ITT you're supposed to ask questions that do not deserve their own thread.

Read the sticky before posting, you can often find the answer faster there: >>51971506
Same goes for taking a minute or two and googling your issue first.
DO NOT BUMP YOUR QUESTION! You wont get an answer faster, and some people look for posts without replies.

Downloaded and installed Windows 10 LTSB from windows' site, it's supposed to be a 90 day evaluation version where after 90 days it just says install but you don't have to, you can just close out the prompt. The problem is it says I must activate my copy before I can customize anything, anyone know what I can do? I don't think I can get a real LTSB activation key from them because it's not meant for personal use.

I have questions regarding racks.

1) So let's see if I get this, an external 3.5" rack will allow me to turn my old regular hdd from my PC into an external hdd right? The rack doesn't require a special hdd or any other stuff?

2) Why the hell do internal racks exist? I can just mount my hdd in the case.

3) Why the fuck are 3.5" racks twice more expensive than 2.5" racks? The components are identical, a SATA-USB and another USB for power.

4) Why the hell do 2.5" racks even exist? 2.5" hdd are very rare as separate components. Do laptop owners repurpose their 2.5" hdds that often?

5) How does a singular external rack cool the hdd?

if you need to add text one by one use appendtext on your textbox, otherwise use a stringbuilder and set the text once it's complete.
no need to redraw the window for every line then.
see msdn for appendtext or stringbuilder.
to make a new line use environment.newline manually or the appendline method on the stringbuilder

Is there a way to repackage, a program that's already installed to installable format?
>>
>>60030483
on windows?
depends on the program. most programs today install by just decompressing the application files and put a shortcut into your start menu.
some more complex ones install their services that need to run.
and some old shitty ones pollute the registry with nonsense.

>>

Yes, on windows.

I know if it's just decompressing, then simply copying the files will do.

>>
>>60030566
It might work. I'd try two or three different programs. And if it's really fucking important maybe do a macrium image of your system drive in case you end up having to go back. Your safest bet would be to keep looking for the driver installer. If you go to device manager, click on it's properties, details tab, what does it say under "compatible id's"

they only do GET requests, not POST.
Buttons and other form stuff are generally submitted using POST, not GET.
Besides, how would they enter payment/shipping options? They don't fill out forms.

It might be possible for an online shop to purely work on GET requests, but I have high doubts anyone would do that to themselves, a lot more effort for no gains at all.

Anyone else use dropbox and have it consistently seize up after about a day or so of uptime? I only notice it when windows explorer starts refusing to show file icons/thumbnails, and the only fix is to terminate both processes and restart it. It's been doing this shit for months and I'm sick of it.

And now I've had a situation where dropbox went and deleted shit I put into it during a time when I neglected to start it back up again (instead of simply "catching up" and syncing the stuff I added). Now I can't trust it and I refuse to fucking babysit it anymore. If I can't fix this then fuck dropbox.

Failing that, what's a good alternative to dropbox?

>>
>>60030871
Well the more non-standard something is, the less likely that the driver programs will pick it up. If you also need some kind of application ( i.e. >>60030483 ), then you're almost certainly boned. This is not a thing that windows does well. Your best bet is to take whatever info you can and scour the internet. If you do find something that MIGHT work, then like I said, you can do a full partition backup, and if it's a no-go, revert back easily.

Can someone explain why I can cross-origin request by proxying through YQL (Yahoo Query Language using their servers for things like a website's RSS feed, yet I violate CORS when doing it myself? What about using YQL makes it so that Yahoo isn't violating CORS? >89 vs 0
if we are using that metric there's usually some 2k leechers on this particular torrent at any given time.
>>
>>60031278
because their server side language doesn't care about cross origin, where your browser does.
in their header they tell your browser that they allow you fetching stuff from them and will then fetch it on their server side from the original server ignoring the headers.

easiest way to replicate is to set up a proxy in your server and map a directory to a different server.
how depends on the server. see proxy_pass for nginx.

