Athlon XP 2500+ running 98 SE. I actually got hold of a pretty nice purple coloured Palit Geforce 4 MX440 64MB (the 8x variant).

I also got a system for cheap - turned out to be a Socket 478-based Celeron 2.4GHz (Northwood) with 512MB RAM, a 40GB WDC harddrive,"LC-B350ATX" PSU that turned out to be decent (I can provide pictures if needed), an ABIT Siluro FX5200DT (wish I'd find more ABIT stuff), some generic soundcard and NIC (C-Media and "IC+") and a white Sony DVD-ROM.

Nice, i got one of them.
In one of the past retro threads we talked about its capability with some shit.
this one in particular:
https://rbt.asia/g/thread/59879916/
Yeah its crap, not gonna lie, why IBM marketed it as a mobile workstation i will never know, the IGP is absolutely trash, the only thing it has going for it is the desktop socket 478 processors.

And even with a 2.8ghz Pentium 4 the cooler is actually good enough to not be a housefire. It maxed at 65c or something under 100% cpu load after half an hour. Without even getting loud too, under 50c its passively cooled.

Basic?

>>60049093
Not really. I had a dead Athlon 1GHz and at first I thought it was the motherboard. I then tried to run the CPU with no heatsink (out of pure boredom) and found out it was dead. That and the underside had a darkened spot in the center, just where the core is situated. I found that out by swapping the CPU with hope that it will POST, and with a good CPU (Duron 1.3GHz) it POSTed successfully.

CRT monitors > everything else

I got this again and turned it on after more than 10 or 9 years, and looks way better than any laptop screen I've seen over the years, will use it to play old games like Diablo II or shit

Or so I thought because after maybe 20 or so minutes, the screen starts to like flicker only once and then it keeps doing every minute or so, I can't really explain it with words, is it really hard to try to fix these things? It won't kill you if you just use it, but the second the cover comes off you're playing with actually deadly shit. I once stuck my hand into the power supply of a running desktop computer when I was about 16 because I had the case open and I tripped over something in my room. The power supply had the top metal plate missing because I built the computer out of junk parts in 2001. It wasn't a fun experience.

I took apart a 400W Diablotek power supply back in 2015 that was really dusty and threw tiny sparks when I plugged the chord into the power supply so I could salvage the fan. I threw the rest out afterwards. I didn't even know it was dangerous until a year later.

now I see why I can't find dick on it, most good magazine sources are American, but it comes up literally nowhere anyway

it's definitely from around the date on the BIOS since it has a built-in mouse, and definitely a low-ender too with a 25 MHz Cx486SLC and 4MB of RAM, though that chip was old news by 1992. don't think it would have run GeoWorks since it's definitely not a GeoBook and I've seen no other mention of such a thing, just looks like a run of the mill low-end DOS/3.x laptop

wouldn't shit on it though, it's in great shape and I love cyrix 486SLC systems, their spec sheet shittiness is their redemption, since they're practically a spitting image of the entry-level of their time and elegantly simple in most implementations

Did some more digging through documentation today. I work for a medical company, turns out our pathologists used to call in on a voice line, record their findings, then a clinician would log in and transcribe the recorded sound file. No wonder it's loaded with RAM. It's basically a glorified voicemail best as I can tell. The three cards towards the back of the each have daughter cards with an additional 6MB per card, recording buffers best as I can tell.

Tell me about it, I would sell my left nut to be able to tell my late 90's self to hold onto all the ISA cards, Winchester/SCSI/PATA drives and 8" floppy drives I threw out when I moved out of home. "We Pentium nao, I don't need this shit". I still get shocked at the premiums this hardware is now going for nonetheless.

Anyway, just finished cleaning it out, have a guts shot. It powers up but reports a dead primary HDD. I'll throw it into one of my other oldenboxes and see if it's the drive or the interface.

