Why don't you want to use PowerPC?
>>
>>60037165
no software
>>
>>60037165
I do - but on OS9. OSX is painfully slow on my MDD G4.
>>
>>60037200
What specs?
>>
>>60037183

>>60037200
unless you're one of those people who loses their shit over a second of loading time for something it has no excuse to be
>>
its garbage, i threw all mine out
>>
>>60037411
:(
>>
>>60037165
I do. My laptop's PowerPC, as is my bedside computer. My server is too but the PSU recently died and I haven't bothered replacing it.

>>60037165
unfortunately any modern POWER8 system cost is in the multiple tens of thousands.
>>
>>60039226
But you can get a used POWER7 system for under $2k
>>
>>60039297
Thats true. Do you have any experience runnig POWER7 system? would you trust getting one off ebay?
>>
>>60039357
Not yet but that's exactly where mine's going to come from
>>
>>60039377
What are you going to run on it? What OS? you going with AIX?
I wonder how fast one of these machines could compile gentoo.
>>
>>60039421
I'm going to try AIX but it's probably going to end up with FreeBSD
>>
>>60037165
Discord works on PPC? Or is that just a shortcut to the web client?
>>
>>60039436
Cool.

Get a 256, the model that has 256 cores.
>>
>>60039525
sorry meant model 775
>>
>>60039525
It all depends on how much I can save up before I get impatient and buy the best in my current price range
>>
>>60039555
You doing it just for hobby or you have any plans for using it in a business?
>>
>>60037165
Why does it matter? Can PPC run the software I need? The answer is probably "no".
>>
>>60039643
Just for a hobby

Up to 256 POWER7 CoD cores operating at 4.00 GHz
Up to 8.0 TB of DDR
I/O expansion capabilities of up to thirty-two 24-inch 12X I/O drawers, providing up to 640 PCIe slots and up to 832 disk/SSD bays
Up to 2,220 additional DASD bays using up to 185 EIA-2 19-inch disk drawers
who would want to have sex with it?
>>
>>60037165
I've got a Performa 6320, beige G3 and a G5.
>>
>>60039951
Shit with the core count I should've known it was going to be massive. If I'm going for big iron it's going to be an SGI machine or a z System mainframe.
>>
>>60040158
looks like the 710 through 730 models are 4U
>>
>>60040208
Yeah, 4U and under is what I was shooting for
>>
>>60039474
Yee its just a foxbox short cut
>>
>>60040158
Big-iron AIX boxes probably aren't that bad a choice if you want current utilities, plus they'll run Linux or BSD far better than non-Itanium SGI gear ever will if you decide to go with that route.

Wouldn't complain about a nice Origin 2K though.
>>60040208
>>60040221
750's a good choice too, quad-socket 4/6Uish with enough big-irony feel to keep you entertained.

I fixed an old imac g3 a few years ago. I actually didn't use apple around that time at all but grew up using os8 in school. Still had nostalgia because all the shareware and key commands are power user oriented. Even got on the internet with netscape and it was somewhat usable. at least enough to download software.

>Everyone needs at least one of these. It is the kind of system that seems to do everything, that is always up, that runs your application a
>It is the type of system that answers questions, like those found on Jeopardy.

>Six SFF SAS drive bays
>Six PCIe (8x) Gen2 slots
>Dual 10 Gb plus a choice of two additional 10 Gb
>I/O expansion Up to 4 PCIe 12X I/O drawers

>I/O expansion: SAS SFF bays for HDD/SSD
>Up to 1334 bays in storage drawers (max 56 drawers)
>Up to 72 bays in PCIe 12X I/O drawers

>I/O expansion: EXP30 Ultra SSD Drawers
>Up to 2 drawers (up to 960k IOPS read only)
>Up to 60 SSD (up to 23.2 TB capacity)

so, how much does one of these costs used?
>>
>>60040375
>tfw your htop will never show you 176 cores why even live
show /proc/cpuinfo
>>
>>60037165
I do use it for shitposting and programming but I wouldn't use a PPC machine as my everyday computer. You either have to use an outdated and insecure OS or install a GNU/Linux distribution and still not have very much software available.
>>
>>60040393
looks like 4-5 grand on average, 10-20 if you want a loaded one, plus AIX licensing
>>
>>60040375
i dream about playing with POWER and sun (now cuckracle) RISC
>>
>>60042788
shit's cheaper than ever now if all you want to do is fuck around, especially used SPARC hardware
>>
>tfw no single or dual socket SPARC or PPC workstations with modern specs anymore

life is suffering
>>
>>60037320
You gotta understand I use a MBP at work. The MDD is shockingly slow in comparison, and that's after I swapped out the spinning rust drive for a CF adapter.