>>
>>60032318
Looks like a pentium 4 (single core, early 2000s). You could probably run windows 7 on it, but I'd stick to Lubuntu or peppermint. You should be able to use an SSD, and it will perform better than a hard drive, but it won't use the SSD's full speed. Looks like the expansion slot of choice was AGP, so the best graphics card you would be able to put in there was probably made 7-10 years ago. If you just have random ram lying around there is almost zero chance it will fit.

This is not the way to do it. Put the drive you want in the laptop you want, then do your clean install. Copy files at leisure. Done.

so you took that hard drive and put in another computer and reinstalled windows on that?
your boot manager is on the other computer's drive. you should only have the HDD you're installing on connected when you do this.
go into BIOS and see if it even detects the drive then reinstall windows again with just that drive.

also, put the fucking drive in the PC you will use it on. it's a bad idea to install on another PC and then move the hard drive because windows detects the hardware and installs drivers for that and can go nuts when you put it in a new system

I'd say a 1070 as something affordable. At 4k in both of those games that'd be your best bet and a simple google says the same basically.

1080 if you have the money.

I don't even know why you'd want 4k in OW to be honest, but I can understand the eye-candy for Skyrim.

Overwatch is pretty busy visually either way so most players tone it down and make it more performance friendly. I'd say 1080p or 1440p with a high refresh rate monitor is better for games like OW.

A 580 should be able do 4k overwatch pretty well. I'd guess you can get 4k skyrim if you're flexible with the settings. If that's all the games you need 4k for, it would be hard to justify going up to the next price tier.

PCIe came into existence in 2004, so it's POSSIBLE, but even if you could get the 750 into it, it probably wouldn't work all that well. Plus the PSU probably wouldn't have the right connectors. And if you spend practically anything on this, you basically waste money that would go a lot farther toward buying another rig on ebay, unless you're just in it to have fun with legacy hardware, and you can usually do that a lot cheaper on craigslist etc.

Even if he could find a mobo that supports PCIe (clearly a waste of $$), getting a PCIe 3 card to work over a 1.1 slot has a solid chance of not working, and the bandwidth limitations would be less than ideal. Plus we're still talking about strapping a 750 to a processor from around 2001.
>>

Technically they're supposed to be, but manufactures aren't super concerned with making sure their tech fits with decade old hardware. It's really up to them how dependent they make their card on the power saving features etc implemented in newer versions of the spec. AMD said fuck it fairly early on, although there's a chance low end Nvida would work. Either way it sounds this guy was trying to get the best bang for his buck, and didn't realize he was even buying a 15 year old kit. So the practical answer is probably throw it all in a bin and buy something that won't cost 3x it's own price in electricity every year.
>>

Kek. Read your own article

"While it is true that PCI SIG while developing PCI express slots made sure that they remain compatible with each other, it is the GRAPHIC CARD manufactures (i.e Nvidia & AMD) and the sub vendors (Saffire, Zotac, EVGA etc) that really make the difference!
We all know that the AMD Radeon HD 7000 series is extremely power efficient. Having said that it comes at a cost. This power efficiency comes due to the new electrical interface featured in PCIe v3.0 and 2.0 slots and is ABSENT in PCIe v1.1 slots. Hence they are NOT COMPATIBLE."

>UPDATE: (After reading the comments I went back to researching again over this question and I must partly decline my statement of the PCIe configuration not being backward compatible. They in fact are very much compatible after a motherboard update (In some cases even the update wasn't needed. Sorry for the misguided information but I tried my best of reaching to the root of this controversy and reached a partially mistaken conclusion. So once again guys, if your graphic card doesn't work on your old motherboard then an UPDATE from from motherboard manufacturer will most likely solve your problem. My sincere apologies for any inconvenience or confusion caused. Thank you for all sharing your helpful experiences, as my final aim was to help ease the confusion and frustration that is involved with building a PC for the 1st time. Cheers to PC gaming!)
>>
>>60033423
Claiming that every manufacturer is going to release an update for their mobo is really stretching it. They barely even do that today. A pentium 4 era company could have easily gone out of buisness or just decided not to give a fuck. I stand by my original statement, that there's a decent chance the board wouldn't work. It's exactly the sort of misunderstanding that led the author to be wrong in the first place. Thanks for the pic though.

