I want to try switchong to Arch Linux but I still need windows for my non Linux supported apps. The creator's update is absolutely shit. Is it easy to set up usb passthrough so I can allow a VM Windows to use my graphics card while running Linux as my primary OS?
>>
>>60018534
I meant PCI passthrough oops

but windows 8 is a meme
and windows 10 has telemetry

8.1 + classic shell is comfy as fuck and faster than 7
10 is faster than 8 on most new hardware

and even then, I use 10 non-ironically simply because I like it
>>
>>60018534
It's not too hard, you just need to have two graphics cards (you can use the igpu in your CPU as the second).

>>
>>60018305
No there isn't.
/g/ folks will hype every rumor about windows being spyware

For example that win10 makes screenshots of shit you do.
Actually that's only true if you have insider preview installed. Because it's technically beta they make screenshots of third party programm installation processes

/g/ on the other hand says that this is true for actual win10 versions
>>
>>60018534
It's possible, but it's easier to just dual-boot desu. If you already have Windows installed then most of the work is already done. Now just resize the partition to make room for Arch, install it, and install a boot-loader to recognize Arch and Windows. Good luck
>>
No, there's nothing wrong with using Windows for the average person. Power users and developers on the other hand need a more reliable toolkit. Powershell is only good for some things, not the more advanced stuff, and the Ubuntu subsystem in W10 is too gimped to be practical.
>>
>There is nothing wrong with using Windows 7

Windows being proprietary botnet shit is hardly its biggest issue, there's also the matter of it being a poorly written technical nightmare.

Fun fact: Someone I know worked for a company that had a hardware debugger during the Windows 98 days. Some of the engineers loaded Windows 98 onto it and watched it boot. Know what they found out? Windows 98 triggered FOUR critical exceptions during boot and just ignored all of them. Classic Microsoft
>>
>>60018305

Yeah, but truthfully once you get use to linux and find a setup that works for you, you will never ever want to switch back to windows. Well that's the case with me.

I had to re-install Arch recently as I was moving to a newer SSD, and the process was so easy, just took snapshots using rsync of my home and root, did a clean re-install, ethernet worked OOTB so I could then hook into the repo re-install all the software I had and then dump all the configs from my home drive into my new home and the state of everything would be restored, only took a morning to get my system back to how it had been the day before with litreally the same song pasued on my music player when I opened it again.

When I had to do the windows install for the dualboot, it was incredibly frustrating as nothing worked OOTB, I had to use another pc to go and get the ethernet drivers, then after that I had to go and re-find all the software for the system which takes ages on google rather than via a repo.

tl;dr windows is shit
>>
>>60020560
Windows may be poorly written but at least it works OOTB for most machines

Never had that experience with linux, sadly
>>

Windows almost never works out of the box.
>>
>>60020434

what the fuck no
>>
>>60020609
That's largely because Windows has commercial support and companies write Windows drivers for their hardware. There are definitely usability issues with most Linux distros but the device support nightmare is a market problem

Well since Win8 it does because you can get everything needed from windows update
well as long as you got your networking driver running

>>60020699
So sad. I really like linux but It's always a hassle.
Currently I'm running windows on my desktop.
But once every month a install a linux distro on a spare ssd just to check if driver support is better now.
Speaking of GTX 1080 related drivers.
They are still shit

Yes there is. There's so much wrong with it the English language basically invented a new term to describe how bad it is.

It's by a wide margin one of the worst pieces of software ever created.

Don't you have an SSD in your 'gaming rig'?

Rebooting should take about 6 seconds or so.
>>
>>60021539
>not running a xeon server and suffering trough two minutes of boot time because of RAM checks every bootup
>>
>>60021539
The time isn't the problem. This argument is nothing-to-hide tier. Torrents and anything else running will stop when you do it. It's like turning off one computer to do ANYTHING on the other one. Not even slightly worth it.
>>
>>60020434
If I don't have an iGpu should I get something like a 1050ti for Linux?
I want to use my powerful card for Windows cause of gaymen
>>
>>60021563

Who the fuck downloads torrents while gaming?

Duel booting is quite simply trhe best method of using a PC.

90% of your time is spent in GNU/Linux. If you want to play a video game then 7 seconds later you will be.

>There is literally nothing wrong with using Windows.

Nothing wrong with using MacOS or Linux, either.

Windows is a tool, and it keeps me paid well enough. Usage wise, it's not as comfy as Solaris on an Ultra60, or Irix on an Origin, but it'll do. For now...

Microsoft is trying to ramp up its cloud based revenue while it can, because it knows its aout to lose massive share in desktop market in 2020.

January 14th 2020 is the last day I will be able to use a Microsoft OS that is in any way installed on a device with network connectivity.
>>
What's the best version of 10 to use if I want the least bloat out of the box? Is it still Enterprise?
>>
>>60020851
What's the term?
>>
>>60022081
You want the LTSB.

Why you want it, no-one knows.

It offers nothing that 7 doesn't, and reduces your security.
>>
>>60021032
The best option would be Linux with a windows VM if you like gaymen.
>>
>>60022203
I would install 7 but the laptop I want to put it on only has drivers for 8 and above. If I'm only using it for browsing and emulating old games is there a better OS to use?
>>
>>60022330
>only has drivers for 8 and above

Any laptop built in the past 7 years or so will run windows 7, 8 or 10.

The fact that that the laptop manufacturers supped putting out shitty fucked up drivers years ago makes no difference. Just install 7, let it update, install the generic drivers from nvidia or whatever and you're done.
>>
>>60022398
Let me rephrase that, it has no drivers for wifi and unless there is some free and open source solution to give this shitty Sony Vaio wifi drivers for 7 I am stuck with using 10.
