleaning up after uninstalls, you've got to use something like Revo to do proper cleanup.
Though for the installing side there is always Chocolatey. Dunno how robust it is these days though.

You're comparing a random application window to a fullscreen game. Either way it's obvious you don't know how to use a keyboard.

>You don't know what you're talking about.
Anon, I know more about Linux than you do, and I don't even use it outside of WSL and VMs. Something tells me, I'm perfectly aware what I'm talking about.

I don't think I ever got a full freeze on Win10, but what you're referring to is a freeze of an application that takes control over your graphical output (aka fullscreen game). It's not that everything is frozen, it's just you can't see anything but the frozen application.
I believe Win10 works around this shit, but the situation from the fresh info you're providing can be usually worked around by locking your PC/making it sleep and then going back.

I have used Windows since I was young.
I have had a Macbook less than a month.

I feel I have an easier time with my Mac than my Windows PC.

Microsoft is spyware at this point.

>turn off send shit to microsoft
>it still sends shit

Idk what my macbook is doing, maybe nothing but at least it has the courtesy not to pretend I can turn off sending shit if it's going to do it anyway. Windows 10 is like Bonzi Buddy at this point.
I hear for some people Candy Crush reinstalled itself. Of course they don't even list it under programs and features because it's a "system app". :^)

I aint an Apple shill. I won't say your experience isn't valid. But all I can say is for me, OSX is better.
>>
>>60050544
Good goy, make sure to sign in with your Apple ID for the full MacOS experience
>>
>>60050486
>OSX has historically had a very good search tool in Spotlight
Yeah, until you put it under stress. When it has 90% of its resources free, the search is good. When you're using it for the only thing it's supposed to be good in (it's a Unix system with a GUI! Gotta go dev!) every single function in it becomes horrendously slow.

Technically speaking, when you're doing installs and uninstalls properly and don't use shitty malware-ish software, Windows can remain clean.
The latter might be a problem, though, as anyone can sometimes install some piece of shit that requires throughout cleaning later on. I just manually clean registry, but there are some good tools for the purpose.
I assume Unix-based systems would have something similar for the actually paid apps/apps with trials. Not that anyone would use them on Unix.

>I have used Windows since I was young.

>I feel I have an easier time with my Mac than my Windows PC.
Anon, that only says you have learning problems. If you've moved from Win to OSX and you found it to be "easier" almost immediately, means you weren't using any of the tools Windows has.

>the courtesy not to pretend
Windows is crystally clear about the amount of data it's sending. Read the manual.

>Of course they don't even list it under programs and features because it's a "system app". :^)
They do and it isn't.

It's not just that. It's the home of every modern pissing contest. Just spend an hour roaming /g/ to see how most of them go.
>>
>>60050709
I guess I can understand that. I never really put an OSX system under heavy stress, my Hackintosh install didn't see much productive work compared to my Linux/Windows installs.

And, to be fair, Win10 by default does do things like reinstall sponsored applications, Candy Crush included. It's easily disabled though, but past that you get into ethics discussions that I can do without.

This right here is my biggest fucking problem with them. They're so busy getting into every damn thing, treating me like I need my hand held. I can deal with the privacy invasion, I can deal with shit being hidden behind a curtain, but I won't put up with them telling me how my own computer should behave.

I'd sooner give up computers altogether than use Windows 10 as long as they wanna be like that.
>>
>>60050801
>reinstall sponsored applications
On Home - maybe. Never seen Pro install something on its own, and I've been using non-activated version for about a year, so I couldn't actually turn suggestions off. I had "that's an app from Store" in my Start menu, but that's it - never seen anything else.

When I bought PC and then actually activated Pro for it - suggestions were disabled by three clicks and I've never seen them again.

I do agree that the whole policy of putting any sort of ads/suggestions into your product stinks, but I never had problems with doing a bit of stuff to polish rough edges and get desired functionality.

When I had a gaming rig, I was using Radeon HD 9700, so I had to tweak driver settings for pretty much every game. But, well, it was one of the best GPU for the price, so I was fine with that.

What are you on about? I've used Linux for every task I performed on Windows. The only way you could come to such a conclusion is that you didn't have a clue when you tried it. It's not like CoD or Adobe programs are needed for our daily lives.
>>
>>60050897
My Win10 Enterprise install came with Candy Crush pre-installed, unfortunately. And a few others I can't remember. They got uninstalled and all of that was disabled, of course. It might have been because I installed from an insider Creator iso.

>>60050965
>I've used Linux for every task I performed on Windows.
Good for you.

>needed for our daily lives
Trying to limit scope? Just because *you* don't use it daily doesn't mean someone else doesn't, or that those tools don't exist.

Might as well mention decent office applications (and no, libre/openoffice are not viable alternatives).

All of you faggots need to fuck off, lurk more, and learn your operating systems.
>>
>>60051113
I'm afraid it's the other way around. The majority of people that use computers for work aren't graphic designers. Where Windows would cripple an older or less powerful system, Linux greatly increases its usefulness and it provides tons of productivity software at no cost.

It's not bad but lacks many things.

Worst font rendering of all OSes. It seems that to some extent it's their choice to have a crispy font rendering but it's actually choppy and jagged as fuck.

Very few options to customise the UI (this is even truer for macos).

File explorer and much of the core UI is the same old blocky grey stuff. Context menu too.

You can still have this, just make the start menu fullscreen.

That was one of the reasons I didn't install 10 for more than a year, until someone told me I could still have the fullscreen start menu on 10.