Ubuntu is Debian, just with usability shit slapped on top. You can make them virtually identical as far as battery life goes.

Use as few graphical elements as possible. That way you can keep your screen brightness low (plain text has less detail and better contrast) and not tax your CPU. These together will prolong your battery life significantly. Also turn off WiFi and Bluetooth whenever possible.

Programming newb here. Java question...

How would I do something like this?

Say I have:

List<String> list = new ArrayList<String>();

list.add("John");
list.add("Sally");
list.add("Bob");

and I want to create a hashmap that loops through list and add all the strings in list followed by the number 1.

Second part.

How would I look through the hashmap and look for "Bob" and if "Bob" appears add a plus 1 to his value?

This is a made up problem on my part so it doesn't really make sene other than I'm trying to understand how to use hashmaps in java.

I've got a Linux box w/ a network facing NIC that has an IPv6 /48 allocation routed to it.

What I want to do is announce separate /64 prefixes to a number of bridges and have any virtual guets on those bridges do SLAAC to get a publicly routed IPv6 address.

So there's basically a trunk bridge tied a number of sub-bridges (ms paint related.) In this example br1 and br2 should have separate /64 allocations. However if I have radvd announce on `br2` for e.g, the announcement propagates to `br1` and `br0` since they're just switches.

How do I keep radvd traffic local to a bridge, while still allowing the guests to talk to devices on other bridges / beyond the edge router? I think what I want is VLANs possibly?

Hello /g/'s
I have a question of questionable intelligence about VPNs and their privacy policies.

A rule of thumb about VPNs is: because you can't know if VPN is logging, always assume they do, despite what they say.

BUT:
>VPN Provider’s No-Logging Claims Tested in FBI Case

https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-providers-no-logging-claims-tested-in-fbi-case-160312/

Does that mean that PIA can be trusted?

I just recently found out, that EU requires it's members ISPs to keep logs and my nation has laws which allows to some institutions request ISP to monitor any user activity on the internet.

Which sucks, because I use torrents.
Fuck... even if I leave mean comment under some article in native news website, they can turn off my internet for couple of days. I can even get fined if they'll think my comment was harmful. (don't really care about these, but it's ridiculous)

So, this FBI case means that PIA is trustworthy?

Is there any reason to use Tor at all? I remember there being some sort of security thing a whole while ago, so I never actually used it. But now I've got a week off and I'm looking for stuff to do. Is there still interesting stuff to do with/on Tor, or should I just stay away from it?

Darknet, I guess. Tor allows access to onion sites.

So, I opened the ram/hdd part of my laptop and found this.
Has 4GB ram. How do I put it a another ram, if possible?
laptop is acer aspire e1-531
>>
>>60037953
Depends on if you're under surveillance right now.

I'm serious. The problem with the darknet is that it's way too easy to stumble on actual, honest-to-god CP. If you're not being monitored, you just hit back and delete your history+cache. If you are being monitored, you get /fucko/'d.
>>
>>60038005
Buy another 4GB RAM stick, put it inside, done.
>>
>>60038007
>The problem with the darknet is that it's way too easy to stumble on actual, honest-to-god CP.

Well, that's not good. I mean, I don't think I'm under surveillance. Don't see a reason why I would be. But maybe it's better not to take any chances.
>>
>>60038005
So anon, when did you find out you have Down's Syndrome?
>>
>>60037383
they're mostly bullshit. the big schools have free online shit on most things that you can learn from and then you can take the real test at a legit place and get cert'd. more likely to be taken seriously by employers if it's not from some no-name online school.