While I'm here, I'll ask, there was once an anon who linked me to a page that holds a fuckload of jumper and manual information for ISA cards. I had a generic as fuck 386 memory expansion card, yet this site still listed it. I think the home page has a monochrome green on black motif, and it's style emulates a BBS homepage. And Ossy 1's are rare as rocking horse shit here in Australia. Meanwhile, I found that at a garage sale. Old bird selling it had no idea what it was and had $20 on it, I gave her $50 and ran before she could ask questions.

Meanwhile, those are membrane keyboards, if you're having trouble with it, it's going to be the matrix chip, the cable, or something on the mainboard. I have never in my 44 years of underwhelming existence seen a membrane keyboard fail for a non-electronic reason. Whats with the teardown?

That's a nice catch! It's such a comfy machine.
I've been working on the Ozzy 1 for a while now, first a bust power supply, then a busted DRAM, but I've managed to fix both already.

The mainboard and cable are fine (now), the keyboard is just a membrane matrix without any circuitry, the machine registers every single key if the right pins are closed on the cable, but the membrane itself is corroded between the two layers, which to make things worse are mostly glued together and have very thin traces and pads. The plan is to put switches where the pads are and rewire the matrix, retaining the original key mechanisms and everything else.

Shithouse. Have you tried running over them with some 0000 steel wool, or 1800+ grit sandpaper? To separate the membranes you may need a light touch with a heat gun (hairdryer might be better simply so you don't accidentally the whole membrane) Nothing to loose if you fuck it up, but it might just save you a bunch of unnecessary clusterfuckery if you can restore it.

Yeah, I already tried separating the layers and cleaning them, but even some corroded traces on it where disintegrated with a light touch of a cloth, so the clusterfuckery seems a better idea now then trying to fix the membrane itself.

>I was just thinking this thread needs more A E S T H E T I C. Got the matching CRT?
Nope, sadly nothing else then the box, it was a headless server. Didn't have a graphics card either, but I found one that will work in it for not much.

>>60065852
RS/6000 originally ran IBM AIX, a flavor of UNIX, well you can basically run anything that the hardware allows if you can compile it, but there are way better (as in software, community and documentation) non-x86 shitboxes to mess around with if you are just interested in non-x86 shit. From Apple II's to Commodore 64's and 68k/PPC Amigas and Macintoshes.

IRIX and Solaris are probably the best platforms to go for if you're just looking for one exotic box to play with, since they bring more to the table in end-user experience beyond a different instruction set buried under several layers of abstraction you'll never notice

RS/6es were generally just CAD/scentific boxes on the desktop and mission-crit database/etc boxes in the datacenter with a generally orthodox end-user experience as far as SysVs go, so unless you're mostly interested in development and alright/excited with busting out a compiler constantly I wouldn't seek one out particularly. they're still nice systems of course, what makes non-Wintel shit cool isn't so much the shitty CPU but the entire package and the historical context that surrounds them, that shit was fucking art.

I'm not telling him to buy one, doubt you could even find one anyway. A couple threads ago he mentioned it had some extra SCSI controllers and I figured it must have been attached to some nice matching enclosure that I just found while surfing brochures, it was just a cool thing, that's all.

>>60071681
It can serve other purposes, like stabilizing the system when vertically oriented or maintaining good airflow by keeping it separated from systems next to it in datacenter setups where multiple systems are placed side-by-side. It's also probably more a matter of saving desk space than just space in general if you choose to do it that way, having a disk cage with it wouldn't really inhibit that unless you've got a lot of them you're trying to cram on a shelf or something.

Yeah, the point is saving desk space and improving cooling in dense setups, not micromanaging all available space. If that was your priority, you bought 250s or just one big box and a bunch of X terminals to hang off of it.

a conroe chip is from 2006 mate, thats not really that old at all, nowhere near retro
still welcome in this thread but not really that old

and my g40 is definitely cool, but only from 2003, i dont consider it retro, speccy threads are for showing off for the lols, and a pentium 4 isnt that special
now a pentium 2 where i can get a speccy, that would be cool

no need to be a cunt
>>
>>60072166
my 380ED has a 30w power brick
the pentium MMX in it is only 13w

power inefficiency comes around the netburst era
theres a reason why old shit had 300w or lower power supplies