>>60037618
call your operator and ask if your phone is locked or not (most likely is).

>>60037953
there's not really a reason to go there unless you're looking for CP or drugs.

>>60038005
flip the green shit up, insert stick into slot so it's like the red, flip it back down. check with the brand/manufacturer's website to make sure you buy compatible ram.

Don't do it.

I'm currently troubleshooting my third reinstall of W10 atm after yet another round of W10 forced updates corrupts your user account or fucks your OS to the point it black screens on boot and not even safe mode loads and literally none of it's recovery tools do anything so lol format time. My favourite aspect of W10 is you can't even backup game installs purchased off the Store due to encryption. Always a fucking blast having to redownload 100's of GB's for no good reason on a shit connection.

Meanwhile I can reinstall W7 in 30mins, no downloads required during the OS install, copy all my games back on and you're good to go within the hour.....W10 however literally takes overnight to install then days to redownload whatever.

>Also what's the best argument to use linux over windows? Is it anything to do regarding the actual quality of the software or does it mainly have to do with the privacy argument?
1) It's free.
2) The privacy argument.
3) Compulsory open source deployment for user-created software ensures that projects that began separately will be able to grow together as demand arises for their interoperability, allowing for a more global cross-app consistency of experience than proprietary programs, and programs for proprietary platforms, are legally / financially able to offer. "It just works," as they say -- in this case because usually someone noticed it WASN'T "just working," decided to fix it out of self-interest, and was authorized to do so free of charge under the GPL.
3) Linux software generally operates at a lower level of abstraction, which makes good software more efficient and bad software unsafe to use. The latter is generally of little concern to Linux users, because minimalist recovery disks can be prepared in a streamlined manner that costs nothing, presents no legal issues, and involves only files that are painless to find and download on account of the absence of any copyright claims in their regard.
4) Malfunctioning or misused software actually provides useful error messages instead of user-friendly but excessively generic "encountered a problem and needs to close" bullshit. If anything doesn't "just work," it gives you enough information to trivially MAKE it work, as long as you have Google.
5) The compiler is lightweight, comes with the system, conforms to the C standard, and imposes no restrictions (such as royalties) on how you're allowed to use its output.
6) If you don't like the UI, you can just replace it. In fact, you don't have to use it at all.
7) The command line is more versatile. You can even install new software with it in just four words, without ever having to touch an Internet browser.

I tried automatic repair, did nothing, I tried using chkdsk, also did nothing. Even tried both refreshing and resetting to no avail, returns some basic "couldn't reset" error. Anyone know anything about this?

Right now I have a seagate and adata external hard drive for backup and I have to make do with one of them.
I have heard seagate has one of the worst failure rates for hdd and adata seems to be chink shit tier. Both seem like bad options but like I said, for now that's the only thing I have. Which one is less likely to fail? I want the hard drive for backup and occasionally retrieve some files from it, if that helps.

Also I tested writing and reading from them and the adata hard drive's light blinked red sometimes during transference when it originally is blue. The seagate one didn't had that problem. Right now I'm inclining for the seagate drive.

My entire experience with W10 has been an endless trainwreck.

It practically ruined our studio overnight as we have to leave machines running to upload huge files or batch render shots (tv/film) but W10 will happily install updates and restart whenever the fuck it wants. Try disabling it through regedit, renables itself. Ended up scheduling a script to run at startup just to nuke it's bullshit every day but even that wasn't 100%

We were back on W7 within the week.

I'm trying to run a cracked simulation program for windows using wine/debian.
Every time I run Program.exe, I get an error message saying "Program_gui.exe not found!" even though Program_gui.exe is in the same folder. I even tried copying Program_gui.exe into several folders the program could be looking through. I've also tried simply running Program_gui.exe, which opens the gui but claims product key authentication failed.

If one program searches for another program (which definitely exists), does that mean the path variable for wine/linux is flawed, or is Program.exe hard-coded to only search through a specific windows pathway? What could I do to fix this?
